What does everyone think about the name Ireland? We seriously considered it for our last baby but ended up having a boy. I'm afraid it will be hard for some people to say, especially old relatives and kids. I hear lots of "Island's" in the future.

No. Having 'land' in a name doesn't seem right, plus only 'exotic' countries seem to make good names. Ireland is nice but not exotic. Maybe there's an Irish town that would make a good name? To use this list as an example:

http://www.iol.ie/~discover/towns.htm

Ardara sounds more like a name than Ireland does.

I would advise against using a name that was strictly a town name as well.

Naming your kid "Olympia" (WA), ok.
Naming your kid "Chicago" (IL), not so good.

If you like the way it sounds, I have heard people use Irelyn instead. I like both though.

I think this would be a better alternative to.

To me, since -lyn is such a common ending and is almost a throw-away, "Irelyn" really just emphasizes the presence of the word "ire" (http://www.yourdictionary.com/ahd/i/i0228700.html).

i like her idea- irelyn

but then you'll have people saying ireland instead haha

I really don't like it.
I mean, name your kid whatever you want, but would you really want to be called Ireland?
It just doesn't have depth, and it doesn't seem masculine or feminine at all.
Its just kinda.. hmph. Doesn't settle well.

So you can see where I stand for this name.

I'm not a fan of "place" names, generally speaking. This is no exception.

I like it as a middle name. Middle names are usually best-kept secrets except at graduations and class rosters. Mos tplaces asking for a middle name ask only for the inital...

So Ireland is pretty. I can't imagine hollering it from the front porch at all the neighorhood kids playing with little Ireland.

I don't like Ireland. If you want something to do with Ireland, why not Kerry? (or Kerri)

From: [identity profile] ericaamericka.livejournal.com
Kerry (or Kerri) is so common, though. It seems to me that she's leaning away from that in chosing a slightly less common name.

I think Ireland would be a beautiful name for a little girl :)
My little one is to be named Lyric.
Also LOVE your icon.My Little Ponies were my heros as a little girl and now grandma is searching auction sites like crazy to find more for my daughter.lol

Lyric is my absoulte favorite name... for a boy, though.
Yes, I'm odd.

I think "Irelyn" is cute and unique... I don't like the ending in "land", though. If it's the "Ire" part you like, what about "Briar"

Perhaps you could use Eire, the Gaelic name for Ireland, as a base for a name. Like Eira or Eireann (meaning Irish), both of which I think are beatiful

From: [identity profile] whisperthewords.livejournal.com
I like Eireann and Eira!

Having "land" in a name just feels weird, and Irelyn will just wind up getting confused for Ireland.

The only country name that I think is acceptable is Georgia...

And Irelyn is even worse. Sticking a -lyn at the end doesn't improve it. It looks (and is) made up. You can completely tell that someone liked Ireland but wanted to make it more... um... like a girl's name?

What about Isla? Iris? Irene? Beautiful names, uncommon and classy.

I don't care for it. Doesn't some celebrity have a daughter named this though? I'm thinking it's Kim Basinger, but I'm not sure on that.

I'm not opposed to place names in general, but tend to draw the line at ones that have the word "land" in them.

I like it sorta. I would only consider it if it had some sort of sentimental value or meaning to me and my husband. I know a little girl named Ricky Ireland. So I say go for it if you want to and you think its pretty! Its not as bad as many of the madeup names that people have been using these days :)

I like it, but at the same time, I don't. It's one of "those" names for me.

How would Ireland be difficult to pronounce? It's way more intuitive than Irelynn or any other derivatives. I suspect all old relatives had better geography lessons than kids even do today.

Would you have used it for its cultural connotations, or just for its sound? Because it might be important to keep in mind that "Ireland" is the Anglicized version of Éire, which in itself is a little offensive, don't you think? A previous poster mentioned Erin, which seems way more reasonable.

Sigh. I remember the good old days, when Ireland wasn't just some cultural commodity, and white people didn't feel the need to prove they were somehow tribal by idolizing the Celts. Where did those days go?

I think that anyone that can pronounce Ireland will be fine with it...
However, I'd name a boy Ireland rather than a girl.
