Nov. 7th, 2011 01:50 pmI am so stoked that this community was in the spotlight! I love people's names! Part of my job involves filing and I absolutely adore it because it gives me the opportunity to creep on a whole bunch of different names.
My family is Newfoundland English, and here's my close family's names:
Mum's sister: Jessie-Ann (b. 1968)
My mum's two grandmothers were named "Jessie" and "Annie" so my grandparents decided to name my aunt after them both. She has no middle name.
Mum's brother: Colin Earl (b. 1974)
I'm not sure where my grandparents got "Colin" from; I think that it was just a name that she liked. "Earl" is after my grandfather.
Mum: Jan Edwina (b. 1971)
Mum was supposed to be named "Janis" but my great-grandfather couldn't pronounce it and kept calling her "Janet". My grandparents just decided to name her "Jan" to clear up any confusion. "Edwina" is the middle name of one my grandmother's sisters.
Dad: Gary Patrick Joseph (b. 1968)
Dad's family is Irish Catholic. "Gary" was just a name that they liked; "Patrick" was chosen because he was born near St. Patrick's Day; "Joseph" was his confirmation name.
Me: Janelle Marie Noëlle (b. 1992)
My name was chosen after my mum's; "Marie" is after my mum's aunt, and "Noëlle" was chosen because my birthday is in December, the same month as Christmas.
My brother: Zachary Andrew Colin (b. 1996)
"Zachary" was just a name that my mum liked; "Andrew" is after my great-grandmother and by association my Aunt Jessie-Ann; and "Colin" is after my uncle.
I don't know my cousin's middle names, but here are their first:
Paternal Cousins
Shauna
Steven
Stacey
Ryan
Robyn
Tyler
Chelsey
Matthew
Nicholas
Alexander
Maternal Cousins
Jordan
Dylan
Haley
Tatiana (step-cousin)
Carina (step-cousin)
And that's it!

Date: 2011-11-07 09:19 pm (UTC)In my accent, "Colin" is pronounced like "call-in". I used to joke that when my grandmother asked my grandfather (named 'Earl') what to name their child he replied, "Well, sure, call 'im 'Earl'!"
Hence, Colin Earl. :p I always thought it was funny.

Date: 2011-11-07 06:30 pm (UTC)Jan is kind of cute, but I don't think I could use that either because I would want to use it as a nickname and I don't like any of the long forms AND it will always remind me of The Brady Bunch.
Colin is nice enough, and I think Tatiana is really neat.

Date: 2011-11-07 09:21 pm (UTC)No one ever believes that Mum's name is just "Jan", nothing else.
I love Tatiana's name! Her mum is Portuguese and the way that her maternal family says her name is just beautiful. My side of the family utterly butchers it and it's always bothered me.
