yes or no?
Jan. 30th, 2006 02:55 pmWhat does everyone think about the name Ireland? We seriously considered it for our last baby but ended up having a boy. I'm afraid it will be hard for some people to say, especially old relatives and kids. I hear lots of "Island's" in the future.

Date: 2006-01-31 06:08 am (UTC)I don't know, I just find it massively disrespectful to start naming kids after countries. There's an Irish woman on one of my naming boards who is at her wit's end with people naming their kids Ireland and Irelynn and a whole slew of misspelled Irish names. All things Irish have gotten so trendy, and where does that leave her? It's especially weird, given how badly the Irish were treated in America until about 1970. "Hey Ireland, is it okay if we abuse you for a millenia or so, then apologize but still rob you of all of your names and misspell them? Kthxbye!!" It's worse when people use Zaire and Havana, IMO, but it's bad enough with the Irish.
