Jul. 6th, 2006 03:46 pm1. What is your preferred spelling of /Lee/? I always think of Leigh for a girl and Lee for a boy. But I'm sure you could write Li, Lei, Lea, or other possibilities. What seems "normal" to you?
2. How do you feel about nicknames? My husband is a "my name is Daniel, NOT Dan, thankyouverymuch" kind of person. He believes you should name the child what you plan on calling it (if you want to call your kid Tim, name him Tim and not Timothy). I'm on the other side. I wish my name (Sarah) had an obvious nickname, because I think nicknames are friendly and/or intimate. Where do you stand?
3. What do you people DO all day? This is the most active community I've ever been in. ;)

Date: 2006-07-07 12:02 am (UTC)2. I adore nicknames. My nieces have helped to create some of mine. I love having nicknames because it makes me feel unique to the person who creates it. I plan on naming my children with names that nicknames are possible. I usually use full names when I mean business.
3. I know I just joined and I love it here.

3. Heh. Well, somedays I substitue for 2 hours in the morning at a preschool summer camp if they need extra help preparing lunch. Other than that, I take care of house, husband & pregnancy. On a normal day, I sleep in until about 9:00-9:30, eat breakfast while I do computery things or watch TV, go to the gym for some treadmill if I feel up to it, then get myself ready for the day. I might start some laundry, while I do touch ups on the house. I do touch ups so often that it never actually gets dirty. I do any errands needed on the way back from the gym or after I get dressed & clean.
Then it is about lunch time... I maybe have lunch with a friend or my mom. Sometimes my husband will come home for lunch. Then I do something funish, this is usually some kind of decorating thing, shopping (love this one), buying things for the baby (on the way), or getting a manicure and pedicure (on Fridays), going for a swim, watch TV or a movie, go to the movies with a friend or mom... There is usually a 30min-hour nap in here somewhere. And some relaxing...Then between 5-6 I make dinner, or make plans for dinner.
I always do livejournal between things when I sit down to rest. Like after I get out the shower I will lounge on the bed in my robe on my laptop. Or anytime I get home from anywhere, I sit on the sofa with my laptop to cool off on the A/C (las vegas heat...ugh) and relax. A day like today, I didn't have any errands to do, don't feel like doing anything outside of the house...and have mostly been watching TV and tooting around on the computer. So, that's my day in a nutshell. A rather large nutshell.

Date: 2006-07-07 12:24 am (UTC)I like nicknames, so I'd rather give me a kid a full name and then call them by their nickname UNLESS I don't actually like the full name. Take Theo for instance. I love Theo but don't much like Theodore. So I wouldn't name my kid Theodore, I'd just name him Theo.

Date: 2006-07-07 12:29 am (UTC)2. I definately agree with your husband. My dads name is Ronnie. Not Ronald.. Ronnie. So I guess I'm a little biased. :) I was thinking about naming my daughter "Charlee" instead of Charlotte or whatever. I just like it better. I guess sometimes it depends on the name and nickname though. I like Sadie as a nickname for Sarah.. but I think Sarah is a beautiful name without a nickname.
3. It's summer! I don't have anything to do besides read and stay online all day. :)

Date: 2006-07-07 12:30 am (UTC)2. I love nicknames. Like you, I think nicknames are friendly, intimate and endearing. Like you, lol, my name is Sarah. I wish it had an obvious nickname, too. My last name (Carnes) has morphed into "Carnzie" over the years, and a few people (including my best friend) call me that. My aunt says Sari (sare-ee) sometimes. But yeah, I'm totalllllly with you on this question.
3. For some reason it's been REALLY active this week. Something's just gotten into us! LOL

Date: 2006-07-07 12:32 am (UTC)Yeah, see, I know Sadie and Sally are traditional nicknames, but they're not really obvious. Hard to explain. It's just not natural for Sarah to become Sadie. I don't know. While they are technically nicknames for Sarah, it doesn't make much sense, at least to me. Sadie with that hard D sound from Sarah? Sally with the L's? It just doesn't make sense to me.

Date: 2006-07-07 12:32 am (UTC)2. I'm with your husband in that I despise when people name their children nicknames (ex. Katie instead of Catherine, or Ben instead of Benjamin). It's sort of a pet peeve of mine. I don't mind nicknames, but at least this way, the child gets the option of the full name or the nicknames that come with it. I did recently post about how I don't much like the nicknames for my favorite boy name, Henry. If we end up having a son and using it, I hope people call him Henry.
3. I'm a college student. ;D

I generally agree with the full/nick name theory of the kid having options.

3. I work at a school so I am off for the summer (and I still get paid because my work pays people over a 12 month period!).

Date: 2006-07-07 01:02 am (UTC)2. I love nns. I like the options. I like being able to give friends permission to call me something more intimate, while in professional situations I have a more formal name to use. I just like them.
My sister's name is Sara and she goes by Sally.

Date: 2006-07-07 01:13 am (UTC)The spellings seem normal for either gender to me.
2. I'm a Margaret but have been called Maggie since I was born. Although I guess it's good that I can choose to have a more "grown-up" name as I get older, I hated it when I was a kid. I dreaded the first day of school because I'd always have to correct the teacher during roll call, which was embarassing. And I hated the reaction I got when other kids discovered that Maggie was only a nickname, which led to more embarassment, especially since Margaret is an "old lady name". And come to think of it, neither of those have changed much. I still hate the first roll call of the year :]
If it's an obvious nickname, I don't think it's much of a problem. Jennys are generally assumed to be Jennifers, and Matts are assumed to be Matthews. My name was a bit of a stretch for little kids who didn't know better, and I can see how it would be hard to be named one thing and called something really different.

Date: 2006-07-07 01:32 am (UTC)2. I LOVE nicknames. I like being able to have a more professional name for work/school/people who don't know me too well, but I also like my family and friends to be able to call me something else. Btw, my name is Emily, but I go by Em to family and friends. And my husband is Jacob, but goes by Jake. And most of the names I like for our future kids will all be shortened to nicknames as well.

Date: 2006-07-07 02:00 am (UTC)2. I like them, but I think the person should really be able to pick their own. I would hate to be a "Jessi" but most people call me "Jess" instead of Jessica (though I still introduce myself as Jessica). I like giving kids a name that can be nicknamed in many ways, so it gives them more of an option as they are growing up.
Though it can be hard to shed the "kid nickname." I think my younger brother will always be Danny to me, though people who know him now (he's nearly 17) call him Dan. His given name is Daniel. My uncle had a hard time making the transition from Kenny to Ken (His name is Kenneth) when he wanted to go into the workplace because all his friends said Kenny.

Date: 2006-07-07 02:19 am (UTC)2. I like nicknames, but am very picky about them for my own kids. I'm unsure when it comes to picking out names for future children, whether or not I'd go for a "nicknamey name" only.
There is the other side to this too, which is that when you name a kid Just Katie or Just Dan, people assume that they are really Katherines or Daniels as opposed to "no, that IS my whole name...it's short for NOTHING". lol
3. I stay at home with my daughter (& step son when he's not at school/camp). but I did just get a PT job so I have been around less. and you know, I think this community was dead for MONTHS before about a week or two ago then suddenly, it has been CRAZY. :)

Date: 2006-07-07 02:19 am (UTC)So I like name with nicknames that are common (most Tim's are Timothy's, most Liz's are Elizabeth's) and obviously not stand alone type names...just makes it more trouble.

Date: 2006-07-07 02:19 am (UTC)2. I like nicknames; most of the names on my list can be shortened in some way. I've given all of my friends nicknames or pet names, too (kind of off-beat ones, like Rics for Erica).
3. I'm a rising senior in high school, and it's summer. I really don't know what happened here, though - it just exploded one day. At least half of the posts on any page of my flist are from this community. It's insane, but fun. :)
