1. What is your preferred spelling of /Lee/? I always think of Leigh for a girl and Lee for a boy. But I'm sure you could write Li, Lei, Lea, or other possibilities. What seems "normal" to you?

2. How do you feel about nicknames? My husband is a "my name is Daniel, NOT Dan, thankyouverymuch" kind of person. He believes you should name the child what you plan on calling it (if you want to call your kid Tim, name him Tim and not Timothy). I'm on the other side. I wish my name (Sarah) had an obvious nickname, because I think nicknames are friendly and/or intimate. Where do you stand?

3. What do you people DO all day? This is the most active community I've ever been in. ;)

1. I agree. I would use Leigh for a girl and Lee for a boy.

2. I adore nicknames. My nieces have helped to create some of mine. I love having nicknames because it makes me feel unique to the person who creates it. I plan on naming my children with names that nicknames are possible. I usually use full names when I mean business.

3. I know I just joined and I love it here.

1. Leigh, because it is my name :)

2. I think nicknames should happen naturally, if you use them. My husband is Daniel, too. I call him Danny because it just seems right! I'm not planning any nicknames for my baby.

3. Heh. Well, somedays I substitue for 2 hours in the morning at a preschool summer camp if they need extra help preparing lunch. Other than that, I take care of house, husband & pregnancy. On a normal day, I sleep in until about 9:00-9:30, eat breakfast while I do computery things or watch TV, go to the gym for some treadmill if I feel up to it, then get myself ready for the day. I might start some laundry, while I do touch ups on the house. I do touch ups so often that it never actually gets dirty. I do any errands needed on the way back from the gym or after I get dressed & clean.

Then it is about lunch time... I maybe have lunch with a friend or my mom. Sometimes my husband will come home for lunch. Then I do something funish, this is usually some kind of decorating thing, shopping (love this one), buying things for the baby (on the way), or getting a manicure and pedicure (on Fridays), going for a swim, watch TV or a movie, go to the movies with a friend or mom... There is usually a 30min-hour nap in here somewhere. And some relaxing...Then between 5-6 I make dinner, or make plans for dinner.

I always do livejournal between things when I sit down to rest. Like after I get out the shower I will lounge on the bed in my robe on my laptop. Or anytime I get home from anywhere, I sit on the sofa with my laptop to cool off on the A/C (las vegas heat...ugh) and relax. A day like today, I didn't have any errands to do, don't feel like doing anything outside of the house...and have mostly been watching TV and tooting around on the computer. So, that's my day in a nutshell. A rather large nutshell.

Sadie and Sally are both traditional nicknames for Sarah. Perhaps one of those will appeal?

(I can comment on this because I'm a Sarah, too. ;-))

Yeah, see, I know Sadie and Sally are traditional nicknames, but they're not really obvious. Hard to explain. It's just not natural for Sarah to become Sadie. I don't know. While they are technically nicknames for Sarah, it doesn't make much sense, at least to me. Sadie with that hard D sound from Sarah? Sally with the L's? It just doesn't make sense to me.

I prefer Lee/Leigh--with no real gender specifics... Well, I guess, I think it's weird when a boy is Leigh... but not when a girl is Leigh or Lee and I suppose that's because I have more than 3 family members with the middle name Lee/Leigh, all female, spelled differently. So yeah.

I like nicknames, so I'd rather give me a kid a full name and then call them by their nickname UNLESS I don't actually like the full name. Take Theo for instance. I love Theo but don't much like Theodore. So I wouldn't name my kid Theodore, I'd just name him Theo.

1. For boys definately Lee. For girls either Leigh or Leah.

2. I definately agree with your husband. My dads name is Ronnie. Not Ronald.. Ronnie. So I guess I'm a little biased. :) I was thinking about naming my daughter "Charlee" instead of Charlotte or whatever. I just like it better. I guess sometimes it depends on the name and nickname though. I like Sadie as a nickname for Sarah.. but I think Sarah is a beautiful name without a nickname.

3. It's summer! I don't have anything to do besides read and stay online all day. :)

1. Leigh. It's a good friend's name and my sister's middle name. It's just always been the version in my life, lol. I too think of Leigh as the girl, Lee and the boy.

2. I love nicknames. Like you, I think nicknames are friendly, intimate and endearing. Like you, lol, my name is Sarah. I wish it had an obvious nickname, too. My last name (Carnes) has morphed into "Carnzie" over the years, and a few people (including my best friend) call me that. My aunt says Sari (sare-ee) sometimes. But yeah, I'm totalllllly with you on this question.

3. For some reason it's been REALLY active this week. Something's just gotten into us! LOL

1. I like Lee for a boy and Leigh for a girl. Lea looks like "Le-ah" to me.

2. I'm with your husband in that I despise when people name their children nicknames (ex. Katie instead of Catherine, or Ben instead of Benjamin). It's sort of a pet peeve of mine. I don't mind nicknames, but at least this way, the child gets the option of the full name or the nicknames that come with it. I did recently post about how I don't much like the nicknames for my favorite boy name, Henry. If we end up having a son and using it, I hope people call him Henry.

3. I'm a college student. ;D

2. Her husband doesn't like the nickname associated with his name, but he thinks you *should* name a kid a nickname if that's what it is going to be called. Not sure if you misunderstood.

3. Me too. ;-)

I generally agree with the full/nick name theory of the kid having options.

1. I haven't really thought about it but I guess I would use Leigh for a girl and Lee for a boy.

2. I am usually of the same mindset as your husband when it comes to nicknames.

3. I work at a school so I am off for the summer (and I still get paid because my work pays people over a 12 month period!).

1. I love Lee as a boy. I wouldn't spell it at all for a girl, don't care for it as a girl name. I'd assume any spelling other than Lee was a girl though.

2. I love nns. I like the options. I like being able to give friends permission to call me something more intimate, while in professional situations I have a more formal name to use. I just like them.

My sister's name is Sara and she goes by Sally.

1. My middle name is Lee and I'm a girl, but I actually prefer the spelling "Leigh." It seems less plain, if that makes sense.
The spellings seem normal for either gender to me.

2. I'm a Margaret but have been called Maggie since I was born. Although I guess it's good that I can choose to have a more "grown-up" name as I get older, I hated it when I was a kid. I dreaded the first day of school because I'd always have to correct the teacher during roll call, which was embarassing. And I hated the reaction I got when other kids discovered that Maggie was only a nickname, which led to more embarassment, especially since Margaret is an "old lady name". And come to think of it, neither of those have changed much. I still hate the first roll call of the year :]

If it's an obvious nickname, I don't think it's much of a problem. Jennys are generally assumed to be Jennifers, and Matts are assumed to be Matthews. My name was a bit of a stretch for little kids who didn't know better, and I can see how it would be hard to be named one thing and called something really different.

1. I see Lee as a boy's name and Leigh as a girl's name same as you.

2. I LOVE nicknames. I like being able to have a more professional name for work/school/people who don't know me too well, but I also like my family and friends to be able to call me something else. Btw, my name is Emily, but I go by Em to family and friends. And my husband is Jacob, but goes by Jake. And most of the names I like for our future kids will all be shortened to nicknames as well.

1. Leigh is normal to me for girls. It's the spelling of my middle name. Lee for boys. Li if they're asian though, but I usually think of it as a surname if it's spelled that way.

2. I like them, but I think the person should really be able to pick their own. I would hate to be a "Jessi" but most people call me "Jess" instead of Jessica (though I still introduce myself as Jessica). I like giving kids a name that can be nicknamed in many ways, so it gives them more of an option as they are growing up.

Though it can be hard to shed the "kid nickname." I think my younger brother will always be Danny to me, though people who know him now (he's nearly 17) call him Dan. His given name is Daniel. My uncle had a hard time making the transition from Kenny to Ken (His name is Kenneth) when he wanted to go into the workplace because all his friends said Kenny.

1. Leigh is the girl way (my mn) & Lee is the boy way.
2. I like nicknames, but am very picky about them for my own kids. I'm unsure when it comes to picking out names for future children, whether or not I'd go for a "nicknamey name" only.

There is the other side to this too, which is that when you name a kid Just Katie or Just Dan, people assume that they are really Katherines or Daniels as opposed to "no, that IS my whole name...it's short for NOTHING". lol

3. I stay at home with my daughter (& step son when he's not at school/camp). but I did just get a PT job so I have been around less. and you know, I think this community was dead for MONTHS before about a week or two ago then suddenly, it has been CRAZY. :)

2. I'm for obvious nicknames. Most people call me by my nickname, which is also a very common stand-alone type name. Then if people hear my given name, they don't realize it's me! And people don't understand my given name on the phone, but it's my email address at work, so I get stuck explaining it alot.

So I like name with nicknames that are common (most Tim's are Timothy's, most Liz's are Elizabeth's) and obviously not stand alone type names...just makes it more trouble.

1. Leigh for a girl, Lee for a boy.

2. I like nicknames; most of the names on my list can be shortened in some way. I've given all of my friends nicknames or pet names, too (kind of off-beat ones, like Rics for Erica).

3. I'm a rising senior in high school, and it's summer. I really don't know what happened here, though - it just exploded one day. At least half of the posts on any page of my flist are from this community. It's insane, but fun. :)

One of my best friends is named Erica as well, and I've called her Urk for as long as I can remember... and she calls me Ash-head (I'm Ashli). She's 24 and I'm 23 now, and it's been going on since we were both kids. I doubt it ever changes *grin* =)

2. I agree with your husband, and I hate when people "plan out" their child's nickname. If you want your kid to be called Jack, don't name him "John nn Jack" (or maybe it's the other way around - Jack nn John?). Just name him Jack!

3. A lot of this community is probably students who are on summer break. As for me, I work and take summer school but I'm on the internet a lot while I'm at work. :)

My preferred spelling is Lee, because Leigh is a different sound entirely (Lay). Li is only okay if you're Chinese, Lei is also Lay not Lee, but Lea is versatile.

I love nicknames and I think it just depends on the person, the family, etc. I kind of like the ideal of nicknames being personal and only used for friends and family.

And I work full time but I am severely ADD so I am always skipping around doing different things.

I always want to say Leigh like Lay, but everyone I know with the middle name Leigh says it's pronounced like Lee. I think most people here agree.

1. What is your preferred spelling of /Lee/? I always think of Leigh for a girl and Lee for a boy. But I'm sure you could write Li, Lei, Lea, or other possibilities. What seems "normal" to you?
Leigh or Lee for either sex is fine with me. Depends on what you're going for.

I don't use a nickname that comes from my name (just a pet name--Laura Bug), and I've never seen a real need to plan nicknames. Use a name, and let the nickname happen organically; that's my philosophy. I don't necessarily believe that you must "name a kid what you're going to call it," but I don't see what's so burdensome about calling a kid Timothy and using it interchangeably with Tim, using Tim in a more casual context.

3. What do you people DO all day? This is the most active community I've ever been in. ;) Hehe. I work in the office of a summer program for gifted children. I end up with big pockets of free time during the day.

Actually nick names are alright...I just get so annoyed with people sometimes.
For example-- Me "Hi nice to meet you my name is Daniel" other person " nice to meet you dan" Me thinking in my head "What a jack ass I introduced myself as daniel, if i wanted you to call me dan i would have said...Hi my name is daniel call me dan for short" but instead I am somewhat polite an say "Please call me daniel" or i will just ignore them because I don't know who dan, or danny is..I guess i am this way because everyone in my family always called me Daniel never any nicknames..well except wart but that was to piss me off..Brothers

1. I'm with you- Lee is male, Leigh is female.

2. I like names with lots of nicknames possible. Elizabeth could be Liz, Beth, Bess, Liza, Ellie, Ella, etc. I figure as people age, the name they prefer changes. My brother Daniel always has preferred Danny but now goes by Dan. My boyfriend preferred Dan and now goes by Daniel. I think options are best.

3. I read at night and during the day because my job only requires me 8 hours a week. I'm a college student taking a summer off to avoid going crazy.

1) Lee is male, and I like the look of Leah better for females.

2) This is the eternal debate between my boyfriend and I. He feels you should give the child a full name so that they can have a choice as they grow up. I think if you're just going to call them by a nickname, make it their legal name. An example is that he likes the name Samual. I don't mind Sam, but hate Samual. Especially when you're just going to call the kid Sam all the time anyway. I also don't see why the hypothetical child would need an option when our names are "Holly" and "Aaron" and we don't have any nickname options with our names really.

3) Office job in the summer, university student during the school year.

1. I know Leigh is the girls' spelling... but I just think that a "gh" in a name is so incredibly ugly. Personal preference for sure, it's one of the few cases where the legitimate spelling bothers me. I wouldn't use the name for a girl, but I just prefer Lee.. or anything other than Leigh.
In other names that can sometimes end with a -leigh I would prefer -ley, for example Ashley. (which is probably the original spelling anyway but my point is just that I'd never opt for the -leigh ending)

2. I think nicknames are useful and cool, but not always necessary. I don't really have any names I like that are exclusively nicknames, but if I did, I'd probably give them the full name and just call them by the nickname. Unless I hated the long name, I guess I'd give them the nickname then as a complete name if it wasn't too 'incomplete' sounding.
You can't do that the other way around though... you can't name a kid Christopher and expect them not to get called Chris... with some names you can (my brother James never gets called Jim)... but it's a pity if you love a longer name and hate the common nickname of it. I really like Joseph but Joe has negative connotations for me.

3. Coming here is a relaxing way to spend my free time =)

If you want to be called Christopher, you just introduce yourself that way and always write your full name. My boss's son is Benjamin, and they are doing their darndest to make sure no one calls him Ben. When he's older he can decide, but for now, his name is Benjamin.

1. I like Leigh for a girl, but I think that Lee works for both genders. Li isn't that bad either. But Leigh is the most natural to me.

2. I like nicknames, but I prefer them happening naturally. I adore my "real" name (Julia), but I also like it when I'm called Juli (only my family calls me that). I just let everyone come up with whatever they want to call me, but I always introduce myself as Julia. :)

3. I'm a college student on summer vacation. So not much. XP
