I've been lurking for a while but I'm trying to procrastinate so I thought I'd post.

When I hav a child I plan on naming it either Anne or John. Maybe William. If I had another girl she'd be Elizabeth.

I tell people this and they look at me like I'm crazy and then tell me the kid will hate me for giving it such a "horrible" name.

What gives? If I had to chose between being Rylee Sestina or Anne, I think I'd thank my mother every day for the latter.

I like my name: Katherine. Strong and traditional. I like to see how many other people in history have my name, spelled MY way. (Katherine Howard, 6th wife of Henry VII, for example.)

And if I have a girl I'm naming her Judith. And the rest of the world can just effing DEAL with it.

Yay, we have the same name!

I used to be torn on the C/K issue, wondering if my loving the K didn't make me some sort of trendy version...but really, I figure they've been peacefully coexisting for so long that it doesn't EFFING matter.

Besides, it originates from the greek word for "pure", and when greek translates into Roman letters, K and C are pretty much interchangable. See: Cassandra/Kassandra, Calypso/Kalypso. So really, they're equally acceptable from an etymological/academic perspective.

Also, I meant to type VIII, but i just...stopped one I short. Stupid numerals!

But yeah, Katherine of Aragon too! (But hey, you get Catherine Parr...and she got executed, so that basically rocks.)

when I was in London Parliament and Tower of London, everywhere I would turn they spelled those Katherine wives differently. The Docks of St. Katharine are with an A!

But I am Katharine with an A! I love my name. and I think my spelling is the most unusual. it always trips people up. But Katharine is SO strong. I wanted to name a daughter after me, and call her Kate. but we are making the first boy a jr, so we can have Katharine Jr AND Andrew Jr. that would be weird!

Word.

I think Mary and Jane are scandalously underused names, myself.
Anne is gorgeous.

If I were named Maddyson, or Rylee, I would change my name to Anne the day I turned 18 ;)

I think that your names are beautiful! Stick to the classics....they'll always be in style. :)

Those names have lasted for so many centuries because strong people carried them along.

I'm glad there are people out there still naming their kids those names.

I"m somewhere in the middle. I consider John, William, Anne, Elizabeth, etc. to be at the far far end of the spectrum as Dakhota or Aspyn...which I also stay away from.

They are lovely names but I wouldn't use them for my children a bit too plain for my taste.

When I first skimmed your post, I thought you were going to use Rylee Sestina. O.o Thank goodness I read it through!
I'm with you. My name (Bethany Ruth) is traditional, but I like it. It's a good adult name, and I could have had a nn if I wanted one (although I never did, there are too many Beths in the world).

Thank you. My list of names for my future children? Peter, Alexander, Catherine, and Elizabeth. (Guess the common theme and get a cookie!)

I feel sad for my future children, as I forsee many a long afternoon trying to figure out how to spell their classmates' names for Valentine's Day cards and the like.

Monarchs/royalty ... I'm thinking Russian
Peter the Great
Tsar Alexander (there were three)
Catherine the Great
Not sure when Elizabeth was, but am sure there was one.

Do I get a cookie? :)

Yeah it's going to be tragic. Especially for mine with their crazy onomast mother demanding to know and ranting about it.

Great rules, yep. Russian was totally unintended, the Alexander I was going with was Alexander the Great (who I totally had a history-crush on long before the Colin Farrel movie, even if he is hot). Maybe I should find a fourth '...the Great' name to go with, instead of Elizabeth. To add to the theme.

Yes! You get an Internet cookie! Congrats!

Hurrah :)
I've studied the Russian aristocracy for a long time, so that was my immediate thought.
History-crushes are cool, sure I've had a couple.

Those are very nice names. Not my style at all, but can definetly see the appeal.
My given first name was originally a nn for Elizabeth but now stands alone. Would so much rather have been named Elizabeth*. It has such an enduring appeal (rather than a once trendy now dated variant) and great nickname potential.

People are going nuts trying to be 'creative' and want their kids name to be unusual amongst their peers. Fair enough, I want that too. Just find it so ironic that I know about six Aidens & Haydens that are under five, but can't recall my brother Richard having a classmate with the same name (he's 16).

I tend to prefer unusual names, but by that I mean either properly obscure or long neglected classics. Trendy names just get blah and outdated so fast. Bizzare spellings are a huge peeve too.

*Probably prefer the Hebrew version, but am not remotley Jewish so shall just admire from afar.

My cousin swore she'd name a daughter Anne Elizabeth. She has three boys and I think she's done. Anyway, I think they're pretty names. I'm not nuts about John (same cousin has used John twice: Kevin John and John Walter, called Jack. And the last one is Patrick Michael) but William is very nice.

I really don't care for the crazy spellings people like these days. Elizabeth is a perfectly nice name, or Elisabeth if you want it to be a little different maybe, but, like, Allysabith? No. Just...no.

I much prefer the classic names! If it was in a Shakespears play, then a Jane Austen book, and then in a 20th century work.. its a good name!

Not to my taste, a little too plain. I knew a siblings called Mary & Richard & i always found it strange that their names sounded so old fashioned.
But when your kids go to school there wont be another Anne/John/William in sight, i'm sure. Too filled up with the parents trying to be original with their Mikenziiiieees & Mikaylers & whatever else lol.
However i like the longer version of Anne and John...Anna & Jonathan.

I honestly agree. People are giving their children names like Mikayla, Kaitlyn, Dylin, etc so I think naming your child Anne would actually give her less of a common name. I've always been partial to John, it's a very pleasant sounding name.

Oh, if I have a son he will be named John Michael. We're going more modern if it's a girl... but I still love traditional names.

Don't let people get you down!

I suspect people thinking you crazy and that you'll be hated for such awful names is something of an exaggeration.

That said, these are traditional, solid, widely accepted names that have served plenty of people well, but they are far too vanilla for my taste. When something has been overused for centuries, I'm pretty much ready for something a little less common.

Fortunately there's plenty of middle ground between those and a funked up trendy invention.

Classic names rock my socks. John, William, Anne, and Elizabeth are four of my favorites. They go really well together, too.

I definitely agree with you. And if they really hated their name that much, each of those names has a variety of wonderful nicknames that they could go by. (Well, Anne doesn't have much else than Annie, but the rest have a lot.)

My kids will all have classic names, too. Woot! (Including John--my favorite =) )
