[identity profile] ifancylust.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
i've been wanting to make this post for awhile now. basically it'll be members asking others: how is [name] pronounced?. it's not really a post asking how you prefer to pronounce a name..it's just that there are some names that i really do not know how to pronounce whatsoever and i figured that i'm not alone in this. i thought this could be helpful.

so i'll list mine and you list yours. hopefully we can help each other out. :]
how do you pronounce?
aoife?
rhiannon? (idk if it's REE-ann-inn or RYE-ann-inn)

also, if your name gets mispronounced often or if you know of names that are often mispronounced, post them here.

my example: my name is hana. it's not pronounced like hannah. it's more like HAH-nuh. it rhymes with nirvana. i get called hannah all the time. =/ that's not my name!! so, if you meet a 'hana', don't call her hannah! :]

Rhiannon - ree-an-on

I knew someone with your pronunciation, but spelled Hanna. she was from Holland, but with one american parent, so they tried to go with names her american relatives would be able to handle.

*mini* name rant

Yeah, I'm a Kiersten. KEER-sten.

Not KUR-sten. (My parents added the first 'e' thinking that would make the pronunciation more obvious... No such luck.)

Not Kristen.
Not Kristy.
Or Kirsty.
Or Kristina.

For Christ's sake, it's TWO syllables. Very basic syllables, at that.

I have a friend named Kirsten who pronounces it the way you do. She's from the Netherlands, and she says everyone says it correctly there, but when she comes to Canada/the US, everyone calls her KUR-sten.

Your name is our number one girls name currently and I'm sure people will pronounce it wrong:)

I can feel your pain in a way. My maiden is easily mispronounced and some people just don't get it. That makes me a little relculant to use the name (especially because we have a fairly common last name with a unique spelling), but I figure that she can change her name when she's older if it's too annoying. It also has a special meaning for us, we drove to the town of Hana in Maui (you should just go there everyone pronounces it right) the day before we got married.

We're planning on Rose. It was grandma's name and it's also like she'll be a rose from Hana.

UGH people do that to my daughter, too. Her name is Eva - the Polish Eva, so it's pronounced "Eh-vah." I can't tell you how many times I've told people "Her name is Eh-vah." only to have them say "Hi AY-VUH/EEE-VUH!" UGH UGH UGH.

GAH I FEEL YOUR PAIN.

My daughter is Annika. "AHHH-nick-ah. NOT "AYNNN-nick-uh". Although occasionally she gets "ah-KNEE-kah" instead, but that one isn't so bad, because its what her brother calls her anyway, and as a nickname, it stucked. :-p

There was a name on my friend's sons's class list that I just couldnt figure out how to pronounce at all. It was some variation of the "jay/bray" type names, though.

Annika ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ I haven't heard that name in forever. I'd forgotten how much I love it.

Aoife - Ee-fa
Rhiannon - Rhee-ann-on

My name is Shanna.

I pronounce it as Shan-nah (Just like Hannah but with an S in front of it.

I am constantly having people pronounce my mane as either Shane-uh or (very similar to yours) SHAH-nuh. However, neither is the correct pronunciation of my name.

I don't mine the SHAH-nuh pn bc it is pretty similar to my name ...but the Shane-uh thing drives me crazy.

Once I correct someone though, they usually always get it right after that.

Aoife = EE-fah (like Eva with an f)
Rhiannon = it depends: the original Welsh form is Ree-ANN-oh-n, in the US it's often RYE-ann-en

A name that comes to mind for being mispronounced is Giovanni: I often hear Americans say JEE-oh-vahn-nee, but it's really JOE-vahn-nee.

argh, same here. my sister's name is Giullianna; can't even begin to tell you how many people try to say it as "gee-OO-lee-anna." wtf?!

Aoife--EE-fuh.

Rhiannon--I've always pronounced it Ree-ANN-en, just like the Fleetwood Mac song. I didn't realize there were people who pronounced it RYE-ann-en.

No one mispronounces my name (Gail), they just make fun of it (Gale force winds was funny maybe the first million times I heard it, but not anymore, so STFU).
But my mom's name... ohhh deaaar. It's DINA, rhymes with TINA! It's not Dinah. Dinah has an H on the end. When I answered the phone growing up, we knew who the telemarketers were by how they pronounced her name. We'd say, "She's not here, and we know who you are. Don't call again."

I knew an Ana. It was like your name, minus the H. I said Anna until I heard enough people call her Ana to realize that oh, she pronounces it how it looks... duh. So, sometimes I suck too.

The Ana I know pronounces it Anna. Maybe I just know weird people.

Kirra. Ki-RAH.
Not Kyra.
Not Keira.
Call me Keer-uh and I'll hate you just a little bit.

My ex boyfriend's name is Fabian, and for some reason, it is impossible to get some people to say 'Fay-be-en'. They just can't get their heads around it; they called him 'Fab-ee-un'.

I have another friend named Hallam. I'll introduce him to someone, and they give me strange looks, and then say "Hi Callum!".
No. Hallam. Like Callum, yes, but with a distinct 'haaaaa' sound in front.

My name is very similar to Corey, with elle tacked on. Its not Co-rel. Not COR-elly.

I pronounce Rhiannon like Rhee-AHN-nun. Its one of my favorites. =]

I still have problems with Saoirse. I want to say SHEER-sa, instead of SEER-sha.

I love Saoirse. I wish I could use it, but no one would ever say it properly (my family is mostly French). One friend pronounces it like SARS. :/

People mispronounce my name, although since I go by Tasha for the majority of the time, I'm not sure how that's possible. I get Tah-shia a lot. It's just...Tasha.

My boyfriend is Rylan. He gets Ry-land, Rillin, Ryan, Riley, and Dylan.

I have a hard time pronouncing Saoirse.

My name is Leah. I pronounce it Lee-uh. I get Lay-uh and Lee very, very frequently.

My father's name is Clem. Technically it's Clement, but he goes by Clem. He's gotten an insane amount of misspellings and mispronunciations over the years.

My name is Julianne. Now, WHY would you call that 'Julian, Julie, Juliannie, Jillian'? WHY?!

Julie + Anne = Julianne.

I get Julian the most. If I was a boy and my mom named me Julian but spelt it like Julianne, I would be seriously pissed, alright? I mean, how can you see 'anne' and not think FEMALE?!

Yeah ... :-/

That was my physics teacher in high school, one time. He was calling out attendance, and he was like 'Juliannie?' And I was like 'JULIANNE!' I was mortified lol. Granted, it was only once, so it was probably just a slip up (mostly he got me and my friend Justine's names mixed up 8-/) but still. Seriously? Juliannie? If my parents had named me that... oh, my God. Luckily, my parents have brains lol.

My name is K'lyssa. I don't think it's a name that's too difficult to spell or pronounce, but..apparently it is.

It's pronounced Cuh-liss-uh, but I usually get anything from KIE-liss-uh, Kay-liss-uh, Klissa to people who openly admit they have no idea how to say it.

..and spelling? Let's not even go there.

Date: 2008-10-31 04:23 pm (UTC)

Apostrophes always throw me off. If you told me your name was pronounced like Cuh-liss-uh, I'd probably spell it like Calissa or something, and when I read it the first time, I totally thought klie-ssa and then thought, wait, that can't be right! And it wasn't. :)

My name is misprounced all the freakin' damn time, and it is so annoying. And embarassing. It irks me to no end. My name is Jerika, and I think that it looks exactly the way it should be said: Erika with a J. No, every teacher I've ever had, it does not rhyme with paprika. Not Ja-ree-kah.

Sorry, venting, haha. But it is so annoying. I always ask my parents why they couldn't have named me after Jerrica Benton's sister, Kimber. Because people would know how to say that.

Kathryn. It's 2 syllables, people. kath-ryn. and that's a T, not an F! kat-ryn works too, kind of like the french of Katherine. and ryn is not pronounced like a river in europe!

I thought the 1st syllable of Rhiannon was hree?

How do you say Cieran, Cillian et al?

Cillian - Kill-ee-un
