The phenomenon that is Marie

So, why is it that Marie is everyone's and their mother's middle name? Its so rarely used as a first name. Whenever I meet someone named Marie I think "wait...thats against the rules, what possibly could their middle name be???"

Anywho, thoughts on Marie as a middle and first name? Would you ever give this middle name to your daughter?

My best friend is called Maree... I don't know if it's the same thing? :P I like her name though - Maree Elise. I think it sounds better than Elise Maree.
