One of our customers at work is called Michael. Common enough, right? Except that Michael is a woman. A friend of mine tells me that Michael can also be a female name, but I'm not so sure.

Princess Michael of Kent doesn't count - her name is actually Marie Christine :P

I know a Michael that's a girl. Her middle name is Anne, so she usually goes by Michael Anne.

I went to high school with a girl named Michael. She went by Miki (sounds like Mikey). I always thought it was a boy name that occasionally got used on girls. Like Ashley, but too masculine sounding to turn into a almost exclusively girl name.

i have a cousin named Michael and she is a girl. but there is a weird family back story to that one.

two of my dads cousins were pregnant at the same time and they were sisters and they both wanted to name their son Michael. well the one sister gave birth first and to a girl, so she named her Michael Annalise so that her sister couldn't name her child Michael who ended up being a boy... who named him Michael James anyways.

so girl Michael goes by Annie and boy Michael goes by Jimmy... haha... their respective fathers started calling them at so neither have gone by Michael.

I really dislike the trend of giving a girl a boy name and vice versa. I can understand people's expectations for a child of a specific gender, still, I find it selfish to give a child who is the opposite of the gender pined for, a name fitting for the gender they wanted, instead of one for the gender they ended up with. I mean seriously if a mother/father wanted a boy that bad and wanted to name said boy Michael, but said boy turned out to be a boy, either go with Michelle, or for pete's sake, use it as a middle name.

When I was growing up we had a Michael who lived in our neighboorhood who was female. It really confused me because that is my brother's name! I'm 32 and she was probably 4 yrs or so younger than me.

It can be a female name, because people use it that way. No matter how many girls I met with that name (I have yet to meet any, though), it'll always be a boy's name, and only a boy's name, to me. Same with James. Don't get that either.

One of my former neighbors was a woman named Michael. I think she might have been an MTF tranny, though. My roommate and I were never certain. While I've never met any other female Michaels, I've heard of it being used on females occasionally. Really, really not my style.
