Another new one...
Nov. 7th, 2011 12:32 pmHello! I've browsed this community before, but decided to join after I saw it in the spotlight this morning. I'm a boring old Jennifer, and my husband is the male boring name equivalent of Michael Peter, haha, so when we had our son in July, we wanted to give him an interesting name, but not a crazy weird one that could be made fun of too easily. We're both Pete's all Irish, and I'm half-Irish, so we were sticking to those sorts of names. Anyway, If it was a girl, she would have been Fiona, but it ended up being a boy, so we went with Finn McCool Young. We based the name on the Irish folk hero -- I know the original spelling is Fionn mac Cumhaill, but the pronunciation is Finn McCool, so we went with the easier spelling, for his sake, hahaha! Anyway, I guess my question is, what do you think? Weird? I know Finn is becoming pretty common, with the whole Glee thing, but I thought McCool was a different and kind of neat middle name. Obviously I'm not going to change his name or anything, I'm just wondering about your opinions.
Also, just so this isn't only about my son, here are some other names of some children of friends of mine, what do you think of these?
Kai
Baine
Bastien
And behind the cut are a couple of pictures of my little Finn.

Date: 2011-11-07 11:12 pm (UTC)I'm not sure about Baine either -- sounds like a videogame character to me! Bastien is a french name of some sort, I'm sure, but I agree, I'd like it better as a nn for Sebastien.

Date: 2011-11-07 05:55 pm (UTC)Honestly, Finn goes into the category of trendy/popular for me... although I'm not sure how common it is among babies. Not a fan of McCool, it seems like you're trying really hard to make him... cool lol. But it is unique, which you were going for :)

Date: 2011-11-07 11:13 pm (UTC)I was a little disheartened to learn how popular/trendy Finn was the past few years -- it's always been on our boy's name list, but I figured that it wouldn't be as bad as a Michael or a Christopher yet!

Date: 2011-11-07 06:50 pm (UTC)McCool is interesting. I'm indifferent about it. I would have used the original spelling, especially since it's a middle name. I like where it came from!
I like Bastien as a nn for Sebastien. I don't like Baine (Bane reference) and I think Kai seems like a "trying too hard" name.

Date: 2011-11-07 11:17 pm (UTC)I thought the same thing about Kai -- it's okay, but kinda meh for me. Baine sounds like a videogame character to me, I'm not a big fan.

Date: 2011-11-07 11:18 pm (UTC)It sucks when a name gets so overused in people close to you that it just seems common. We have a lot of Chris', Jens and Michaels!
