Jul. 6th, 2006 03:46 pm1. What is your preferred spelling of /Lee/? I always think of Leigh for a girl and Lee for a boy. But I'm sure you could write Li, Lei, Lea, or other possibilities. What seems "normal" to you?
2. How do you feel about nicknames? My husband is a "my name is Daniel, NOT Dan, thankyouverymuch" kind of person. He believes you should name the child what you plan on calling it (if you want to call your kid Tim, name him Tim and not Timothy). I'm on the other side. I wish my name (Sarah) had an obvious nickname, because I think nicknames are friendly and/or intimate. Where do you stand?
3. What do you people DO all day? This is the most active community I've ever been in. ;)

2. I'm a Margaret but have been called Maggie since I was born. Although I guess it's good that I can choose to have a more "grown-up" name as I get older, I hated it when I was a kid. I dreaded the first day of school because I'd always have to correct the teacher during roll call, which was embarassing. And I hated the reaction I got when other kids discovered that Maggie was only a nickname, which led to more embarassment, especially since Margaret is an "old lady name". And come to think of it, neither of those have changed much. I still hate the first roll call of the year :]
If it's an obvious nickname, I don't think it's much of a problem. Jennys are generally assumed to be Jennifers, and Matts are assumed to be Matthews. My name was a bit of a stretch for little kids who didn't know better, and I can see how it would be hard to be named one thing and called something really different.
