Hey-

I am currently pregnant and my fiance and I are shooting around names. We sort of said if its a girl I would get to pick the first name and he would get the middle and then if its a boy he would get the first and I the middle...

So here is what we have so far:

Boy: Norman Joseph (Same as my fiances name, and my uncles name for the middle, tho everyone in my family has that middle name. it wouldn't be a junior either.)

Girl: Riley Marie

I really always wanted my kids to have unique names but I guess thats not really going to happen. I LOVE Riley but now of course I hear it everywhere and Marie is for his sister but I think its such a common middle name.

As time goes on I am starting to really dislike both of these but he is set on them so I dont really know how I can say umm ok new names, I dont like them anymore ...

Anyone have any ideas? Maybe different spelling or something? Middle names that might spice up the names?

Thanks!

Norman? Really? Wow.

I like Riley a lot, but I won't use it because it's just too popular now =( That's why most of my names seem to be going out the window. Sheesh

Don't let popularity ruin it for you. All that matters is if YOU like it.

You guys are going to get married and you're pregnant with his kid, I definitely feel like you can say "Hey, these names kind of suck in my opinion, let's rethink this."

I don't think all that matters if them at all, a lot of kids hate having really popular names. One girl ended up going by Mickey because we were both Michelle Lynn L. and there was another Michelle Lynn in our grade as well (our classes mixed for certain subjects). It seriously sucked.

Well, I shouldn't talk because my name is Ember. But my brother is Anthony, my parents are Erin and James, so those are pretty popular

I don't know if I HAVE asked you before, but I meant to. Do you like your name?
I love your name. Like a lot. I like the name Emily (this baby is a boy so it's a non-issue I guess) but it is the #1 most popular name (has been for a long time) and I hate that. I was leaning towards Emerson for a girl (if I ever get one) but I REALLY LOVE EMBER. lol

Haha, I really like it. I get the occasional "Amber", but I usually only have to correct people once and they get it, but I stopped correcting people I will never talk to again a long time ago, haha. The only time I've had an issue with someone else having the same name was when there was an Amber, Amburr (pronounces Omm-ber) and me in one class, and we all sat together.

I really like Emerson as well, and Emaline.

My son's name is Brendan and people CONSTANTLY call him "Brandon" and I hate that name. Kind of want to smack them.

My mom gets hardcore about it, and so do my friends. I don't really care.

To be honest, Norman is pretty much the only boy's name (together with Todd) I hate. I really like Joseph though.

I also like Riley Marie, but I agree it's not very unique (if that's still what you want). Also, Riley may be hard to pull of as an adult (maybe that's just me).

As for Marie...how about using a variant that's less common? Or just a similar name? Some suggestions:

Marianne
Marisol
Maribelle
Mariette
Marielle
Marisa
Marilou
Marion
Marilyn
Marguerite
Mariska
Maritza

Ah, I see.
Well how about 'honoring' him in a different way, like mixing up the letters? Roman has pretty much the same letters, I personally like that one. Oh, and I went to class with a guy called Moran...almost the same letters as well. So does Ramon...Aron..maybe that last one is a little too much of a stretch ;)
Good luck finding a name you both like!

My dad's name is Norman. Most people don't like it but I love it (but maybe that's because my dad is ace). Maybe suggest use Norman as a middle name if you don't like it so much?

I like Riley Marie too. Popular isn't always bad, but what kind of other girl's name were you thinking of? more unique, classic? Do you particularly like the ending -ey? A similar, unisex name I found is brylee, though it might sound a bit made up as it is according to babynamesworld lol

anyway good luck on choosing a name :)

We changed our name until we were in the hospital. If you dont like the name now, don't stick your baby with it it's whole life.

As for sub-set..I think Norman and Riley sound weird together.

Norman Joseph is ... old sounding. It's alright, but not my taste. Could you use Norman as the middle name?

Riley is terribly popular.

You have a lot of time to talk these things over. The kid doesn't have to have a name at birth.

Sit down with him and each of you make a list of names you like. Just names you like, not names you think the other might like. Then compare them and see what the lists have in common. Then go from there.

yep for a boy..what a horrible girls name would that be O.o
but in times of girls called joseph , james etc I wouldnt wonder ;)

thats why I thought maybe he could live with his name as a middle name...I mean he still gave his name to his baby ;)
maybe you could find a boys name you both like...
make a list
and use norman as middle name :P

Norman is not my style at all. Neither is Joseph really.

I have a cousin named Riley Rene. It's cute but extremely common.
I for one do not want my child to have to go by there first name and last initial when they start school like I did (I'm an Ashley, and was always referred to as Ashley H. when role was called)

My brother (and father!) are now both adult Norman's and while I dont think it ever bothered my dad, I know my brother (and I actually) haaaaated having such an old fashioned name growing up.

He couldnt be anything but a Norm/Normy now but it was hard having such an adult name as a kid. (My name is Janine. When said together we sound like a couple born in the 40s).

Perhaps Norman as a middle name? Do you think your SO would go for it?
