I feel so bad for one of the kids I teach. His name is Agabus. What do you think? Is that not the cruelest name you can call a child?

Here are other interesting names of kids I teach:

Seth
Evan (Girl)
Dante
Monty (Montgomery)
Medina
Hazel
Rachel
Isabella
Mason
Shakeel
Sahib (pronounced SIGH-hib)
Harshdeep

Thoughts?

I don't know which one is worse, Agabus or Harshdeep... what were the parents smoking?

Harshdeep is a traditional Indian name. I doubt they were smoking anything.

I've never heard of Agabus before, though. I googled it and it's in the Bible. It has all sorts of unpleasant sounds in it. "Ag", "uh" "bus".

Really? Traditional? It sounds like someone took random words from a dictionary and just put them together. Is it originally spelled this way?

It still looks horrible for me, one of those names that works well in its culture, and nowhere else. You know, like Candida. It's a perfectly normal name in Portuguese-speaking countries. A bit old-fashioned, true, but perfectly legit.

Yes it's fairly common. There are many Indian names that end with -deep.
I would imagine their dictionary is different from ours.

I had to look it up to see if it was just made up or if they got it from somewhere. I now believe it's a safe bet that they're Christian.

Agabus was an early follower of Christianity mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles as a prophet. He is traditionally remembered as one of the Seventy Disciples described in Luke 10:1-24.

I'm interested in biblical names, and it was a biblical name that I created the name of my son from. I've gotten flack for the name, but I don't think it's as bad as some bible names, like Agabus.

I'm very curious to know how this child named Agabus feels about his name, and if he gets teased much at all. Could you possibly let me know?

I also think Harshdeep is worse. It just looks like two words put together, and to me it is saying "bad trouble". The other one is bad so I wont type it here haha.

I accidentally laughed at the "egg on a bus" D:

But still, jeez. Traditional names or not, have some mercy on your children!

Wow, that is so sad!

Do you know if his parents know, and if so, why they wont either change his name, or at least try to come up with a nick name for him that is better?!

If I named a child something that they ended up hating, I would definitely either change it or give them a nick name as an alternative. With Agabus I see no good nick name just from it, and it just doesn't sound good, so I don't understand how the parents could choose it in the first place. But once they know how much their child hates it, and that it's causing teasing like that they should do something about it.

Sahib--it's like someone was going for an upscale version of Duke or Earl. Yet they failed.

Though I'd never use it, and it isn't on my list, Evan on a girl is guilty pleasure of mine. Not my style, but I also am fond of Dante.

I love Evan as a girl's name.
Where do you teach? Those names are definitely not common around here, but I'm in Kansas so that's probably why.

I actually really like Harshdeep in context. I assume that Sahib and Shakeel are also ethnic names?

I don't think that Seth is a very interesting name. Nor Rachel or Isabella. Those are pretty plain and common.

I like Mason though it makes me think of Dead Like Me and Will and Grace.

Poor Agabus and Harshdeep:(

I really like Monty. I don't think I would name my child that, but it's cute on someone else's child. Haha.

I really love Sahib. And Medina is quite nice, too.

I feel really bad for Harshdeep :( That just unfortunately doesn't work in an English speaking country.
