I am annoyed at the movie industry.

Since about a year and a half ago, my SO and I decided that we'd name the next boy we had (if we had one) Tristan. I've been in love with the name since I was a teenager after reading the fable, Tristan and Isolde. Now I fear this new movie (which, incidentally, I can't WAIT to see) will make the name unbearably popular. Growing up as 1 of a zillion Jennifer's in the 80's has turned me off completely to anything extremely popular. I don't want to name my child that and it become the new "Aiden". So it leads me to this question, should I automatically dismiss it if it does become insanely popular? Should popularity matter quite so much when choosing a name? Ideally I won't have to worry about this when it comes time to think about it (we're not even trying yet, probably late this year,) but I was just wondering about it while trying to avoid working.

Opinions?

There were already a zillion Jennifer's way before the 80's. I'm a 70's Jennifer, born in the 60's, and it was just as big a problem before you hit the scene. The 80's just made it worse. I love my name, but it is the most popular name on the planet. I know all too well.

Regarding Tristan and the movie industry, that does suck. I've had that happen before, to names I've loved - suddenly they get popular, yet I've loved them since way before they surged. It really irks me.

It's a tough thing to do, but I always try to find another name to love.

i say that if you've liked the name stick with it no matter how popular it may get due to this movie.i've always really liked the name myself, but after seeing Legends of the Fall w/ Brat Pitt as a teenager. There was a time after that movie the name up'd in popularity but then died down again after all the hipe over the movie was done so I'm sure the same will happen again w/ this movie.

ugh and I hear ya w/ not wanting to give your child such a popular name at the same time.there were just as many Melissa's born in the 80's so I went waaay out w/ Lyric for our daughter due in June.
my little sister is also named Jennifer so she has to deal with it just as much as I do, though born in the late 80's so it wasn't as bad for her.though it is now that she's older and slowly breaking out into the real world she's realizing what I grew up talking/complaining about when i would walk into homeroom in school and there be 6 of us.lol

ahh i love love love love Lyric. It's so unique, but not to weird. And a basic spelling so people won't be asking her how to spell it all the time. Such a cute name! It was on my top list for a lonnngg time.

thank u.
an ex-friend of ours suggested it because of our love of music and we both loved it from the start :) Thankfully never had to go over girl names cuz I can just imagine how that woulda been.We never did agree on a boys name, hehe,i took it upon myself to decide he would be named after a very good friend of mine who passed away a couple years ago and daddy hates it.says no child of his would be named after someone for that reason-too bad...by some miracle we ever get back together and have another child and its a boy he will be named after my friend. :)

I am blaming Friends for making the name Emma popular. I picked it out ages ago for bookworm nerdy reasons. DH and I agreed on it long ago. dammit! Um, but I am going to use it anyway :) Kid can just suck it up, little brat!! But really, there are tons more different names used these days, than when we were born. Whereas there were 8 Lisas, Jennifers and Melissas, there's really only two Emma's and lots more ****lyn's. at least, this is what keeps me going :)

Tristan is my top pick if we have another boy too, if hubby will go for it, but I'm with you...if it gets real popular after this movie then I probably won't use it. I don't like overly popular names.

Great name...
Personally, I probably would over look a name if it became insanely popular, even if it had been one of my favourites for years. (and im with you on the fact that i'm praying my faves dont reach the top 20 anytime soon)
I doubt Tristan will go up in popularity by a huge amount.. i mean it probably will by quite a lot but thats only because it isnt hugely popular at the moment. The thing with baby names... you never can tell what other soon-to-be parents have their heart set on either.

I am the same way. I have names on my lists that are still on there even thought they have become popluar.....will I pick them....probably not. Why? Because they have become so common or popular. My sisters name is Katherine and she literally had to narrow her name down from Katherine to Kathy to Katy to just Kat....becuase there were so many girls in choir whos names were the same. Several other of the girls just went by their last names to make it easier. It's crazy. I have two kids....Draven and Isis...off the wall names but names that we won't have to worry about later on. So would I pick a name that I love even if it has become popular....I don't think so.

Well, I don't know. Can you imagine your son having another name? Tristan is a great name, but the thing about names being insanely popular is that usually if you hear them all the time they lose their beauty - it's like, if you've ever repeated a word so much that it doesn't seem real any more, that sort of thing.

I doubt many people will jump on the Tristan bandwagon. I think it's a great name, btw.

i think it's a fabulous name, but i don't see it becoming hugely popular. I like unique names and so, i wouldn't pick something insanely popular.

on a side note - that movie was incredibly AMAZING!!!

my son is named Tristan. I fear it becoming popular too but at least he'll be a little older than all the other Tristans LOL

It is becoming a lot more popular, but I don't think it'll wind up in the top 10 boys names, which I think are the real ones to avoid.

It's tricky when you really like a name, but you know your kid will wind up being called "name last initial" for their whole school aged life.

I know what you mean. I HATE when that happens... when the name you've loved FOREVER suddenly becomes trendy. GRRR I hate hate hate that.

It depends on the kid's personality how they cope with a popular name, but I think that unless a name is something easy to tease, or so obscure/bizarre that people have trouble remembering it, that any name should be fine.

I was one of many Claires in high school, and although I didn't like always turning around and finding out that they were talking to a different Claire, it was only a mild annoyance - it's not like I was seething with a deep inner rage that has caused me permanent emotional scarring. The inconvenience of sharing a name was very slight, in the grand scheme of things...

(PS - I also turn around when people say: yeah, there, chair, where, etc, which is even more annoying)

I don't think it's really going to become that popular. I mean, I know they're trying to make the movie seem really trendy by using Evanescence in the trailer, but I don't think Tristan is going to be hugely popular all of a sudden.

I mean, I personally wouldn't go with Tristan, because I know someone with that name and I'm....not a fan, let's say. But if you love the name, go for it.
