Are there any names that are also names of US states that you like?

The only one I can think of that I like is Georgia, and I think that is because it was definitely a name before it was a state. Same with Virginia although I don't like it. I met a kid named New Jersey once, I think that was going a little far.

So WDYT? Any good state names? Avoid them altogether?

Oh, and I knew a family about 10-12 years ago with two kids: Montana (boy) nicknamed Tanner. (What? I know.) And Dakota (boy) nicknamed Coty.

Dakota? I don't like it, but it is a semi-popular name.

NEW JERSEY?!?! lol that's crazy!

It's incredibly tacky. I don't get why you'd name a kid after somewhere.

I mean it's a personal loathing of mine to name a child after a place simply because people fail to realise what they're naming their baby after. I recently came across a 'London' now, the capital is currently known for it's huge amount of racist violence, and murders of teenages. It's always been a violent place, with some of the worst torture techniques known to the Brits coming from that place. Why on earth would you not think about the area you're naming your kid after?

I'm guilty of liking Dakota.
OK, loving Dakota.
I've always wanted to have a little girl named Dakota Ryleigh. lol

I also really like Alaska.
I just think it's a really pretty name. :)

I don't know if I'd use it, though.

I like a bunch of those! I once met an italian girl named Louisiana
I used to like Virginia, but not anymore.

I like:
Texas
Carolina (but prn Caro-leena)
Alabama
Nevada

And I think California and Tennessee are semi-nice too.
Pennsylvania is interesting because it's almost a blend between Penelope and Sylvana, while I totally dislike Georgia!

Vermont would make an interesting boy's name.

I like it for males better than females... probably because of Indiana Jones.

I really really like Dakota. I like Oregon for a boy for some reason. I don't think I would ever name my child Oregon, but it sounds nice.

I don't mind Carolina, Georgia, Virginia or Montana.

The only states I think work as names are...

Georgia
Carolina
Dakota
Virginia

Anything else is a little weird. Some less than others though.

Jersey wouldn't be so horrific, but New Jersey is just a no.

I definitely love Georgia and Carolina isn't so bad, but I'd prefer to pronounce that Caro-leena.

Alaska, Indiana, Georgia, Carolina, Dakota, Tennesseee, Virginia.

Of the names I really only like Tennessee, which is a guilty pleasure. I don't even know why I like it, but there it is. ^^

Dakota, Alaska, and California (nn. Callie) are uber-guilty pleasures of mine. I also once met someone named Arizona, and it totally worked on her.

But I dislike everything else...the "usual" ones like Virginia, Georgia, etc.

Georgia is the worst place I've never lived, so I'd never name my child that.

I currently live in Indiana so it's kinda lame.

Dakota is too popular for me.

I think Alaska is cute though.

Dakota (on a boy only) is a GP of mine because I had a good friend named Dakota growing up who was awesome. I think his mom's name was Montana, but I could be making that up.

I also like Georgia and Carolina. California is something of a GP for me also because of the song "Dani California."

I have a friend whose middle name is Louisiana. Not sure if there's a significance to that or if her parents just liked it.

I've always liked Georgia and its variants. Not really a fan of the rest.

I'm originally from the Northeast Illinois region...the area by the IL-IN state line is often called Illiana, and the MI-IN state line area is often called Michiana. I dread the day I see someone name their kid Illiana or Michiana.

Well, I once lived in Missouri, which I thought was really beautiful, and then Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise had a daughter, and named her "Suri", which is sort of like the end of Missouri, that's why I kind of like the name Suri.

So, not that I would name a child after a state, but for the sake of your question haha I would go with Missouri, with the nick name "Suri".

Georgia is my favorite, followed by Carolina and Virginia. I also have a guilty spot for Alaska. We used it on a white kitten at the humane society. =]

I can't stand Dakota and Montana as names. Not in the least.

This reminds me of the movie with Julia Stiles where her dad names his daughters after the state they were born in. Georgia, Carolina, and Maine. Then Georgia had a baby and named him California nn Cal.

I know an Arizona, a Montana, a Dakota (is that a state? Sorry. No idea about America) & a Carolina.

I live in Australia. All four have no family connections to America.

This deeply saddens my heart.

And multiple Georgias, but that is not really a state, yes? It is a name to me before a state. Carolina is too, but pronounced Caro-leena. The Carol I mentioned above is CaroLYna (which I believe is how the state is pronounced.)

Could somebody please correct me if I'm wrong?

My daughters name is Montana.

I live in Australia, half the people here couldnt care less about its association. (nor do they really know)I've had nothing but compliments.. except for my aunty who told me she once had a horse named Montana. haha.

I've heard plenty of people in this comm say, ohh i love the name Adelaide!! Which is the capital of South Australia.. along with names such as Sydney or Darwin. All place names. there's a much bigger world outside the US. :)

I think the only states that work for names are Southern-y states.

Alabama is such a guilty pleasure for me. I think I shall name my next Sim baby Alabama. I also really like Tennessee (more acceptable because of Tennessee Williams, right? Right?) and Georgia is a name that I am deeply considering for a little girl, but it might not work, since my name is Savannah.

I like Georgia, Virginia and Carolina but I don't really remember the names of most of the states so it's hard for me to say. I'm from Europe so the US states don't really matter to me and I think it's tackier to name a child Paris or London or Rome than a real name like Carolina for example.

I think Dakota is gorgeousss.
I've heard of boys & girls named that.
Prefer it for a girl, but boy's not too, too bad.

Carolina, or at least Caroline, is kinda cute.
