Tempest?

I really like this name for a girl, but I'm not sure if I'd ever be brave enough to use it. I seem to have this habit of loving names that tend to be a little too 'out there'. I don't want my child to be stuck with a name everyone else has like I did when I was younger. I HATED being Jennifer T., along with Jennifer B., Jennifer C., and Jennifer W., etc. My husband, Jason, feels the same way. We want our kids to have good names, not super common names, but most definitely not weird names. Anyway, we both like it, but I'm worried it might be a 'weird-one'., Opinions?

Tempest almost has negative connotations to me; it's some pretty wicked weather, lol.

I like the Shakespearean connection, and it also makes me think of The Cosby Show (Tempestt Bledsoe).

I like it, but I wouldn't use it for a first name.

I like it, but since it's a storm AND the last part of the name spells Pest, I would steer away from it.

I like it actually.
It is quite odd but not tooooo odd. I've read books by Kathy Reiche (sp?) There's a series based on the books called 'bones' on Sky One, about an anthropologist called Temperance, nicknamed Tempe.
Also, I happen to love shakespeare refrence names.

England :-)
I haven't actually seen the show. The books are rather thick but i love them. Sort of written in the style of the anthropologist version of John Grisham.

I love it- it's strong, classic, and unusual without being weird.

The dictionary definition does give me pause - "A violent windstorm, frequently accompanied by rain, snow, or hail. Furious agitation, commotion, or tumult; an uproar."

I love rainstorms - clouds looming, rain pouring down, thunder roaring, and lightning splitting the sky. Absolutely breathtaking. But there is just so much violence and fury and noise in the definition of "tempest" that, as a personal name, it paints a picture of a really loud, angry, violent person. Sorry!

I like the name. I'm biased though because I have an LJ friend whose daughter is named that. She's a little redhead and it fits her so well.

I also love Shakespeare and I love Miranda so obviously I'm biased here as well.

I wouldn't use it as a first name. Only a certain kind of person could pull it off... what if your daughter wasn't that type of person? There are plenty of unusual, cool, but easier to bear names. And if it was a middle name she could still go by it, but have a more formal name to fall back on, or fall back on if she wasn't a Tempest.

Plus it reminds me of tempestuous, which reminds me how much I hate it when people give kids trait names, like Serenity, or Charity. It somehow seems begging for them to be nothing near serene, you know what I mean? Except with Tempest it'd be the opposite. You could always use Miranda or Arielle.

I like it, but it is the name of my dads heating and cooling business. So, I definatly wouldn't use it myself!

The thing is that word is common enough in poetry and literature to be known by a lot of people.

If you're ok with naming your kid Hurricane, then go ahead with Tempest.

She's have a bad temper I'd bet. Just because of the name.

I do think its kind of cute, but too bad of a connotation

I don't like it. I don't see how tempest is a positive thing, for me it sounds very negative and depressing.
