..and it's somewhat of a debate between fiance and I...

We're planning on naming our first son Calvin. He wants to use the nickname "Cal" and I'd prefer "Vinnie" as "Cal" just reminds me of a dry heave.

So...if you were naming your son Calvin, which nickname would you use?

Cal. To me, Vinnie sounds like a mafioso, while Cal sounds like a Harvard Law student.

I like the name Calvin, and the Calvin & Hobbes comics.

I like Vinnie a lot as a nn, though I think some people would still end up using Cal because it's so obvious. And since I do like both, I'd probably use Vinnie but hope that somewhere along the line he has both nicknames.

That's exactly where Stacey (my fiance) got the name. From the comic strip. It was a hard sell for me for a long time, but one day it just clicked and I love it.

I think the fact that Vinnie is such a hard-ass nickname (pardon my language) is why I like it so much.

I hadn't thought about the Harvard Law student angle....I was only imagining "backwoods hick".....but, I think I could handle Cal better if I thought "Harvard" instead of "redneck"....thanks!! :)

I suppose there is no reason we couldn't use both nicknames. I'd just use Vinnie and encourage my friends/family to call him Vinnie. LOL

I prefer Vinnie, but I like Cal. If you can't agree on one, just use both names. That happened with both me and my brother. Mom insisted on calling us Melissa and Nathan, our grandparents insisted on calling us Lissie and Nate, and Daddy insisted on calling us Squirell and Bub. :-D (I was squirell, yay)

I'd just use Calvin. I think it's short enough to not need a nickname. Maybe "Cal" if I were having a casual moment, but for the most part, he'd be Calvin.

i also agree on just calvin. vinnie always makes me think of a sleezy guy in a greasy wife beater sporting a thick gold chain and dark back hair. and cal... eh, it just seems kind of weak. *shrug* just my 2 cents! i think calvin is a great name, though.

A nickname really isn't necessary IMO, but Cal isn't bad at all. To me Vinnie is a nickname only for Vincent. So I would say Cal, definitely, if you are set on having a nickname.
