give me the best (worst) you've got

After a lot of posts about creative names and spellings and such...

Do YOU have a creative name? Do you know someone who does? How does she/he deal with it?

The only one I can think of is a kid I work with. He goes by Jeff; that's the spelling he has on his name tag, the spelling he uses on Facebook.. the spelling I would assume he had if I hadn't seen the legal version written on the schedule: Jephthe. Oy.

[identity profile] cielamara.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Jephthe is an old Biblical name. It's the name of a man who promises to sacrifice the first member of his household if he wins a battle...the first person he sees is his only child, a daughter. There's a stunning but not-well-known oratorio about it. (And really, the only reason I know about it.)

[identity profile] harri-cady.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
My name: Cady (rhymes with lady). It's my grandmother's maiden name. I get called Caddy, Cody, Candy, etc. all the time. It's frustrating, but I love that my name isn't plain old Katie, and that it has family significance.

I'm a teacher, so I've seen some names in my time. :) The most creative was Ky-Jaya. I tried to type out how to pronounce it and I can't even figure out what letters to use for the J sound. :/

[identity profile] harinakshi.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I got your name right before I saw the lady part. Doesn't seem that hard! But I find it funny that, I'm guessing, someone just figured it was misspelled and called you candy.

Nope, not really.

I mean, my best friend in high school was named Russell. That was a bit odd for him because it's mostly a last name, especially with that spelling, but that's about it.

I did meet a lady with the name Paralee, though. I asked her out to pronouce it and she said "Para-Lee, like, a Pair A Levi's." I've never heard or see the name since.

I can say I feel sorry with those with unusual spelling, though. My name is Savanah. I have to spell it out to EVERYONE. And EVERYONE gets it wrong. It's either because there is only one N or because there is an H at the end. I think my husband was the only person to write it out right the first time...that made me so happy, LOL. But other than him, everyone messes it up. Some people have even tried to spell it with a B instead of a V. It's quite annoying that my name is so complicated for people and I've gotten pretty used to getting mail from companies, etc with my name misspelled. It was especially hard until my late teens because the name just wasn't used. I used to hate my name because it was "Weird" and in the 90's, it was. I never met anyone with that name, until I hit my teens and parents would be yelling at or talking to their kids in stores, and these little 3 year olds had my name...I couldn't figure out why the lady was yelling at me! Still, I've only heard it a handful of times, and only once on a girl around my age.

Russell is a completely normal name! I'm not even sure how else you could spell that1

I have a second cousin named Moniqua (Monica).

And I once encountered a girl in high school who had a creative spelling because her dad misspelled her name on birth certificate. I can't remember what her name was now.

[identity profile] joereaves.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Heck my name isn't even *creative* and I am heartily sick of spelling it. (I'm a Kathryn and there's several accepted spellings of that so no one ever knows which one). I think for any kids I had I'd try to go for names that have one accepted spelling just for everyone's, including the child's, convenience. Especially if like me they had a surname no one can spell or pronounce.

[identity profile] g-unit-kat.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
yayy i'm kathryn too. and no one can ever spell it! haha

I'm one of a myriad of Jennifers, but I go by Jena...i picked it in eighth grade, I omitted the second n because there was a Jenna who would be going to the same HS as me (we grew up in the same neighbourhood but went to different schools) and she was a snob and I didn't want to be anything like her.

I often get called Geena or Jaynuh, but I like it.

[identity profile] kilobites.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
My name isn't creative at all (it's Natasha, I go by Tasha) but people can't seem to get it right. I have a couple friends with unnecessary y's in their names, though ;)

[identity profile] girlsteve.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if it counts as 'creative', but my name is Steve and I'm a girl. Loads of problems with post and forms, everything gets addressed to Mr or it gets changed to Steph, and I'm forever having to repeat myself...but for all that, I still really like it. I'm never at a loss for something to say when I'm meeting people!

[identity profile] relevancedenied.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 11:01 am (UTC)(link)
really, steve? that's... kind of neat, haha.

[identity profile] penguiny7.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
My middle name is Elyse. Not that I have to spell it out often, so it's never a big deal.

[identity profile] thellamaqueen.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
My name is Krysta, which isn't a terribly uncommon name but the spelling is pretty uncommon. I always, ALWAYS have to spell it for people if I want them to get it right. Usually people think it is supposed to be "Krystal", which irritates the crap out of me because I think "Krystal" is not such a nice name. :\
I love my name, though, regardless of how annoying it is to have to spell it all the time.

[identity profile] harinakshi.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the movie Fern Gully:) Wasn't her name spelled the same?

[identity profile] gaspardgroupie.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
My name is Georgia; people never get the spelling or the pronounciation right. It's usually 'George-eee-a'.

Wow, you'd think that one would be pretty straightforward. Weird.

My name is Jerika, and I silently clap for those who pronounce it right the first time. I don't think it's that hard, and my parents didn't, but almost every teacher I've had has pronounced incorrectly, some even after being corrected.

I went to high school with a girl named Tamberlee (pronounced tam-BURR-lee). she gets called Tambourine a lot by people who don't know her. I'm not quite sure why.

[identity profile] solitudete.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I know a girl named Lylyana. I think it's a terrible way to spell Liliana.

[identity profile] soltire.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I had a friend in high school named Adaeze, but went by Daisy. She is from Nigeria and it is a common name there, not just a kre8tiv spelling of Daisy...I have no idea how to pronounce it correctly, though. Teachers would stumble over it at first, but she would just say "it's Daisy" and be done with it. Her name is Daisy on Facebook, but I think she always used Adaeze on school papers and such.

My name is Lorien (middle name Ellen), from Lord of the Rings. Since the movies have come out more people recognize it, but pretty much everyone my whole life has had a hard time with pronounciation even though it is phonetic. I get a lot of variations of Lorien or sometimes people hear me say my name as "Gloria" in a crowded room or if they're hard of hearing. I usually say Lorien... pronounced like DeLorean. I LOVE having a unique name, though. :-)

[identity profile] blueberryeyes17.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean a lot of variations of Lauren, or Lori Anne.

[identity profile] nobodynomore.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a normal name, with the more uncommon spelling. Aimee. I have always really liked it.

[identity profile] velkoria.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I like this sooo much better than Amy.

[identity profile] velkoria.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
My sister has always spelled her name Irene. Though here you tell the name to the person and *they* write it on the birth certificate... the person on duty that day was an idiot that wrote it with a Y. So like... she is Yrene but only on legal documents and she plans on changing it in the future to Irene.

[identity profile] harinakshi.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
You can't tell them how to spell it? I live in California and I tell the lady what the name is and then spell it to her and she writes it down.

I'm Lesley. Not terribly unusual (it's actually the more feminine spelling), but it is always spelled wrong. I've never liked the name Leslie AT ALL, but it seems rather out of character for my parents to name me something "different". I'm glad, though. Even if I still wish my name were Xytoplaxia, Destroyer of Realms.

[identity profile] harvestlunacorn.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's creative but my name is Mariah and I go by Rya. Both names get mangled with spelling or pronunciation. I'm mostly called Maria(ma-ree-uh) but often I am called Marian too. As for my nickname very few people say rye-uh, it's always ree-uh or ray-uh.
With spelling, most people spell my name Maria, or Moriah, Meriah, Miriah.

[identity profile] harinakshi.livejournal.com 2009-09-22 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
You would think with Mariah Carey people would be able to get it right.

I'm a Karlie. Sometimes people think it's spelled Carly, but more often than that, I get called Claire by mistake.

I work with a Talei (TAH-lay) and my mother's name is Lo-Ann. My name isn't creative (Kayla), but it gets mistaken for Kara and even Carol when I say it over the phone, and quite often people call me Karla.

[identity profile] ifancylust.livejournal.com 2009-09-23 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
my name is hana, which is pronounced HAH-nuh. everyone calls me hannah though or spells it hannah/hanna..even people who have known me for years!

i can understand people mispronouncing it at first, but when i introduce myself and say, "hi, i'm hana" and someone says, "oh! nice to meet you, hannah!" i want to slap them. did you NOT just hear me?

[identity profile] nandy-pandy.livejournal.com 2009-09-24 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I have a cousin named Grayce, and she just got sick of the spelling and goes by Grace now. Her mother (who is Spanish) thought the Y was supposed to be there when she named her.
