I remember reading an article about more people using the surnames of Hollywood icons as given names, and it was around when Nicole Ritchie had her baby Harlow [like Jean Harlow]. Well, I started thinking about it more and realized I loved the surname of one of my favorite actresses:

Dietrich [Marlene Dietrich; pn DEE trik]

WDYT?

Not sure how it works as a first name, but I would consider it for a middle name.

With all the talk of using last names of your favorite celebrities for your kids, what are some of your favorite actors and actresses, singers' etc last names that could work for first names?

For me, the only actresses (and I have no actors) that I would name my kids after are Kate Walsh, Judith Light and Marcia Cross.  I don't think they'd necessarily make a good first name.  For singers I could use last names after Josh Groban, Michael Buble, George Strait, Elton John and so forth.  I actually like the first name Drake because of Drake Bell (whose music I embarrassingly like).  I do plan on using the last name Manning after a friend / "teacher" though.

So I've been doing genealogy this weekend and I came across the following names in my family tree, from the late 1700s. They lived in Massachusetts.

Mother: Silence (!)
Father: Amos

Children:

Charles
Enoch
Jephtha (M)
Achsah (M)
Polly
Adah
Zillah (F)
and Permilla (F)

Silence's sister was named Submit

And in other news, what do you think of the name Thomas? What comes into your mind when you think of it? I was watching 1776 today and I just thought, wow, Tom is a really cute name for a boy. Sort of like Sam--it just sounds like a nice person.

There was this special on Discovery Health today about a set of quintuplets born last year. There names are:

Irelyn Kadyn (girl)
Drayden Karter (boy)
Layne Mykel (boy)
Kieran Skye (girl)
Landyn Konner (boy)

I personally think they're quite awful... Landyn wouldn't be bad if it was spelled Landon... I commented to my roommate that I thought they were terrible and she thought I was being mean and the parents were just trying to be unique with the spellings. wdyt?
