I am annoyed at the movie industry.
Since about a year and a half ago, my SO and I decided that we'd name the next boy we had (if we had one) Tristan. I've been in love with the name since I was a teenager after reading the fable, Tristan and Isolde. Now I fear this new movie (which, incidentally, I can't WAIT to see) will make the name unbearably popular. Growing up as 1 of a zillion Jennifer's in the 80's has turned me off completely to anything extremely popular. I don't want to name my child that and it become the new "Aiden". So it leads me to this question, should I automatically dismiss it if it does become insanely popular? Should popularity matter quite so much when choosing a name? Ideally I won't have to worry about this when it comes time to think about it (we're not even trying yet, probably late this year,) but I was just wondering about it while trying to avoid working.
Opinions?

Regarding Tristan and the movie industry, that does suck. I've had that happen before, to names I've loved - suddenly they get popular, yet I've loved them since way before they surged. It really irks me.
It's a tough thing to do, but I always try to find another name to love.

my little sister is also named Jennifer so she has to deal with it just as much as I do, though born in the late 80's so it wasn't as bad for her.though it is now that she's older and slowly breaking out into the real world she's realizing what I grew up talking/complaining about when i would walk into homeroom in school and there be 6 of us.lol

an ex-friend of ours suggested it because of our love of music and we both loved it from the start :) Thankfully never had to go over girl names cuz I can just imagine how that woulda been.We never did agree on a boys name, hehe,i took it upon myself to decide he would be named after a very good friend of mine who passed away a couple years ago and daddy hates it.says no child of his would be named after someone for that reason-too bad...by some miracle we ever get back together and have another child and its a boy he will be named after my friend. :)

Personally, I probably would over look a name if it became insanely popular, even if it had been one of my favourites for years. (and im with you on the fact that i'm praying my faves dont reach the top 20 anytime soon)
I doubt Tristan will go up in popularity by a huge amount.. i mean it probably will by quite a lot but thats only because it isnt hugely popular at the moment. The thing with baby names... you never can tell what other soon-to-be parents have their heart set on either.

It's tricky when you really like a name, but you know your kid will wind up being called "name last initial" for their whole school aged life.

I was one of many Claires in high school, and although I didn't like always turning around and finding out that they were talking to a different Claire, it was only a mild annoyance - it's not like I was seething with a deep inner rage that has caused me permanent emotional scarring. The inconvenience of sharing a name was very slight, in the grand scheme of things...
(PS - I also turn around when people say: yeah, there, chair, where, etc, which is even more annoying)

I mean, I personally wouldn't go with Tristan, because I know someone with that name and I'm....not a fan, let's say. But if you love the name, go for it.
