My first child is due on New Year's.

As a boy, he'd be named "Gabriel Logan".

As a girl, she'd be named either "Alexandria Rose" or "Magdelene Rose".

Of course, it's a girl, since we weren't sure on a girl's name yet.

So... what's everyone's input? Which would be better?

For reference, I've been keeping a journal about her coming into the world, which can be viewed at  [livejournal.com profile] womb_leech

Hello, there! I saw this community on Spotlight and immediately joined, because names are awesome.

drawn to this community by the spotlight. Big suprise.

Seriously though, I love names. I love them in all sorts of combinations and languages. I've always loved names, and I probably always will.

Just to prove how much of a nerd I am, I'm planning on naming a future daughter Lúthien Sakura. Internet cookies to anyone who gets what the first name is referencing (the middle name is kind of obvious).

Hello! I've browsed this community before, but decided to join after I saw it in the spotlight this morning. I'm a boring old Jennifer, and my husband is the male boring name equivalent of Michael Peter, haha, so when we had our son in July, we wanted to give him an interesting name, but not a crazy weird one that could be made fun of too easily. We're both Pete's all Irish, and I'm half-Irish, so we were sticking to those sorts of names. Anyway, If it was a girl, she would have been Fiona, but it ended up being a boy, so we went with Finn McCool Young. We based the name on the Irish folk hero -- I know the original spelling is Fionn mac Cumhaill, but the pronunciation is Finn McCool, so we went with the easier spelling, for his sake, hahaha! Anyway, I guess my question is, what do you think? Weird? I know Finn is becoming pretty common, with the whole Glee thing, but I thought McCool was a different and kind of neat middle name. Obviously I'm not going to change his name or anything, I'm just wondering about your opinions.

Also, just so this isn't only about my son, here are some other names of some children of friends of mine, what do you think of these?
Kai
Baine
Bastien

And behind the cut are a couple of pictures of my little Finn.

I just saw this community in the spotlight and have been reading and enjoying for the past hour.  I love names!!   (And, my new favorite nickname for my dog, from a long-ago entry on here, is Hatie-Jane... mwa ha ha)  I work in pediatrics, and wanted to share a few of the most "memorable" names I've seen the past several years @ work.  (Along with all the "-ayden"s and "Neveah"s.)

Just off the top of my head-

Messiah
Espn (boy, pronounced Eh-spin- I know it sounds like an urban legend, but I did actually meet the kid)
Cindrella (no, not a typo)

anyway, just wanted to say hi- I foresee many hours of enjoyment in this community.  :-)

I am so stoked that this community was in the spotlight! I love people's names! Part of my job involves filing and I absolutely adore it because it gives me the opportunity to creep on a whole bunch of different names.

My family is Newfoundland English, and here's my close family's names:

I don't have a huge list of names that I love, although I'm sure I could come up with one if I sat down and gave it some thought.

My son was born on September 22 of this year and I am in love with his name. After a lot of talking and arguing and debating and brainstorming, his father and I finally decided on the awesome final product!

Azrael Xavier Ezekiel Longstreet

We like it for a number of reasons. Azrael is and Xavier are angels and Ezekiel is a prophet. His initials spell Axel, which offers a simple nickname and he has choices if he decides he doesn't really want to be called Azrael.

If at any point in the future we have a girl, I'd like to name her Chloe Elizabeth.

:D

A post down there made me think of this.

Victoria, spelled WIKTORIA on mty bff's 4 year old niece. It's a Polish thing, I guess, but WDYT?

Like everyone else I saw this community featured on spotlight and wanted to join because I love seeing new and interesting names. The names in my family are: Gale "Roxy" Roxanna, Dirk Steven, Andrea Noelle, and Brandon Scott. My brother Brandon and his wife Shannon Renee had a baby and they named him Derrick Vincent, Derrick being similar to my Dad's Dirk and Vincent after my Grandpa. Also, my Grandma is one of 13 and some of their names or nicknames are different so I thought I could share: Mary "Mas" Margaret, Joseph "John" Roussan, Charles "Chas" Glennon, Alice "Bern" Bernadette, Thaddeus "Ted" Joseph, Catherine "Cat" Marie, Charlene "Chow" Ann, Paschal "Pap" Jude, Elizabeth "Betty" Jane, Donna "Don" Geralyn, Janice "Jan" Agatha, James "Jim Ed" Edward, Judith "Judy" Mary.

NAMES. I love them and thinking about them and looking at them and...Yes.

So hey. I'm Carmen (my middle name is my mom's maiden name). My brothers are Matthew Henrik and Steven James, parents Kristy (whose middle name was once Nora but is now her maiden name) and Jim (James) John.

The famjam names because there are a lot )

Wow, that was a really long diatribe. Anyway!

Some names I love:
For boys:
Christopher
Michael (not Mike, maybe Mikey, but I love the full name)
Oliver (and ALL its derivatives)

For girls:
Tyler
Sawyer
Mila

Also...I knew a girl in high school whose name was Mia. Her sister's name was Tia. How do you feel about that one?

Nicknames

Yes, I am also a newb who saw the spotlight! But I'm not here to talk about that; I'm here because I like names!

A friend of mine once told me that her parents gave both her and her brother names that could not be shortened so they would not have any nicknames. Personally, I like nicknames, and thought that that was a bit over the top.

That said, I want to ask for your opinions: What do you think about nicknames?
[identity profile] avec-bonheur.livejournal.com
There seems to be no general opinion on "trendy" names: you either abhor them or adore them.

What trendy name(s) make you want to roll your eyes and set fire to things? Why don't you like them?

If you love them, why do you prefer different spellings (Aluhsun over Alison?) over their traditional counterparts?

Hey!

I'm one of the new people who saw this community on the spotlight and had to join, ha ha. :)

I love names. I've been writing stories since I was a little girl, and character names have always been important to me. I'm also now a mother, so I have another reason to care about names.

First of all, my name is Rebecca. I was named after my several-times-great paternal grandmother. My husband's name is Alexander. As far as I know, he wasn't named after anybody.

The names we had originally picked out for our child were Mary Vivian (after my paternal grandmother) and Walter Charles (Walter is the English version of his dad's middle name, Charles is my dad's middle name). However, I didn't really like Walter as a first name, and when my mother-in-law said we shouldn't use Walter because of the children's book series "Walter the Farting Dog", I took that as a good opportunity to suggest other names. I originally suggested William Alexander (that was the name of my mom's brother who died at two days old) but my husband said he wanted to have one of the grandfather's names in it, so we settled on Charles Alexander. Charles is after my dad, and Alexander is after my husband.

Our son was born on March 18, 2011. His name is Charles Alexander and his nickname is Charlie.

We're not sure we're going to have another child at this point. However, if we do, and if it's a girl, I think we're going to go with Elizabeth Maria (Elizabeth is my older sister's middle name, Maria is the name of one of my husband's aunts). If it's a boy, I'm thinking Edward Walter or Edward John (Edward is just a name we like, Walter would be after my husband's dad, as mentioned before and John is my husband's older brother's name).

We're definitely fans of the old-fashioned, traditional names for children. We think names like Hayden, Jayden, Braeden Madison, Carter, and Kai are all way overused these days. We don't criticize people who use them; it's not our choice and not our place to criticize, but we'd like to see a resurgence of the old-fashioned, traditional names, with the regular spellings.

Of course, our son is going to be the only Charles in his class, and maybe that's a good thing.

So, let's start a discussion: What are your favorite traditional names?
[identity profile] aunabjo.livejournal.com
I decided to join this community to get some opinions on a couple of names. My fiance and I are expecting our first baby, a boy, in March. We can't decide between the first name for him. We are choosing between the following:
 Sawyer Allen Holleran
Rowan Allen Holleran
[identity profile] briteflame3.livejournal.com
Hey Everyone, I am not a newbie just one who is a slacker until I saw all the new posts going up.

So this is just opinions and being silly not serious...
My children's names are Mason and Madeline. I did not intentionally name them both with a M name, it just happened to be the names we liked. If I have a (hypothetical) third child, will this child be crushed if I left them out of the M names? To add to it, my husbands name is Matthew so three M names and mine beginning with T.

If so, what M names for boys and girls do you love?
Should I do a T name?
Should I not care and just name this (hypothetical) child whatever name we come to love?

For reference I love the name Max, not sure what "full" name I'd give but it does fit in the M names :)

So I realize that I have really no room to talk, seeing as I do not have any children (yet), but one of my biggest pet peeves is sibling names that simply don't sound like a "set". Now I'm not talking about numbering your kids or naming them after colors, don't get me wrong.

I think my family does an "okay" job at sibling sets. For instance, Ashley, Joshua, and April are myself and my siblings. Edgar, James, Terry, and Patricia are my mother's siblings.

What do you folks think? Do you think that names should sound "similar" between siblings? Can you name one child Jack and the other Gunnerkrigg and not seem foolish?

Yet another new member! Sorry guys, this'll be getting old quickly :p

My name is Louisa and I've always loved finding out name meanings and origins. I do a bit of fic writing so I'm always looking for new names.

Recently I welcomed two new arrivals to my family. My uncles fiancee gave birth a couple of weeks ago to Olly James and this morning my best friends little brother's daughter arrived. She's called Mia Isabelle. Funny that they've both got what could be seen as nicknames for first names :) I'm a fan of longer 'sunday' names myself purely because I love nicknames so something that can be shortened is awesome :D

In terms of names that I would name any babies I'd ever have, the list is soo long! I feel sorry for any kids I might have because they'll be most likely named after Greek gods or fictional characters. I do like a few more 'normal' names. James, Nathan and Elizabeth to be exact. I really like 'boys' names for girls like Dylan and Aiden to name but a couple.

Quick question for discussion! Do any of you have names that people often confuse the pronunciation of? Does it offend you if people get it wrong? I get called Louise a lot but I think thats people just not paying attention. Occasionally I get Loo-eesss-ah when I've always said my name with more of a z sound. It's more the spelling people tend to struggle with :p
[identity profile] blacmeissa.livejournal.com
Hello ! Nice to meet you all !
So the spotlight brought me to this stage lol.
I'm childfree so no naming kids for me :(.. but I intend to be a comic artist / animator so I have liking for
creating stories and characters to go with them ( that's where my obsession with names come from ).

As for me personally I want to change my entire name when I'm older especially my last name ( because it's long ). Names I have thought of naming myself were Jessica , Amylynne , Christina , Rubina , Yeva , Nasri , Samire , Liliya .
I love the nameJessica no matter how common it seems xD. This is silly but you know how some restaurants at first they ask your name and when your order is ready they call what you order and your name well....I use Jessica a lot .

So I just have a question :

1.)  Do you think names should be limited to a nationality or a culture or should ppl be free to name their kids / themselves whatever they please ? ( ex. My friends who are a Caucasian couple named their baby girl Miyavi ( which is a Japanese name ) and their parents & co workers said it was stupid to name a white child with an Asian name. Now I am Asian and I have a western name yet no one has ever said anything bad ). Now probably the grandparents said that cause the child may get bullied , commented on for having a strange name but I kinda notice this attitude in general towards Asian , African and some Eastern European names so it made me wonder .

I'm not meaning to pick on any one race or seem discriminatory so I appologize in advance if I come off as that :(
I'm just genuinely curious.

G'day!

Hi there! My name is Candice and I'm yet another person who has discovered this place via the Spotlight.

Anyway, I am the second youngest of 7 children and my 5 elder siblings have 18 children between them I've got a whole lotta names that I'd like to share with you all :D

Here we go! )

Another newbie here, saw this comm featured on the front page. I love learning about the meanings of names and looking up names for people I know.

My family are as follows:

Mum - Angela (Parents Arthur and Alma. Siblings June, Linda, Rosemary and Alan.)
Dad - Derrick Edward Karl Heinz (Parents Edward and Hannelore. Sibling Rosemary)

Me - Heidi Louise
Sister - Maria Annette

Cousins - Darren, Lisa, Paul
                Ashley (male) and Kayleigh
                Lawrence and Georgina

When I have children, I currently like - Girl - either Evelyn or Robyn as a first name, with Hermione Hannelore as middle names.
Boy - Benjamin Edward, then either David or Samuel as a second middle name.

*waves hello*
I'm so glad to have found this community. I'm a long time name enthusiast (as a kid it took me months to decide on dolls' names) and I enjoy reading blogs on the babynamewizard and a few other sites. For some reason, I never thought to seek out other enthusiasts on LJ.

I have two sons, Grady and August (who we call Gus.) We're done having kids, and while it's a decision I'm happy with, it makes me sort of sad that I will never get to name a girl. For the record, I liked Lydia for a girl, my husband liked Audrey. To make matters worse, we have a girl dog, but since we got her prior to kids, we gave her a boy name (Willie). If only I had known....

Off to peruse the community!

Hiya!

Saw this comm on the spotlight and I had to join (yes I'm another spotlight recruit)! I love names and name etymology. No babies yet to give names to, but I'm certainly having fun coming up with a list of names for my future babies!

Anyway, I'm Melissa, and you can click to read more about me and my family names! )

Finally, question for the comm: what do you think of spelling names in ways that vary from the norm? Like I mentioned in the cut my boyfriend likes "Madylinn" over "Madeline," and last week a saw a girl named "M'hagnee" as opposed to "Mahogany." Opinions? Edit: Sorry, just noticed practically the same question got asked here!
[identity profile] opalgirl28.livejournal.com
So, are you sick of us yet? :P

I'm 22, female, hailing from Atlantic Canada. No kids and none on the way, but I'm a writer and I love naming (and seeing the patterns that occur).

Would you like a list of some of the names in my family? I think you would. Our ancestry's a bit of a European mish-mash, mostly Scots and English, with Acadian on my father's side.

Fair warning: my family is *huge* )

[identity profile] downshefalls.livejournal.com
You have no idea how excited I was to spot this on the spotlight. I don't have any children of my own, nor do I plan on having them in the near future. However, I have always been obsessed with names and where they come from - I currently have about 20 name books in my collection.

I suppose I'll follow the trend and post a few family names.

Onto the names! )
