State Names
Nov. 21st, 2008 09:54 amAre there any names that are also names of US states that you like?
The only one I can think of that I like is Georgia, and I think that is because it was definitely a name before it was a state. Same with Virginia although I don't like it. I met a kid named New Jersey once, I think that was going a little far.
So WDYT? Any good state names? Avoid them altogether?

Date: 2008-11-21 06:28 pm (UTC)I mean it's a personal loathing of mine to name a child after a place simply because people fail to realise what they're naming their baby after. I recently came across a 'London' now, the capital is currently known for it's huge amount of racist violence, and murders of teenages. It's always been a violent place, with some of the worst torture techniques known to the Brits coming from that place. Why on earth would you not think about the area you're naming your kid after?

Date: 2008-11-21 06:37 pm (UTC)OK, loving Dakota.
I've always wanted to have a little girl named Dakota Ryleigh. lol
I also really like Alaska.
I just think it's a really pretty name. :)
I don't know if I'd use it, though.

Date: 2008-11-21 06:40 pm (UTC)I used to like Virginia, but not anymore.
I like:
Texas
Carolina (but prn Caro-leena)
Alabama
Nevada
And I think California and Tennessee are semi-nice too.
Pennsylvania is interesting because it's almost a blend between Penelope and Sylvana, while I totally dislike Georgia!
Vermont would make an interesting boy's name.

Date: 2008-11-21 07:44 pm (UTC)I definitely love Georgia and Carolina isn't so bad, but I'd prefer to pronounce that Caro-leena.

Date: 2008-11-21 09:43 pm (UTC)I currently live in Indiana so it's kinda lame.
Dakota is too popular for me.
I think Alaska is cute though.

Date: 2008-11-21 09:44 pm (UTC)I also like Georgia and Carolina. California is something of a GP for me also because of the song "Dani California."
I have a friend whose middle name is Louisiana. Not sure if there's a significance to that or if her parents just liked it.

Date: 2008-11-22 02:44 am (UTC)I'm originally from the Northeast Illinois region...the area by the IL-IN state line is often called Illiana, and the MI-IN state line area is often called Michiana. I dread the day I see someone name their kid Illiana or Michiana.

Date: 2008-11-22 03:00 am (UTC)So, not that I would name a child after a state, but for the sake of your question haha I would go with Missouri, with the nick name "Suri".

Date: 2008-11-22 03:45 am (UTC)I can't stand Dakota and Montana as names. Not in the least.
This reminds me of the movie with Julia Stiles where her dad names his daughters after the state they were born in. Georgia, Carolina, and Maine. Then Georgia had a baby and named him California nn Cal.

I've heard plenty of people in this comm say, ohh i love the name Adelaide!! Which is the capital of South Australia.. along with names such as Sydney or Darwin. All place names. there's a much bigger world outside the US. :)

Date: 2008-11-22 10:43 pm (UTC)Alabama is such a guilty pleasure for me. I think I shall name my next Sim baby Alabama. I also really like Tennessee (more acceptable because of Tennessee Williams, right? Right?) and Georgia is a name that I am deeply considering for a little girl, but it might not work, since my name is Savannah.

Date: 2008-11-25 01:22 am (UTC)I've heard of boys & girls named that.
Prefer it for a girl, but boy's not too, too bad.
Carolina, or at least Caroline, is kinda cute.
