I know my boy names are effeminate.  I like that.

I'm been a name nerd for years.  Telling me you don't like them won't change my mind, but I would be interested in hearing your thoughts.  Be as kind or harsh as you wish.  They're just opinions; you can't offend me.

These names are not for actual children.  If anything, these names are for novel characters or simply for me to enjoy in theory.

Favourites: (no order)
Boys:
Fionán / Finley (Fionán is pronounced fyun-AWN.)
Kieran
Miles / Milo
Finch
Shealyn "Shea"
Murray
Cyril (pronounced SEER-el)
Lennox
Vyvyan -I'm an Oscar Wilde fan. Can't help myself.  Also, Vivian was first a boy name.
Darcy
Runner Up: Brencis

(Should I replace Miles / Milo for Monday?  I can't decide.)

Girls:
Eliza
Estella
Finja (pronounced: FIN-yah)
Georgiana
Mabel
Juliet
Viviana
Magda
Siân (pronounced: Sharn)

While I don't have children yet I know if I have a girl her name will be Ava Julia and my son will be Julian Lorenzo. Ava is for a beautiful little girl lost at three years old, look her up on the Internet Ava Rosemeyer, Julia is my grandmother's name and Lorenzo is my grandfather's last name. A couple of other names that I like are for girls: Gia, Elena, Grace, Abigail, Alexandra, Savannah and Cassandra; for boys: Lucas, Travis, Jacob, Mason, Luca, James, Spencer, Noah and Jonah.

I don't have kids yet, but we are beginning to try to have kids... :-)
We have kind of been thinking of names...
So far, I like the name AMBER for a girl.  I haven't heard a boys name that I reallllyyyy like yet.  I want something unique, but cute. lol.. it is hard.  My cousin named her little boy LELAND and I thought that was different and cute.. But I can't use that now.. haha.. Stilllll thinkinggggg.... hmmmm...

My husband and I have decided to have another child, in about 3-4 years. I have a girl now (Milo-Adrienne) It took me a really long time to find any girl names I really liked..which is why I went with Milo. I have some boys names picked out already:

-Jack
-Hunter
-Elwood
-Oliver

But if we have a girl..I've got nothing! I want something unique..but not weird. I like Teegan..and Harper, and at one point I thought Hunter for a girl too, but thats all I've got.

Suggestions? nothing starting with a K..our last name starts with a K.

What are some names for boys and girls that a gamer (D&D, Final Fantasy-those kinds of games) would like but a non-gamer could appreciate as well? My friend's husband keeps turning down all of her picks so they need some help! It would probably be easier to find something that *he* likes because he's more picky.
From her first marriage, she has two girls-Julia and Ava. Current marriage, they have a girl named Zara who passed away and a boy named Gabriel nn Gabe.

Some names I've seen on claims at work lately:
Hugheena
Coco-Joanne
Kebbie - male (I didn't think this was a real name, but I looked it up and it's a Scottish word for walking stick/cane, or the family was just from Kebbie in Sierra Leone, or they are a British soccer fan)
Wileen
Zuber
Juel
Ottilie (I've seen Otilla before)
Hogan
Teresita (I thought it was cute but probably doesn't age well...)
Dileta (makes me think dilettante, or dilate)
Ornella
Clairandrée
Aminael
Mariannie
Haydee

Hi! I saw this comm in the spotlight and I got so excited! I've always loved names and I've kept a name list since I was in elementary school.  Like many other people (I've discovered!) I started out by creating characters but over the past few years I've realized that I just love researching names.  I tend to lean towards either very traditional names, or unusual/rare names, and I don't like very many fad names.  I'll admit I do love most of the -aden names that are so popular these days, but I try to keep them off my lists because they're becoming so common.

I'm nineteen-- single and not planning on having kids anytime soon.  Someday I'd like to have four kids, so I've been keeping a list of my top four boys names and top four girls names, so I'm prepared no matter what. :)  For some reason, I like boys' names A LOT more than girls, and my girl list stays static for a long time, whereas my boy list changes every few months it seems.

Here are my current lists:

Boys:
Robert Christian (nn Robbie) Robert is for my dad
James Cohen (nn Jay)
August Holden
Rhys Alexander

Girls:
Madeleine Abbigael (pronounced Madeline not Madelyn; different spelling of Abigail)
Sarah November
Olivia Aven Faith
Sophia Grace (nn Sophie)

Other Favorites:
Boys: Nolan, Greyson, Orion, Frey, Arthur, Soren, Hector, Neil, Jeremy (nn Remy), William (nn Liam)
Girls: Leah, Cadence (after a friend), Shiloh, Norah, Valecia (my middle name), Wendy, Thalia (THAY-leah, or THAYL-ee-uh)

I'd love to hear any thoughts-- comments or criticism, whatever! I love this comm! :D

With the surge in activity post-Spotlight and my brand-new pregnancy (29 days!), I am excited to revive the name combination game.

Here's how it works: you provide in a comment a list of your intended first names, followed by a list of your intended middles. (One comment for each gender). Then other members combine these names into their favorite suggestions.

For example, you'd say:

Firsts:
Abby
Beth
Cate
Dana

Middles:
Eve
Fran
Gretel
Heidi

And in response, other members will say
"Abby Fran
Beth Eve
Cate Gretel
Cate Heidi
I hate the name Dana, have you thought of using the spelling Kate..." etc.

It's a great way to get a fresh look at your lists and it really brings a lot of fantastic suggestions together in one super-post.

Boy names and girl names in separate comments keeps things a little neater. Please consolidate all your names into just one comment for girls and one for boys. If this turns into a valuable thing I'll revive it again in a month or two.

Remember, to make this work you need to provide suggestions to people in addition to posting your own. If this gets long, focus your love on the comments with fewer replies.

Have fun and happy combining!

I've had the flu and been on an archive binge of this site all day. I'm seeing a lot of uniquely spelled names and as someone who works in child care I've run across quite a few interesting names as well. My question is, does anyone have or know of a name that always gets said or spelled wrong even though it's an actual name.

My name given name is Laurel but I am constantly being called Laura or Lauren or if the person does know my name they mangle it's spelling horribly: Lorelle, Lorel, Lorrelle. Most recently my supervisor at work has everyone confused by actually pronouncing the name itself wrong: Lurr-elle instead of Lor-rul. It's driving me mad and even though she knows she's saying it wrong she's persistent in this incorrect pronunciation. I've even had to reintroduce myself to other staff members because they're confused about the pronunciation.

And a student who is doing a placement at the centre is apparently called Aoife, I've yet to meet her but everyone calls her Eh-Oh-Fe even though I'm pretty sure the original name is Ee-Fa (like Eva but with an F). I'm not quite sure what to do when I meet her because I spotted her daughter's name on a sign in sheet in the office and I got excited about how it was one of my favourite names Saoirse (Seer-sha to the best of my knowledge) but the girl with me was confused about why I said it like that and told me it was pronounced Sar-oh-see.

I'm not sure if she's actually pronounces her name incorrectly or if this is another case of my supervisor getting everyone confused and it being justified by being a name that's not English. Any thoughts?
