I just got married. (yay!)

And my last name is Hazzard now.

We are naming our first son John - who will be called Jack. I think it sounds ok. Jack Hazzard.

But we were agreed on naming the next child "Tom"

and now I'm falling in love with the name "Maxwell" and it's driving me nuts.

Would a child named Maxwell be automatically called "Max" by his peers?

Max Hazzard would just be mean, I think.

Why not just name him Jack, since that is what you will call him?

Plus, I am confused about how Jack is derived from John.

I've heard Jack is a nickname for John....I don't know why though

It is a very old construction, from the days when -kin was used as a diminutive form.

Apparently if you were living in the middle ages and your name was John, you might be referred to affectionately as Jankin. Over time, Jankin was altered to Jackin. From there, Jackin was shortened to Jack!

A friend of mine's nephew is named John but called Jack. Apparently it is a nickname for John, but why, I have no idea. I agree with you, I'd just name him Jack.

The name would almost definitely be shortened to Max by everyone he meets. Even if he specifically asked to be called Maxwell (which I doubt any kid would do -- most would prefer Max), most people would assume he was Max.

I don't see the problem with the name. I actually think it sounds kinda cool.

I think he'll almost certainly be called Max.
I have a cousin named Joshua. His mom hates the name Josh, so she refuses to let us call him that, but people still do it because people are, in general, rather lazy and would prefer to say a one syllable name. Personally, I can't call people by their given name. It's just my thing. I call him Josue, since he's Mexican, and it's kinda stuck with his mom.

He'll definitely be Max.

That said, Max Hazzard is awesome. I see why you are reluctant, but if I was a guy and I was named Max Hazzard, I would think it was the coolest name ever :)

(And profesionally he would be Maxwell, so I don't think there'd be a problem with someone looking at his resume and subconsciously deciding he was bad news ;) )

Hazzard is a pretty cool last name to work with!
I actually love the NN "Max" and happen to think that "Max Hazzard" sounds pretty awesome.

I think Max is inevitable. Even as I was reading your post, before I got to the Max question I thought to myself.. "Maxwell.. Max Hazzard.." I mean, I guess you could really *try to stop people.. but I don't think there's too much wrong with Max Hazzard. It sounds kinda cool. =D

I love the name Maxwell. It is my son's name.:D

I have noticed that even when I write Maxwell on my son's name-tag at gymboree people call him Max a lot. Since I call him Max myself at times, I don't have a problem with it. It is just something I have noticed, but it is something to keep in mind if you can't stand, "Max".

I think a lot of people just shorten names without thinking about it. I have been guilty of this myself!

Yup, he'd definitely be called Max. Personally, Max Hazzard sounds like someone famous to me! Maybe a racecar driver or an action movie actor or something! However, even if it sounds okay to me, if you can't stand it then DEFFINITELY don't name him that cuz chances are that is what almost everyone will call him since it's such an obvious nickname.

Also, I don't like it when people call John's Jack. It sounds like the one name is not good enough since it's the same number of syllables and the same number of letters. It seems like it would just confusing for kids to understand that too. Not necessarily HIM, but all his friends and teachers and stuff. He'd always be called John by his teachers and everyone until he corrected them. He'd have to correct every person he met! Anyways, that's just my opinion.

Just whatever you do don't name one of your boys Duke! LOL

We have a Maxwell where I work and he goes by Maxwell, though we do sometimes call him Max.

More importantly, will his peers come up with "Maxie pad!" as quickly as we did?
