What does everyone think about the name Ireland? We seriously considered it for our last baby but ended up having a boy. I'm afraid it will be hard for some people to say, especially old relatives and kids. I hear lots of "Island's" in the future.

No. Having 'land' in a name doesn't seem right, plus only 'exotic' countries seem to make good names. Ireland is nice but not exotic. Maybe there's an Irish town that would make a good name? To use this list as an example:

I would advise against using a name that was strictly a town name as well.

Naming your kid "Olympia" (WA), ok.
Naming your kid "Chicago" (IL), not so good.

I really don't like it.
I mean, name your kid whatever you want, but would you really want to be called Ireland?
It just doesn't have depth, and it doesn't seem masculine or feminine at all.
Its just kinda.. hmph. Doesn't settle well.

I like it as a middle name. Middle names are usually best-kept secrets except at graduations and class rosters. Mos tplaces asking for a middle name ask only for the inital...

So Ireland is pretty. I can't imagine hollering it from the front porch at all the neighorhood kids playing with little Ireland.

To me, since -lyn is such a common ending and is almost a throw-away, "Irelyn" really just emphasizes the presence of the word "ire" (http://www.yourdictionary.com/ahd/i/i0228700.html).

I met a little girl in my store last week named Boston Bean. No joke. She was in with her aunt and she said the parents really liked the name and figured when she got married she'd change it.

Perhaps you could use Eire, the Gaelic name for Ireland, as a base for a name. Like Eira or Eireann (meaning Irish), both of which I think are beatiful

The only country name that I think is acceptable is Georgia...

And Irelyn is even worse. Sticking a -lyn at the end doesn't improve it. It looks (and is) made up. You can completely tell that someone liked Ireland but wanted to make it more... um... like a girl's name?

What about Isla? Iris? Irene? Beautiful names, uncommon and classy.

Having "land" in a name just feels weird, and Irelyn will just wind up getting confused for Ireland.
