So, why is it that Marie is everyone's and their mother's middle name? Its so rarely used as a first name. Whenever I meet someone named Marie I think "wait...thats against the rules, what possibly could their middle name be???"

Anywho, thoughts on Marie as a middle and first name? Would you ever give this middle name to your daughter?

My mother's name IS Marie.
But mine is Lynn, which is the OTHER middle name. LOL

I would never use it or anything similar (mary, merry, mariah...nope) because I'm bitter towards a Maria. LOL

funny you should use the word bitter, as Mary means "sea of bitterness"

My middle name is Marie.
My cousin's first name is Marie.

In my case, my middle name is Marie not because its popular as a middle name, but because it is a family name that my parents wanted to include with me.

And yes, I would give my daughter the middle name Marie...because of the family history. I plan to use all family middle names.

Its kind of annoying how expected Marie seems to be as a middle name...but then again I don't actually see it as much as I think people expect. I know plenty of people my age with Ann, Elizabeth, Brooke etc. as middle names.

To me, it's dull, boring, and a cop-out unless there is a special familial/etc. meaning.

My middle name is Maree, as is my mother's. Her mother (my Nan) didn't have a middle name so I'm not sure where it came from. I don't really like Maree that much, but I intend to give it to my first daughter, to continue the tradition -- Isabel Maree _____ (name from paternal grandmother/family member)

lol I never thought of what a person called Marie/Maree would have as a middle name. Maybe Jane? Elizabeth? Louise?

My mn is Marie - it's a family name; my grandma, aunt, and cousin all have the same mn. I do know a few people named Marie. I personally wouldn't use it, but I don't dislike it.

I've known 3 Maries but only one person with Marie as a middle name. it's not really my style so I wouldn't use it.

It's so true. I know at least 4 girls with the middle name of Marie. I personally wouldn't use it for a first or middle name. But I think it's pretty.
It makes me think of Drag Queens. :P

My middle name is Marie because it's a family name (all of my aunts are named Mary and my mum wanted to pay respect to them all--one being her sister and the other two being her sisters-in-law).

(i'm gonna get snarked for this i know it but..)

Whenever i find out someones middle name is Marie (or ann or lynn or anything like that) my first thought is "Hmm their parents were lazy"

Idk why it just frustrates me. Marie is a pretty name though. Its my moms middle name (But it was given to her by the catholic church or something...not by her parents. My middle name is Ann and i still think my parents are lazy :P)

Hmm, my mom claims she wasn't lazy with my siblings and I... ;p

Seriously though, our middle names are Lynn, John, and Marie. Heh.

I'm not a Marie/Maria fan at all. I like Mary, but I'd probably never use it. I dunno, I agree with other people. It's a cop-out, a filler... plus, I know a Maria (she's Spanish, so I guess it works) and she's strange, to use a safe word.

Most people in my generation had filler middle names like that. A ton of people with the middle name Marie. I don't know if it's that popular as a middle name anymore? It's actually my great-aunt's first name, so I associate it most with her.

my middle name is marie. my mothers middle name was marie, which was after her mother, who was named mary, but they thought colleen marie sounded better than colleen mary. i plan on passing it down someday, but its second in line, so i would have to have two girls.

My Dad's side of the family is French, and all of the Maries in my family tree (of which there have been many) have had middle names like Louise or Anne.

Or there's also this awesome Canadian figure skater whose name is Marie-France.

There were these sisters who went to my high school (I think they were 2 years apart) whose names were...*drum roll please*...Marie Elizabeth and Elizabeth Marie. When I first learned their middle names, my jaw literally dropped. Real creative parents, huh?

My best friend is called Maree... I don't know if it's the same thing? :P I like her name though - Maree Elise. I think it sounds better than Elise Maree.

My cousin's middle name is Marie, it's apparently a family name on my dad's side, but my mom didn't want to use it.

I think it's a cute first name.

I like the name Marie, as a first name. I wouldn't use it as a middle name (just because it usually is one).

My middle name is Marie, & when I was in elementary school I liked it much better than my first name (Nicole - another insanely common middle name among my peers. Oh joy). It is a family name, actually - my dad's favorite aunt had the first name Marie, and she died the year before I was born. His mom, who also died before I was born, had the middle name Maria. I probably won't pass the name on since it has such a filler connotation, but I do like the variant Mari.

Well, I went to school with a girl who had it as a first name. My neigbour has it as a middle name and my sisters played with the idea of using it, because they don't have middle names.

I actually don't know anyone whose middle or first name is Marie.
But my mom's middle name is Maria.

And no I would not ever give the middle name Marie to my daughter.

I know a Marie. her middle name is Louise :)

I think a lot of people who are religious, Catholic, really, choose a form of Mary as a middle name. Mary itself doesn't usually flow as a middle name, so Marie works better.

If I use Marie as a middle name, it'll be for my mom. Her name is Jeanmarie, and she hates Jean, so Marie it is!

I think Grace is the new Marie. Every girl baby I know that was born recently has Grace for a middle name.

Because most names people like have the accent on the first syllable of two, and it sounds weird to English speakers to pick a middle name that has the same pattern.

So people 9 times out of 10 pick either a 1 syllable name or a longer name that has the accent on the SECOND or THIRD syllable.

And then some names, like Lynn, Marie, etc. get passed down as safe options since they meet both a family and the syllable requirement.

my daughter's mn is Marie. My husband's family all have Marie as a middle name basically so we did it to pass it on to her. Her name is actually Lillian Marie and that is all his side. We named her after his grandmother and before Lillian/Lily got so damn popular!

a friend at school's mn was marie and my sister and my niece have the middle name marie. i quite liked it until i became increasingly aware how common it is. but i suppose it tends to flow a lot better than mary, as a middle name. i don't think it's great as a first name as it's basically mary. it's nice as a middle name, just boring and pointless so i wouldn't give it as a middle name to my daughter.

That is true, everybody I know with that name, has it as their middle. I think it's kind of plain and boring, first or middle.

I would use it as a first name. Not as a middle... too common, plus I have better names to use.

My middle name is Pauline and my sister's is Angelene. My mom didn't go the old common route with us.

In my husband's family it used to be that all the women were named Mary ____ and went by their middle name and the men were named Marie _____ and went by their middle name. They are Catholic and I always assumed that was why. Perhaps thats how Marie as a middle name grew in popularity?

My parents gave me the middle name of Marie. I forgave them though, because they came up with Karyssa instead of Carissa for my first :) I would never name my chile __ Marie __ just because it's so common, and I like unique names.
