[identity profile] sian-y.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I've been lurking on this comm for forever lol.

But I finally decided to post something.

what are your opinions on these names.

Sian (pronounced Sharn) thats my name.

Bethan (pronounced Beth-anne) my  13 yr old sister

Riona (rhymes with Fiona) my 11 yr old sister.

EDIT: I am British, Sian & Bethan are both Welsh names and Riona is (i think) Irish

Also one of my mums hairdressers relatives has a little girl called:

Heaven-Leigh (pronounced Heavenly)

WTF????

WHOA WHOA WHOA WARNING!!!!

Your profile doesn't say where you're located, but you are absolutely outside of the US by my reckoning.

And the way that you have explained how to pronounce your name is going to make all the Americans BUTCHER your name, since they use consonant Rs where you (after a vowel, before a consonant) would just pronounce it like an H.

So. Since most of this community is American (but obviously has many outside the States, all over the globe), keep in mind that to them it's more like "Shahn" and NOT NOT NOT like Sharn. At all.

Hehehe. I just saw this post come up and instantly did a head-desk, imagining all the Americans saying "Sharn" to themselves. Totally, incredibly different!

That's what I get for being an American living in the UK... hypersensitivity to these issues. I remember once somebody in this community asked how to pronounce a name. It might have been Yanni or something like that.

A couple of Brits responded with "Yarni", which for them is correct, but to Americans isn't, because British R equals American H — and I swear dozens of Americans jumped on them all like "WTF?! YARNI? Are you on crack?" type of things.

And so yes. Thought I'd nip that one in the bud.

I like Sian. I've never heard of it. I also like Bethanne, but I wouldn't say Bethan the same way. Looks more like Nathan to me...
Riona is pretty but not my style.

I have to say, as different as the names may be, I like the sibset. They all go together really well. Separately though...I think that I probably like Riona the best, then Sian. I'm really not pronouncing Bethan the way that it's supposed to be, so I don't really like it the way that it's supposed to be said.

Heaven-Leigh is awful. Awful.

Okay, good, 'cause I was saying Bethan like Nathan really; then when I started saying Beth-anne I didn't like it. All very nice names then!

I'd describe Bethan as being pronounced BETH-un, I think. Although I did actually know one Bethan who pronounced it Beth-anne. I always thought that was odd.

They are all pretty names.

I'm confused on Sian being "sharn". Not that I disbelieve it, but I know Siannan is pronounced "shannan", so I'm not sure where the R comes from.

It's screwin' with mah head! :D

I think it's pronounced like "Sean" in America. She's from the UK. :o)

Maybe it's the accent, but in the UK there's quite a distinct difference between the pronunciation of Sean and Sian. Sean is like shawn/shorn and Sian is like shahn/sharn.

That's definitely a UK thing.
Here, unless it's a distinctly local dialect, it's all "shahn/sharn".

while heaven-leigh is stupid, i'm very fond of the name autumn-leigh but with a bit of a pause in there so its not autumnly
i wouldnt use it though. because everyone would call her autumnly, as if something were happening in a way that was like autumn.

I've always loved the name Sian. Last pregnancy, if I had a boy, he was going to be either Sian Alasdair or Sian David.
