As I was reading Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven" today, I came across "Aidenn", a place-name Poe used referring to the garden of Eden. I thought that was kind of interesting because of the massive popularity of Aiden/Aidan names today, and I hadn't seen it spelled that way before. (Also, it has a completely different meaning from Aidan, which means "fire" in Irish, I think.) Now I am completely anti-things-that-rhyme-with-Aidan, but I like this spelling better than Aidan/Aiden. What do you think?

ETA: I remembered that when I first heard the name Aiden (a boy in the grade younger than me) I thought it was a girl's name, and a variation of the Hebrew name Eden (pronounced EH-den, not EE-den) which, like "Aidenn", comes from the garden of Eden.

ETAA: I really hope this entry does not influence any expecting parents to name their sons Aidenn instead of John or Henry, because that was totally not my intention! I just want to know what people think of this spelling/meaning versus the popular one.

Which one do you prefer between Sabrina and Sabina? (Teenage witch connotations aside :P)
What are possible nicknames? In Italy they would easily be shortened to Sabry and Saby, respectively, but I'm looking for other options. I like Brina for Sabrina but not Bina for Sabina.
Do you think Saby could work for Sabrina?

What do you think of the name Kendra?

Ok, we've decided on Ariana and Desiree for our twins first names but we're absolutely stuck on middle names. So far we've got nothing so any suggestions would be appreciated! TIA!!!

I know a guy who was called Suna Mohammed. (pn SUN-nuh) I suppose mostly because of the negative connotations of being Arabic, he legally changed it to Wesley. (Not sure what he changed his surname to)

So, what do you think of Suna? What about Wesley?

I quite like Suna, and I hate Wesley. I think it's sad that people feel ashamed of their heritage and change their names to fit in.

my grandmother had a small book Names For Boys & Girls from 1966! i thought i would type up some of the things in it, including names, & tips on naming your child :)

first, Things to think about when selecting a name: "...one of the first things to keep in mind is your national and racial heritage... Another point to remember is the physical characteristics of both sides of the family... Then there's another important thing to remember: does it go with the last name?... The rule is this: A long name goes better with a short first name and vice versa."

The nickname will be important: "If you don't like the nickname Meg, then don't name your baby girl Margaret... in recent times the use of nicknames as given names has become quite acceptable. And so many birth certificates now carry a name such as Polly, Jim, Dick, Betty, and Becky."

Edit: advice on uni-sex names:
"And even though they're lovely names... be careful of names that, at least soundwise, fit both sexes. Examples are: Francis (Frances), Jean (Gene), Kerry (Carrie), and Gail (Gale). These are safer used as middle names with a first name that is unmistakably masculine or feminine."

& now, names that:
- i had either not heard of (there were a few!)
- found surprising (because i didn't realize they were very popular back then)
- had more kr8yve spellings (Ys thrown in)
- also, some of the meanings for names are WAY different than now (IE: Ryan, as far as i knew meant "Little king", in this book it means "A capable executive" lol!)

Boys:
Names A-L )

Names M-Z )

Keitha (keith-uh)

It looks pretty written down, but I think it sounds terrible...

What do you think?

Hi everyone! I'm new here, so I thought I'd make my first post a good one - a list of the babies born at one of the local hospitals since the hospital's site was redone in August.  Oh, and I'd just like to say that I am a name addict. I'm constantly making lists of names I like.

For the longest time, I've had my top 3 names for each gender basically set. However, I've recently been reconsidering these, and I'm wondering what you think. Middle names are set in stone as middle names, but I'm willing to budge on first names if you have any other suggestions. My other favorites include Elliot, Torben, Caleb, and Jack for boys and Catherine, Madeleine, Kendra, Anna, and Harriet for girls.

Sibling Set A
BOYS
Samuel Michael/Sam
Henry Carver/Huck or Hank
Charles Atticus/Charlie
GIRLS
Eleanor Margaret/Ellie
Juliet Adrienne
Louisa Harper

Sibling Set B
BOYS
Brendan Michael
Graham Atticus
Phineas Carver/Finn
GIRLS
Piper Adrienne
Anika Margaret/I would consider "Ani" (like DiFranco)
Maren Eleanor/I would consider calling her Mia
