Jul. 16th, 2006 10:10 pm1. So, you know on Alice in Wonderland, her cat's name is Dinah (Dye-nuh). Is that how you spell it? Or is Dinah pronounced like Dee-nah? How about Dena or Dina? Are all of these pronounced Dee-nuh? And once you get the right spelling for DYE-nuh, does it sound like you're saying "diner" with a British accent, or does it actually sound like a name?
2. Which of these is better, if any (for someone hoping to get the nickname "Kes" out of it):
Kes
Kessa
Kesana / Kesanna
Kesandra / Kessandra
Kesandria / Kesandrea or Kessandria / Kessandrea
3. Is Anice or Annis too close to "anus" to be a good name?
4. How would you pronounce Evalena? I'm thinking ehv-ah-LEE-nuh, but maybe the first letter says eee instead of eh.
5. How about Adeline? ah-dah-lynn, ah-dah-leen, or ah-dah-line (line as in clothes line)? It isn't a terribly common name, but it's very close to Madeline. Like Addison to Madison. I think I'd avoid using either of those, just because they are so close to a popular name. (well, Addison is #107 for 2005, so still popular, but no where near as popular as Madison is).

Date: 2006-07-17 05:57 am (UTC)For Kes i like Kessa or Kesandria. However Ive met someone named Kezia and people call her Kez. You could make is Kesia though.. wait people may pronounce the end like Asia.. Ke-SIA..maybe not. idk..
Are you saying Anice/Annis like "AH-niece (like the spice)" or "anne-nis"? Annis is too ugly and close to anus. But Anice pronounced like the spice is fine.. except its a spice. Better than Anus though.
I say Evalena the same way as you, but this is my first time seeing it. I do like it though.
Im not sure about Adeline..

Date: 2006-07-17 06:51 am (UTC)2. Kessa and Kesana/Kesanna aren't bad, but I'm not a big fan of the other ones.
3. Yes.
4. yeah I would think ehvahleenuh.

Date: 2006-07-17 08:52 am (UTC)2. Kezia.
3. Not really similar to me - ANN-is vs. AY-nus.
4. Ev-ah-LEE-na or ev-ah-LAY-na.
5. AD-del-line.

Date: 2006-07-17 01:22 pm (UTC)2. I can't think of a name that I already know of, which has Kes as a nickname. Kessandra would get too confused with Cassandra, the others would be ok i guess
3. Recently I was reading a recipe which has anise in it and I thought it would make a pretty name. I pronounce it like "uh-NEES" though, so it sounds nothing like anus. The way you pronounce it does sound more like that
4. I pronounce it the same way you do. Evv-uh-LEE-nuh
5. ADD-a-line

Date: 2006-07-17 01:37 pm (UTC)4. I would say ee-vah-lee-na

Date: 2006-07-17 02:15 pm (UTC)2. I like Kessa and Kesana for the nn Kes.
3. Annis and Anice don't LOOK too much like anus, but they do sound too much like it. As a mn I think it would be ok. Then it doesn't have to be shared.
4. I would say Ehv-uh-LEE-nuh, and I really like it. I like it way better than Evelyn.
5. I would say Adeline with INE like clothesline. I ADORE Addison and wish it wasn't gaining in popularity so much. It's on my top 5, and I don't think I could make it go down unless I met a bunch of little Addisons. I love it.

Date: 2006-07-17 02:43 pm (UTC)I have also read The Red Tent
Date: 2006-07-17 06:11 pm (UTC)If you look at the word in Hebrew the first letter is Dalet, so there's the "D" and the dot underneath is how you indicate the vowel. One dot underneath means an "ee" sound (whereas two side by side dots are "ay", three triangular dots are "eh", a line is "ah" a dot on top of the letter is "oh" and 3 diagonal dots underneath are "oo")
So, the first part of the name is Dee, the next letter is Yod which is usually silent unless it has a vowel attatched. After that is Nun which is "N" and the symbol underneath also means "ah". The last letter is Hey or "H".
so Dalet, Yod, Nun, Hey is pronounced Dee-nah.
Now in different parts of the world, and through translations over time, the name could certainly be pronounced Dye-nah but the original Hebrew is Dee-nah, and that is why they suggest it in The Red Tent.

3. Yes.
4. My first thought was 'eev'.. but I guess *if you made it up, you can pronounce it how you want.
5. I love Adeline, with the line pronunciation. I do foresee it becoming somewhat popular, since it has the same 'feel' as Madeline and Addison.

Date: 2006-07-18 04:53 am (UTC)4. I wasn't saying you did, I just wasn't sure and was too lazy to look it up, LOL Evalena.. hmm. I'd still prnounce it Ee-va.. I like it better that way. =D

Date: 2006-07-17 03:44 pm (UTC)1. Dinah is dye-nah as far as I know and Dina is dee-nah (and I would assume Dena would be be dee-nah as well, but I don't know anyone with it spelled that way)
2. I'm really not sure about any of those because they all seem really odd to me (which is not necessarily a bad thing). My only thing would be that most of that last row could be easily confused with Cassandra (or any other spelling of that name)
3. I think it is. I don't go crazy trying to think of ways my (future) children could be made fun of for their names, but that just screams bad idea to me.
4. I would think eh-vah-LEE-nuh which is really close to what you have and may end up sounding the same.
5. ad-ah-line is how I've always heard it pronounced.

Date: 2006-07-17 05:39 pm (UTC)2. I don't really like any of the "Kes" begining names you listed. I think Kessia is nice though.
3. Yes it is too close to Anus, in my opinion.
4. I'd say Ehv-ah-LEE-nuh
5. I'd say ah-duh-LINE, unless the person were french in which case I'd say ah-del-een.

3. I didn't think of "anus" but now that you mention it...xDD I like Anise though. Like the spice.
4. Hmm. "EHV a leen uh," "EEV a leen uh," or "AYV a leen uh"? I think I'd say "AYV a leen uh."
5. Adeline is good. I say "add-uh-line." Like in that song "Sweet Adeline"...

3. hmm i dont like either od those names, but i do like Anais.
4. I'd say Ever-lena.
5. At first i would say ad-uh-line but i think i prefer ad-uh-lyn, but im not sure how you would spell that without it looking super trendy.
