Today I had an argument with my SO over "peculiar" baby names.
We were discussing the names that have been given to babies in a community we both are part of, and specifically we came across the name Sibilla (italian for Sybil).

He doesn't know, but it's one of the girl names I've been toying with recently, I don't have any particular attachment to it, but it certainly a name that holds potential to me. Instead, before I even said anything, he started on a rant about how the name is too "unique" and rare and that the kid will be constantly teased because of it. Of course, I replied everyone gets teased for whatever reason, and I'd rather teach my child how to stand out proudly for him/herself rather than bail and just name him/her something "normal" just so he/she peacefully goes with the flow. Not counting that kids in the next generations will already be accostumed to "weird" names to the point that maybe Maria one day will be frowned upon.

But he wouldn't have it. He was teased in school because of his last name, which has really nothing wrong to it, it's kind of common too, it just contains a word that translates into "snore" in italian (but also into "russian", for that matter).

So now I'm kind of bummed because I know with his kind of reasoning, if we were to name a child together, I wouldn't have a chance of naming my kid something that has personality, like a name that is rare or is a bit out there.

Did you guys ever had to give up names like this to accomodate your partner?
If so, what were those names?
Let's share the misery lol

I'm watching the movie "Zolushka" (Russian version of Cinderella), and Zolushka's evil stepsisters name's are
Dafna and Brunhilda.

WDYT?

Personally... I LOVE THEM! If I ever have kids, I'm going to name my two girls after them. I don't know, they're so different, they're awesome. And to be a little off topic, that's Brunhilda in my icon :]

ricki (short for rivka)
esther (esty)
mark

also, his cousin just had a baby and named her harriet mary. wdyt? i'm not a fan of harriet at all and i think the full name is just kind of..mature sounding. i would have gone for a more youthful middle name.

I was cleaning out a drawer and found an old notebook in which I used to write down the names of twins!
I don't have middle names, since I got most of these out of magazines and such, and some names are really short, but that's common here!

Twins! )

Also, if you have any questions about the pronunciation, I'd be happy to answer them! =)

So, I'm not sure how I didn't know this before, but I JUST learned my boyfriend's middle name a few days ago (and I've known him for two years....to be fair, we've only been dating for a month....)

But I still feel weird for not knowing it.

His name is Jesse Charles M_____

So me and my friend love the name Trevin. Her husband says absolutely no way will he ever name his son Trevin, but we're trying to change his mind. Anyway, kind of a different name, WDYT?

I work at the courthouse and see horrible names all the time. Today I saw one that I actually though was really pretty. It was a man, and his name was Alarick, pronounced "ah LAIR ick", though he had a bit of an accent and it sounded more like "a lyric". He looked and sounded Irish, but his last name was Gonzalez. Who knows, though. Do we like it or not?

I met a woman today, this was her name:

Schree

You get to guess how it is pronounced. It is a relatively common name.

 EDIT:

SInce you guys guessed so quickly I'll share this too. I had a coworker named Cherie. She introduced herself as Sherry. Does anyone else think this is odd? Why not just name her Sherry or Sherri?

What do you think of the name Melora?

We have our names set, obviously, but we heard this today and thought it sounded nice. It's the name of Melora Hardin, the woman who plays Jan on "The Office" and that makes it extremely appealing to me because I like the actress. Thoughts? Any background on the name?

I am in baby mode. I don't know why but I have been thinking of names lately even though I am not pregnant...yet. It is weird because I miscarried in October at 11 weeks and with that pregnancy I decided I didn't want to look at names until I knew boy/girl.

Anyway..here are some names I have been thinking about.

Evelynora (After my Grandmother Nora Evelyn who went by Evelyn. I am named after her as well my middle name being Evelyn. I would like to honor her but not exactly name my child after myself.)
Arlette In high school I always loved Sydney Arlette. I don't know about Sydney anymore but I think I still love Arlette.

I have a 2 year old son Adrian Orion.

okay. My cousin named her daught Jezzabella-Lina Brenda and it's hideous! Yes, I knwo it's hideous and we have all told her.

Regardless, she is being adopted within our family and we all like the name Lina.. spelt Leena... and we are looking for a longer name with the nickname being Leena...

Any help will be great... (and the Brenda will stay as that name is SO important to my cousin... we don't have the heart to change her whole name.)

Thanks!

a customer today, a lady in probably her mid-to-late 30s, was named Jenni. i was like, "oh, just Jenni?" she said, "in my field sometimes it's hard to be taken seriously with a nickname as a full name... plus you'd be amazed at how many people say what? your name is just Jenni, not Jenna or Jennifer or something? haha, don't ask me what my parents were thinking!"

also, my bank teller: Laszheneah... and, probably like most of you, i have NO idea how to even pronounce that haha.

I know it's been asked before, but it seems like it's been a while... But what are the names of your pets? I am mostly asking because I just got a new kitty.

They're all cats and this is from oldest to youngest...

My aunt has been investigating family tree stuff and came accross a boy who was called Willy (not William). If that wasn't funny enough, last name Lilley.

I've recently fallen in love with the name Katerina (nn Kate), to go with Claire Annabeth. I just can't decide on a middle name. I'd like it to be one syllable.  These are the ones I've come up with so far, but I'm open to suggestions of other one-syllable middle names that might go well with Katerina.[Poll #1129132]
