Hi guys,
I've updated the community info page. Nothing major, but I appreciate everyone's cooperation:

5. Please don't double post or break posts up into multiple entries throughout the day. We're a very active community, lets be courteous everyone's friends page.

Happy naming :)

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban welcomed a daughter -  Rose Kidman Urban.

**Edit - updated sources now confirm her name is actually Sunday Rose; I must admit that I prefer Wednesday.

Hi there! I am expecting a baby (sex unknown) in 5 weeks, and my husband and I are having a hard time agreeing on any girl names. I don't want to go with too 'classic' names--the reason being that my parents probably thought mine was classic, but I often get, "Ooh you have a pretty name; that's my mother's name!" from people who are sometimes decades older than me! :/ Nor do I like the trendy names that are popular these days, such as boy names for girls and 'creatively' spelled names.

Here are the only names that we even come close to agreeing on:

  • Brontë
  • Emmeline

Do you like one, both, or neither?

Edit: Thanks for all of the replies thus far. I'm probably more undecided than ever. :) I'm also rather surprised that Emmeline is popular...I don't even know any! I just read it in a Thomas Hardy book and thought it nice. I should probably get my nose out of old books to think of more names.

Edit #2: Is Brontë really that obvious? I think I assumed that most people would not get the reference. Maybe it's because I don't many readers--it's not that I think people are ignorant. Also, I like/love all the Brontë sisters, and it seems kind of romantic to have a name that refers to all of them. It's not vanity...I don't care what people think about me (i.e., via my kids' names), if that makes sense... I wouldn't choose just some random literary name--there has to be a reason for it.

do you automatically assume the pronounciation is line or lynn?
Also, list names that end in line.

Madeline
Emmeline

This is a continuation of my list of non-trendy names from yesterday, listing girls' names that have recently been declining in popularity - keep in mind that it's basically just an objective list, not my opinion of which names are out-of-style.  The first few names are still very popular, but most of these have gotten somewhat obscure.

PS - Sorry about your friend's lists everyone - I posted the boys' names before the community rule change and just wanted to finish this entry up.  I will keep future entries in the same post.

This morning I came across a girl called Spencyr Brielle.
Apparently, her mother thinks that adding a 'y' makes it a feminine name.

WDYT?

EDIT: I think it sounds really nice.. (eventhough I prefer Spencer for a boy) but the spelling REALLY bothers me.

Nicole Kidman and her husband, Keith Urban, have welcomed their first child together, a daughter named Sunday Rose, born Monday morning in Nashville, PEOPLE has confirmed.

http://community.livejournal.com/ohnotheydidnt/25385168.html

WDYT? i think it's an alright name. Rose is blah, but the first name could've been a worse noun-name.

I think I completely made this name up because I can't find it existing anywhere, even kabalarians.com!

But the name is Tylla.
For a girl, obviously.
It's pronounced tie-luh.

I really like it. When I thought of it, I was looking at the name Twyla.

So what do you all think?
[identity profile] moshimoshi-13.livejournal.com

Personally I could and have made up nicknames for some of these names, but overall I'd say it's pretty good.

What are some very clearly Jewish names that you like? Bonus points if you could reasonably use them outside of Orthodox communities or if they contain a "chet" (that grating "kh" sound).

This post was inspired by the name Yacob and the difficulty I'm having which conveying the pronunciation in writing. It's something like yaii-cobe. You say the letter "y", take off the "w"-sounding bit, and then "cobe" more or less rhymes with "cove".

Other names I like after the cut.

I'm also wondering how you feel about names that are often spelt and pronounced with a "j" that are spelt and pronounced with a "y". Do you think most people know that names like Yacob, Yonas, and even Yosef and Ysabel (well, that's usually an "i") are real names, or do they come across as made-up and meant to be pronounced with a "j" (or "i")?

I have to go change my last name tomorrow seeing as I got married over the weekend, and I my hubby and I are thinking about taking his mother's maiden name. He never knew his father.

So the options....

Cassandra Rae Gray

I like to write fiction, and one of my favourite parts of the writing process is naming my characters. These are the names I've chosen for some of the characters in the latest piece I'm working on. My taste in names leans towards traidional and Biblical, so nothing too "out there" here, even though the story is fantasy based.

Boys

Christian
James
David
Thomas
John

Girls

Alexandria
Lilith
Grace
Kerry
Jane
Mary
