[identity profile] aunabjo.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I decided to join this community to get some opinions on a couple of names. My fiance and I are expecting our first baby, a boy, in March. We can't decide between the first name for him. We are choosing between the following:
 Sawyer Allen Holleran
Rowan Allen Holleran

I love both! Love love both!
Good luck! If I had to vote I'd say Rowan!

Rowan is one of our nephews and Sawyer was our number two name choice for our 8 week old (we went with Leonardo n.n. Leo). So, I looove both names, but am partial to Sawyer.

I like both, but for some reason, I really like Rowan. Sawyer has more connotations attached: think Tom Sawyer or Sawyer from Lost. Rowan has...Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean and Blackadder). Just something to consider.

I really like Sawyer. The only Rowan I know in real life is a little girl so it's feminine to me (even though I know it was a boy's name first).

Why not combine them? Many children these days have 2 middle names instead of only one.

'Rowan Sawyer Allen Holleran'

Or maybe leave out the Allen all together, though I have a feeling Allen is important in some way.

I think the names definitely have two very different connotations, but I like Rowan a lot more.

I like Sawyer Allen Holleran more. Rowan Allen Holleran has way too many -an/en endings. Sawyer Allen flows better too, IMO.

Rowan Allen makes me think of Rowan Atkinson somewhat. I don't care for how all three names end in the -an sound. Because of these factors, I think Sawyer edges out as the winner.

I've always seen Sawyer and Rowan as sort of feminine, but if I were to chose from the two I would say Rowan.

I prefer Rowan but I think Rowan Allen doesn't flow as well as Sawyer Allen.

Rowan. Definitely Rowan.

My two cents: Sawyer is a lot more likely to be mispronounced. You might get SOY-er or SAW-yer or something else entirely. Rowan I feel like most people know how to say. I also think Rowan flows better with Allen Holleran than Sawyer - with Rowan, all three names end with N, and the shape of the mouth that you need to produce Sawyer is dissimilar to the other names, the tension in the tongue especially.

If those kinds of things matter to you, I personally would pick Rowan. Both are excellent names, though! :D

See, I actually thought the opposite - I'm not exactly sure how to say Rowen (is the first syllable like row or brow?) but I thought Sawyer was always pronounced the same way!

I'm confused - I've always pronounced Sawyer as SAW-yer. This is probably just ignorance as I've only ever read it in Huckleberry Fin. How is it meant to be pronounced? So I don't embarrass myself in future!

welcome

two cents: ;)

Our oldest is Rowan, as I wanted a surprise and therefore a unisex name. And I <3 Blackadder. :D

Still... I agree that the -an repetition is a little awkward. Couldn't say it's a deal breaker, but something to consider.
I don't particularly happen to care for Sawyer, but that's just me.

(Rowan Allen was an option for us way back when as well; my father is an Allen. :) )

I love Rowan. I like both, but I like Rowan with Allen more than Sawyer with Allen.
