A post down there made me think of this.

Victoria, spelled WIKTORIA on mty bff's 4 year old niece. It's a Polish thing, I guess, but WDYT?

Wiktoria is a perfectly acceptable Polish name, imo.

I dont mind name's spelt in a traditonal cultural way, thats perfectly fine imo, but if you have no connections to a culture yet you spell your childs name with added K's, or Y's or W's to make it look like a distinct culture, that's silly.

I nominate it as a community game once the spotlight craziness dies down.

If you live in the country great but if you don't I feel bad for the kid who is going to spend her life correcting people's spelling of her name

oh, i do love them... but i wouldn't have a kid in the united states with a gaelic name. the idea of associating different sounds with otherwise recognizable letters/symbols is totally lost on americans.

yes we used to joke that my friend's names (Oonagh and Aoife) were "spelled with an 8". Sort of blinkered of us but funny, maybe.

Gaelic is pretty crazy in its spelling but I'd still have to give craziest pronunciation to the Poles where "krzyz" is pronounced "shush" and all that jazz!

I have a Polish name too, I know they're rather intimidating to read and a pain in the ass to live with!

Well, my first though was "It looks Polish"
So with that, I think it's Polish. It's ok.

I'm very Polish (75% if you count both sides of the family), but never thought about using a Polish name as my last name is no longer Polish. However, one of my cousins really connects with the Polish heritage and wanted to name is son Wiktor. His wife was concerned that people would keep mispronouncing it, so they settled on Viktor.

Because of that, I guess I've kind of gotten used to the W for a V in Polish names, but think it sounds better if you have a Polish last name, and that parents should be aware that they and their child will constantly be telling people how to pronounce it.

It doesn't surprise me. I found out that my great-great-grandmother Veronica actually spelled her name Weronika.
