pronunciations.
i've been wanting to make this post for awhile now. basically it'll be members asking others: how is [name] pronounced?. it's not really a post asking how you prefer to pronounce a name..it's just that there are some names that i really do not know how to pronounce whatsoever and i figured that i'm not alone in this. i thought this could be helpful.
so i'll list mine and you list yours. hopefully we can help each other out. :]
how do you pronounce?
aoife?
rhiannon? (idk if it's REE-ann-inn or RYE-ann-inn)
also, if your name gets mispronounced often or if you know of names that are often mispronounced, post them here.
my example: my name is hana. it's not pronounced like hannah. it's more like HAH-nuh. it rhymes with nirvana. i get called hannah all the time. =/ that's not my name!! so, if you meet a 'hana', don't call her hannah! :]

Rhiannon - ree-an-on

*mini* name rant
Not KUR-sten. (My parents added the first 'e' thinking that would make the pronunciation more obvious... No such luck.)
Not Kristen.
Not Kristy.
Or Kirsty.
Or Kristina.
For Christ's sake, it's TWO syllables. Very basic syllables, at that.

i'm used to it though. if i hear the name hannah being yelled out, chances are i'll turn around.
do you have a middle name planned yet?

We're planning on Rose. It was grandma's name and it's also like she'll be a rose from Hana.

My daughter is Annika. "AHHH-nick-ah. NOT "AYNNN-nick-uh". Although occasionally she gets "ah-KNEE-kah" instead, but that one isn't so bad, because its what her brother calls her anyway, and as a nickname, it stucked. :-p
There was a name on my friend's sons's class list that I just couldnt figure out how to pronounce at all. It was some variation of the "jay/bray" type names, though.

Rhiannon - Rhee-ann-on
My name is Shanna.
I pronounce it as Shan-nah (Just like Hannah but with an S in front of it.
I am constantly having people pronounce my mane as either Shane-uh or (very similar to yours) SHAH-nuh. However, neither is the correct pronunciation of my name.
I don't mine the SHAH-nuh pn bc it is pretty similar to my name ...but the Shane-uh thing drives me crazy.
Once I correct someone though, they usually always get it right after that.

Rhiannon = it depends: the original Welsh form is Ree-ANN-oh-n, in the US it's often RYE-ann-en
A name that comes to mind for being mispronounced is Giovanni: I often hear Americans say JEE-oh-vahn-nee, but it's really JOE-vahn-nee.

Mine is Rya. Rye-uh. Not Ree-uh.

Rhiannon--I've always pronounced it Ree-ANN-en, just like the Fleetwood Mac song. I didn't realize there were people who pronounced it RYE-ann-en.

ree-ANN-in
I know a Hana who pronounces it like Hannah.

TELL HER SHE'S WRONG

But my mom's name... ohhh deaaar. It's DINA, rhymes with TINA! It's not Dinah. Dinah has an H on the end. When I answered the phone growing up, we knew who the telemarketers were by how they pronounced her name. We'd say, "She's not here, and we know who you are. Don't call again."
I knew an Ana. It was like your name, minus the H. I said Anna until I heard enough people call her Ana to realize that oh, she pronounces it how it looks... duh. So, sometimes I suck too.

Not Kyra.
Not Keira.
Call me Keer-uh and I'll hate you just a little bit.
My ex boyfriend's name is Fabian, and for some reason, it is impossible to get some people to say 'Fay-be-en'. They just can't get their heads around it; they called him 'Fab-ee-un'.
I have another friend named Hallam. I'll introduce him to someone, and they give me strange looks, and then say "Hi Callum!".
No. Hallam. Like Callum, yes, but with a distinct 'haaaaa' sound in front.

I pronounce Rhiannon like Rhee-AHN-nun. Its one of my favorites. =]
I still have problems with Saoirse. I want to say SHEER-sa, instead of SEER-sha.

My boyfriend is Rylan. He gets Ry-land, Rillin, Ryan, Riley, and Dylan.
I have a hard time pronouncing Saoirse.

My father's name is Clem. Technically it's Clement, but he goes by Clem. He's gotten an insane amount of misspellings and mispronunciations over the years.

Julie + Anne = Julianne.
I get Julian the most. If I was a boy and my mom named me Julian but spelt it like Julianne, I would be seriously pissed, alright? I mean, how can you see 'anne' and not think FEMALE?!

That was my physics teacher in high school, one time. He was calling out attendance, and he was like 'Juliannie?' And I was like 'JULIANNE!' I was mortified lol. Granted, it was only once, so it was probably just a slip up (mostly he got me and my friend Justine's names mixed up 8-/) but still. Seriously? Juliannie? If my parents had named me that... oh, my God. Luckily, my parents have brains lol.

It's pronounced Cuh-liss-uh, but I usually get anything from KIE-liss-uh, Kay-liss-uh, Klissa to people who openly admit they have no idea how to say it.
..and spelling? Let's not even go there.

Sorry, venting, haha. But it is so annoying. I always ask my parents why they couldn't have named me after Jerrica Benton's sister, Kimber. Because people would know how to say that.
