So I realize that I have really no room to talk, seeing as I do not have any children (yet), but one of my biggest pet peeves is sibling names that simply don't sound like a "set". Now I'm not talking about numbering your kids or naming them after colors, don't get me wrong.

I think my family does an "okay" job at sibling sets. For instance, Ashley, Joshua, and April are myself and my siblings. Edgar, James, Terry, and Patricia are my mother's siblings.

What do you folks think? Do you think that names should sound "similar" between siblings? Can you name one child Jack and the other Gunnerkrigg and not seem foolish?

I love your example! It made me laugh so much. I can see your point though. It would seem really odd to have Jose, Gunther, and Etienne in the same family.

Kinda off subject but...

Just out of curiosity, how is that second name pronounced? Like Rachel? Like "rascal"? It looks like it would be said like "racial", but I've no idea.

That's one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to names. I don't mean sibling names have to be matchy matchy either (like naming your kids Jayden and Jaylyn; that's probably my other big naming pet peeve). Is it that hard to find a nice balance?!

Oh my god, yes. I know a pair of siblings named Krista and Kristoff. If you're not paying attention, it's really easy to mishear them in a conversation.

Yea they're know as sib-sets :) it's a common thing to consider when naming your kids.

My parents did a weird job with us: my brother is Dermott (after my dad), my sister is Eunice (after my grandmother) then my next sister is Heather (which is a lovely name but doesn't go at all IMHO) and then there's me: Rhian.

I feel like as far as my family goes, my name fits in with my siblings and Heather's doesn't really go.

i apologize if i've asked you this before, but how is your name pronounced?

I explain it like "the first part of the word reincarnation" lol (or you separate the sounds out so you're emphasizing "Ian" (like the boys name) and the first part is just an Rh sound...if my name started with an S it would sound like She-in)

Or if you know the fleetwood mac song Rhiannon it's like that but without the extra non on the end

That's pretty confusing for such a short name! I thought it was like Ryan.

Lols it's actually not confusing, you were just emphasizing the 'i' incorrectly.

oh neat! i remember seeing it before in the community and thought it was a nickname for rhiannon. i think it looks cool - i seem to like a lot of feminine rh- names :) (rhea, rhonda, rhiannon...)

Lol. Im wondering this myself, as I really like a few Greek names, but also some Russian and "made up" names as well. If you like the name, use it! When I meet people they don't ask my sister's name, so I don't think it should be a huge deal.

Well, yeah, you should probably try to make the names fit with the others, but if you go with two names that are in the Top 100, but want to choose one that currently isn't (like Paul or Stephanie), is that cool? Maybe as long as you don't throw a bunch of different cultures' names (Raquel, Keiko, Ioan, and Nzingha probably sound odd together).

Also, how many siblings qualifies as a set? My mother is one of 13: Jim (James), Gloria, Mark, Terry (Mary Theresa), Helen, Dan, Molly (Margaret Mary), Vincent, Marion, (Madeleine) Sophie, Anne, Peter, Brigid. Would you say those names fit together?

I would, since a good portion are biblical.

My sister is Anna and I'm Louisa, I guess the A at the end could be seen as a 'set'. I don't know if it bothers me but I get what you mean. It is weird if one kid is either burdened with a weird name whilst the others aren't. Or the flip side for me would I'd be jealous if someone had a weird name I was stuck with a more common one :P

I agree to a certain point. We're expecting a baby in April and we have a hard time with boy names. We don't know the sex yet but I'm honestly terrified it'll be a boy because we can't find a name that we both like and goes well with my daughter's name...So I guess at this point, finding a name for this baby is more important than making sure it'll fit well with his siblings.

For girls, it's much easier and all the names I like fit well as a sib-set.

My Good Friend and her brothers and sisters have I guess you could call it "set" names. In that they're all unusual but not far too out there. My friends brothers and sisters names in order are: Gypsy(f), Jasmine(f), Koral(f), Jarrah(m), Lacey(f) and Wade(m). I think they work as a "set" as half are common and the other half not so much. (My brother and I Have Traditional Danish Names, but Lithuanian Last names. Mine Father being Lithuanian but our Mother being From Danmark. Gaby and Silas)

It's funny because I've just recently started thinking about how we screwed ourselves by naming our daughter Ziva. If/when we have another kid and it's a girl, it's not like we can just name her Mary. It would sooo not work. I feel like if it's a boy, we can use a more common name and it's okay because it's boy/girl combo but if we have another girl - I have NO idea what we'd name her.

There are heaps of Israeli names that would go with Ziva. Or names that come from Israeli names.

Eg:

Tali
Maya
Rivka
Dina
Dana
Hannah...

Lots of them...

But I don't LOVE any of those the way I love Ziva. I'm sure if/when we have another kid I'll fall in love with another name but I just can't think of it for now.

welcome

I'm a twin, and I have to say, one of my biggest pet peeves is when people think they're being cute by having rhyming names.

That being said, I do think that the names should seem like they were chosen by the same people.

Just came upon this community- thought I'd comment on this. I have a very unusual first name (Fiana) that my parents made up, and my sister's legal name is Allison. The funny thing is that when they picked her name, they thought they were being uncommon because my mom hadn't heard anyone named it in years. Ooops.. So I wound up loving my name because of how original it is, and my sister hated hers and decided to invent her own nickname which she goes by to this day. [Though I personally think she would have hated any name she was given.]

That's another interesting question someone should pose (though I'm sure it has been)..whether people prefer to have a common name or an uncommon one.

My ex husband's name was David. Plain, ordinary nice name. His sister's name was Silver. Most definitely not a set.

Interesting that later she decided to go by "Amy."

I've never even thought of that before. I guess I don't pay attention to my friends' siblings' names!

My husband and his siblings' names (and even his parents' names) all start with the same letter though, and I think that is really tacky when people do that. Apparently it was an accident, somehow, lol. There are 4 kids in his family.

A flow is nice, but when I'm considering names, I don't really think of how it sounds with everyone else's names, though I do have a distinct style so I have a good sib set going on. When I see sib sets with a black sheep name or just all over naming styles I figure the people have ever drastic changing styles. Or, sometimes, you really don't even know. My father in law's name is Alex, which is completely normal and no big deal...except his 9 older siblings who ALL have "J" names.

My kids are Elijah, Amelia, and Esme. My top names are Wendy, Alice, and Adele for girls, Elliott, Henry, and River for boys. River is totally out of left field considering the other names, maybe it's a good thing I don't plan on birthing a baseball team:)

I like names that sound like they belong together. I really do go o.O when I see families whose kids' names are all over the place. I know this family who has 4 boys: Liam, Joe, Eamon, Jack. except for all being irish sounding, they kind of, um, span the range of super-common to more out-there.

Pick the names you like. They don't have to go. (for the most part) The same people picked them, and they're siblings, so that makes them a set. I have different tastes amongst names. All the same style might end up too boring; and in some cases, obviously dated after a certain period of time.

Most names will go together if you put them together and use them together enough.

My girls are Jovi and Aven. I think they make a good sibset. But I am with you... I want names to "match" without being too matchy-matchy. It's a fine line between CUTE! and "...wtf??"

I've never thought about it! lol My brother and I are Jennifer and Jonathan ... there were times Mom would start out with one, but mean the other and switch, mid-name, so I'd get called Jonnifer and he'd be Jennathan. LOL

Go with whatever you like. =)

My ex's name is Jimmy, (yes, just like that, on his birth certificate), and his sister's name is Alethia. I always thought that was kind of odd, the difference in tone between the two names.
