I really hope I dont have a baby soon, my favourite names change on a daily basis. I would so be one of those parents who let their kid go nameless for a week, hehehe.
How important is the meaning of a name to you? Does it really matter?
When you were growing up did you really think about it?
THANKS : )
BOYS:
Tobias: God is great
Clayton: town on Clay Land
Koen: brave and gallant
Harvey: army warrior

Date: 2006-06-19 06:45 pm (UTC)Lindsay means "Linden Trees Near the Water", so it's not like I even thought about it really, haha.
I think when I name my kids someday, I might give them a mn with a meaning: strength, courage, knowledge, etc. or something that means something to me. But for the most part, I like names simply because I like them.

Like the other day when I said, "My name means compassion, wisdom, and strength!" and my sister said, "...Mine is a plant." LOL

Date: 2006-06-19 06:56 pm (UTC)My boy name is a name that is a well recognized, legitimate, old-fashioned name. It is very uncommon today, and I have never seen it mentioned in this community before. I just like the name! It's meaning isn't important to me.

Date: 2006-06-19 07:11 pm (UTC)If it were a name I loved, I'd use it regardless of the meaning.. but I guess if it was a name I was iffy on, and it turned out to mean "ugly" or "bald".. I might reconsider.
I don't know.. I don't think it matters a bit.

Date: 2006-06-19 07:13 pm (UTC)My mom liked the name Guinevere, which means fair, white and smooth. The original namesake was an adulterer, according to BTN. My dad overruled with Rosalie, after a Grateful Dead song "Rosalee McFall," so my mom chose Margaret after her aunt Margaret Rose.
Meaning IS important to me. My favorite name is Lenora, and I like its variations, Lenore, Eleanor, etc., which all mean Light. My favorite middle names are Joy, Grace, Faith and Rose, which are all pretty self-explanatory.
My favorite boy names are Dominic, "of the Lord," Christopher, "bearing Christ," and Emanuel, "God is with us."
I also love these names, which have no special meaning to me at all:
Austin: a city in Texas and a form of Augustine
Cameron: crooked nose
Addison: From a surname meaning son of Adam
Isabel: Hispanic form of Elizabeth (which does mean "God is my oath," which is very special.
So yeah...meaning is pretty important to me. Thanks for making me think about that!

Date: 2006-06-19 08:29 pm (UTC)Tobias: it's OK
Clayton: don't really like it
Koen: don't really like it
Harvey: don't really like it. This is gross, but my husband and his friends call burps that taste like throw-up "Harveys." I don't know if anyone else does this?
GIRLS:
Isaura: OK. It seems like it would be "I saw her" or a dinosaur like, the Isaurus Rex.
Dagny: don't like
Penelope: LOVE

Date: 2006-06-19 09:55 pm (UTC)I do like to know the meaning but it's generally not enough to discourage me from liking a name. My number one fave, Mara, means "bitter" - so perhaps not the best meaning but I will still use that name!

Date: 2006-06-20 09:12 pm (UTC)I've always liked the fact Sophia means wisdom/philosopher, It made me really into greek myths as the goddess of wisdom is Athena. My favourite book is Sophie's World, I chose on the basis of reading something with my name in it but it really changed my life! The character was 'Sophie' as the book is a histpry of philosophy.
However, after all that- it doesnt really suit me, i'm commonsense-less lol.
