I just got married. (yay!)

And my last name is Hazzard now.

We are naming our first son John - who will be called Jack. I think it sounds ok. Jack Hazzard.

But we were agreed on naming the next child "Tom"

and now I'm falling in love with the name "Maxwell" and it's driving me nuts.

Would a child named Maxwell be automatically called "Max" by his peers?

Max Hazzard would just be mean, I think.

It is a very old construction, from the days when -kin was used as a diminutive form.

Apparently if you were living in the middle ages and your name was John, you might be referred to affectionately as Jankin. Over time, Jankin was altered to Jackin. From there, Jackin was shortened to Jack!
