Jul. 16th, 2006 10:10 pm1. So, you know on Alice in Wonderland, her cat's name is Dinah (Dye-nuh). Is that how you spell it? Or is Dinah pronounced like Dee-nah? How about Dena or Dina? Are all of these pronounced Dee-nuh? And once you get the right spelling for DYE-nuh, does it sound like you're saying "diner" with a British accent, or does it actually sound like a name?
2. Which of these is better, if any (for someone hoping to get the nickname "Kes" out of it):
Kes
Kessa
Kesana / Kesanna
Kesandra / Kessandra
Kesandria / Kesandrea or Kessandria / Kessandrea
3. Is Anice or Annis too close to "anus" to be a good name?
4. How would you pronounce Evalena? I'm thinking ehv-ah-LEE-nuh, but maybe the first letter says eee instead of eh.
5. How about Adeline? ah-dah-lynn, ah-dah-leen, or ah-dah-line (line as in clothes line)? It isn't a terribly common name, but it's very close to Madeline. Like Addison to Madison. I think I'd avoid using either of those, just because they are so close to a popular name. (well, Addison is #107 for 2005, so still popular, but no where near as popular as Madison is).

3. Annis and Anice don't LOOK too much like anus, but they do sound too much like it. As a mn I think it would be ok. Then it doesn't have to be shared.
4. I would say Ehv-uh-LEE-nuh, and I really like it. I like it way better than Evelyn.
5. I would say Adeline with INE like clothesline. I ADORE Addison and wish it wasn't gaining in popularity so much. It's on my top 5, and I don't think I could make it go down unless I met a bunch of little Addisons. I love it.

Date: 2006-07-17 06:11 pm (UTC)If you look at the word in Hebrew the first letter is Dalet, so there's the "D" and the dot underneath is how you indicate the vowel. One dot underneath means an "ee" sound (whereas two side by side dots are "ay", three triangular dots are "eh", a line is "ah" a dot on top of the letter is "oh" and 3 diagonal dots underneath are "oo")
So, the first part of the name is Dee, the next letter is Yod which is usually silent unless it has a vowel attatched. After that is Nun which is "N" and the symbol underneath also means "ah". The last letter is Hey or "H".
so Dalet, Yod, Nun, Hey is pronounced Dee-nah.
Now in different parts of the world, and through translations over time, the name could certainly be pronounced Dye-nah but the original Hebrew is Dee-nah, and that is why they suggest it in The Red Tent.
