[identity profile] cxtxc.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I remember reading an article about more people using the surnames of Hollywood icons as given names, and it was around when Nicole Ritchie had her baby Harlow [like Jean Harlow]. Well, I started thinking about it more and realized I loved the surname of one of my favorite actresses:

Dietrich [Marlene Dietrich; pn DEE trik]

WDYT?

Not sure how it works as a first name, but I would consider it for a middle name.

I'm all for this kind of things!
Maybe the thing with Dietrich specifically is that it sounds too masculine for a girl.. but then I'm not sure you'd want to give a boy a name from a lady.

Same with Harlow, though!
Although of course when I hear Harlow, all I can think is Rhesus monkeys

i also like Dietrich. though it is a little harsh as a first name, but a middle name it wouldn't be too bad.

speaking of old hollywood stars, i also like the surnames Monroe, Gable, Bogart & Taylor as first/middle names.

It is a German first name (http://www.behindthename.com/name/dietrich) already!

For a boy, it would be great. For a girl, it would be absolutely, 100% horrendous. In fact, I think it IS a boy's name, isn't it?

Hmmm. She says Dee-trikh with a very soft Kh sound, which is what I think the OP (and I) were trying to convey but it's hard to phonetically write out that sound in an English way.

like the ch in channel...

thats the only english word I can think of (right now...and I should be in bed already ;) )

I try to remember a word with a ch-sound ^^

but maybe (or probably) we mean the same *lol*

but the nordicnames-site is a good way to know the names...

yeah the american pronunciation is pretty watered down to just the K sound at the end of the name. the Ch in Channel is pronounced differently from the German Ch. Dietrich would have the same sound at the end as Bach. and anyway a lot of German names that have become stand-alone names in English have, like I said, pretty watered-down, Americanized pronunciations. The recording on that site even pronounced our future daughter's first name much more truly Germanic than how we'll be saying it :)

Maybe a bit like the flowing of the K in the name Ken?

Edited to reflect your edit...
Ken is still a hard K. I think what you're going for is a soft Ch sound that is like a hard H sound. Like Bach, like I said above.

that's because americans can't say it right. it's the german "ch" that's impossible for 99% of people here.

Dietrich does seem too masculine to me for a girl's first name, but I can see it as a middle name or a boy's name.
