[Poll #789901]

I recently saw the movie Evita, and I've absolutely fallen in love with the name Eva. My only issue with it is that I have a feeling that most people will pronounce it the Anglicized way, like Eve with an a at the end, rather than the Spanish way, kind of like Ava. To keep the pronunciation that I want, I'm thinking that I should just use Ava, which is already on my list, though I do like Eva.

As a standard disclaimer, children are a long, long way off for me. I'm just really into names (and Evita).

Eva is not pronounced like Ava in Spanish.

it is pronounced with an E likes in "yes".

Agreed, the Spanish is somewhere in between option 2 and option 3. Ava has a much longer A sound.

That's my name :)

I usually introduce myself as Eva, pronounced Ee-va, to people I won't personally deal with much - it's easier for people to say and spell, and I don't have to explain anything. I really don't mind, especially if it's someone like, say, the dentist or if I'm ordering something on the phone.

My friends and family pronounce it like non-rhotic Ever, which is the original Polish pronounciation and which I like. Others say it like Ava, which is nice too. Either is fine with me.

This is a bit of a pain when people ask how my name is "really" pronounced, and sometimes I'm not sure how I should pronounce my own name... LOL!

I say if you want it pronounced like Ava, use Ava or your kid will be faced with this annoyance. It's a MINOR annoyance, but sometimes I wish I'd just stuck with one straightforward pronunciation ;)

If you want it pronounced like Ava, I would just spell it that way. It's quite beautiful looking spelled that way.

The way I pronounce it isn't really on there, so I said like Ava. But I say "Eh-va" with a little hint of A in the Eh. LOL.

I like that way and Ee-va.

I say eh-vah, but I grew up on the border of Mexico so the only Evas I know were Eh-vahs.

I have an Ee-Vee and she has one friend who's mother calls her eh-vee and it bugs me, but I've stopped saying anything about it.

If you want to prn it Ava, you need to spell it Ava. I think anybody named Eva, prn Ava, would be constantly correcting people.

The vast majority of people think Eva is prn Ee-vuh and Ava is prn Ay-vuh. Ava is an extremely popular name and I think she'd be correcting more than some people once.

Ava is #1 on my list, and would def. save you the prn troubles you are worried about!

Since you didn't have my choice, I chose the first one.

I pronounce it however it is supposed to be pronounced - I've seen people who spell ave-a as E-V-A and I've seen people who spell eve-a E-V-A. My default, however, is EVE-UH.

I tend to want to say, and prefer AY-va. But I accept that most people say it EE-va. Regardless, it's not a name I care much for, so it doesn't matter than much to me. Whatever people want I guess.

I've never heard it like said similar to ever.

Thing is, I pronouce it all three ways because I've known an "Eeva", an "Eh-va" and an "Ava", all spelled Eva. So, whichever the person tells me it is.

I would say Eve-ah, but I'm not sure how you would say Ava? I would say Ah-vah, whereas would you say Ay-vah in the states?

On the opposite, I've never known anyone with the name spelled Eva who pronounced it "ay-vuh"

You know, I've never actually seen Eva Braun's name in print before. Odd, huh?

My name is Eva. I pronounce it Eve-uh. I have people pronounce it either way, Ay-vuh or Eve-uh, it's about an even split. It gets kind of annoying to a point, because the way I see it, if you (generic you) want it pronounced Ay-vuh, then you should use Ava. But I guess I'm kind of biased on that point -- to me, Eva is Eve-uh and Ava is Ay-vuh.

I've had people OCCASSIONALLY pronounce it Ehh-vuh, but I just don't get that one.

(I'm kinda late on this, but I feel obliged to chime in since it's, you know, my name).

And, by the by, I really like my name and sometimes I want to retroactively high-five my parents for giving it to me.
