[identity profile] ifancylust.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
i've been wanting to make this post for awhile now. basically it'll be members asking others: how is [name] pronounced?. it's not really a post asking how you prefer to pronounce a name..it's just that there are some names that i really do not know how to pronounce whatsoever and i figured that i'm not alone in this. i thought this could be helpful.

so i'll list mine and you list yours. hopefully we can help each other out. :]
how do you pronounce?
aoife?
rhiannon? (idk if it's REE-ann-inn or RYE-ann-inn)

also, if your name gets mispronounced often or if you know of names that are often mispronounced, post them here.

my example: my name is hana. it's not pronounced like hannah. it's more like HAH-nuh. it rhymes with nirvana. i get called hannah all the time. =/ that's not my name!! so, if you meet a 'hana', don't call her hannah! :]

Your name is our number one girls name currently and I'm sure people will pronounce it wrong:)

I can feel your pain in a way. My maiden is easily mispronounced and some people just don't get it. That makes me a little relculant to use the name (especially because we have a fairly common last name with a unique spelling), but I figure that she can change her name when she's older if it's too annoying. It also has a special meaning for us, we drove to the town of Hana in Maui (you should just go there everyone pronounces it right) the day before we got married.

We're planning on Rose. It was grandma's name and it's also like she'll be a rose from Hana.

UGH people do that to my daughter, too. Her name is Eva - the Polish Eva, so it's pronounced "Eh-vah." I can't tell you how many times I've told people "Her name is Eh-vah." only to have them say "Hi AY-VUH/EEE-VUH!" UGH UGH UGH.
