I know in the past there's been a lot of discussion of unisex names that are now more commonly used on girls, such as Robin, Ashley, Marion, etc. I've been interested to see when the names became more popular on girls, so I checked out the stats on the Name Voyager and this is what I found:

Names )

I thought it was really interesting, because a lot of the discussions in the community tend to assume that the boys-names-on-girls phenomenon is very new, when the data shows that the names have been popular on girls (with the exception of Ashley) for over 100 years, and that, in fact, the name Marion (which most would consider to be a feminine name) became more popular on boys in the last 40 years.

Note: I know there are names I didn't look at, but there are SO MANY that are "unisex" that it would take me forever. I just used the ones that either I was interested in, or that are frequently listed when people are discussing "unisex names that became girls' names."

I met a baby the other day named Harper Rose, and a couple at church just had their first baby, named Madison Olivia.

The only name that I like out of these is Rose, but both babies are absolutely precious and I think their names fit well. WDYT?

A recent post asked about names you would NOT consider using because of pop culture references (tv, movies, books, etc...). What about names that, for you, benefit from these references? Are there any names that you love because of their use in a book, movie, etc...? What about any names that aren't "real" names that you would use because of a fictional reference?

For me, I love the name Kisten because of the Rachel Morgan books, Dresden for the Harry Dresden series, Leander from Greek Mythology, Gage from Pet Cemetary, Curran from Magic Bites, and probably a lot more if I thought about it.  I also love Ender, but I don't know that I would ever really use it. For girls, I love Phedre from the Kushiel series, Antigone from Antigone, Nimue from Arthurian literature, Hero from Greek mythology.

WDYT?

Names I love and would use:
Ivy
Asha

Names I like and might use:
Kezia

Ellis

Names I like but don't know if I'd use:
Sky/Skye
India
Emelia

Ezra
Jesse
Ash

Names I like but are probably too popular to use:
Amelia
Phoebe
Kate

Max
Dylan
Elliot
Theo (but my brother is Leo so that might be a bit too similar anyway??)

So as you can see it's a bit brief and there are no boys names that I love anymore, help!
What are your favoutire boys names?
What boys names do you think I would like?

Also, for those of you who consider popularity when choosing names, where is your cut off line for "too popular"?
For me it used to be if its in the top 20 or I know too many people with that name, but now I'm just not too sure.

Also I was suprised to find that Ellis is way more popular than Elliot ( http://www.statistics.gov.uk/specials/babiesnames_boys.asp ) but I consider it to be the other way round because I have come accross a lot of Elliots and only one Ellis. This could be that there are more ways of spelling Elliot, though...

Rilla

My family and I were talking about naming children after characters in books, when Anne of Green Gables was brought up.

Honestly, I could never get into the series, I found it pretty dull, so is it a little wrong if I like the name Rilla? I'm feeling like I shouldn't, since I haven't read the books.

Do you guys like names from shows, books, movies, that you hate/have never seen/read?
And what do you think of the name Rilla?

1. I had a dream last night that I had twins called Jayne and Edward. Two of my favourite names, but the dream was really random!

2. My boyfriend told me the other day he liked the name Erin. I don't love it, but I certainly like it! I prefer it spelt Aeryn, but I highly doubt that'll meet the approval of the BF! What middle names do you like, with either/both spelling?

3. I have finally revamped my list of top ten favourite names. I love every one of the names on the list, but I'm not sure I like the combos. Help please?

Names under here )

Thankies!

Hope this hasnt been posted.

Model-actress Milla Jovovich gave birth to a baby girl named Ever Anderson Saturday morning in Los Angeles, reports Us Weekly.

“Everything went really smooth,” says the source.

Russia-born Milla, 31, welcomed her first child at L.A.’s Cedars Sinai Medical Center with director fiance Paul Anderson, 42, by her side.

The couple has been dating for seven years, since he directed her in Resident Evil.

I like it, but wouldnt use it.

Good Evening!

We have a new addition to our family! We have been adopted by a stray chihuahua. It was living in our front yard and has become soul mates with my neice and nephew. So, joining Sam Winchester (big dog), Dean Winchester (big dog), Divia (cat), Macushla (cat), and Lola (cat) is the newly named Ana Lucia.

Why Ana Lucia? Well....she was Lost and of Hispanic heritage.  She's also prone to unnecessary acts of aggression to establish her dominance so it fit:)

We call her Lucy, most of the time, though.

I'm really dreading the amount of work I have to do this weekend soooo... let's play another game instead!

on to the naming... )
[identity profile] requiem-morrow.livejournal.com
OK, so I'm starting work on a new Torchwood fanfic but I'm having issues naming my original female character. So, here are some characteristics I have nailed down -

female, obviously
tall
athletic, but not "skinny"
smart
funny with a smart, dry wit
caring
insightful
American
@30 yrs old

and given it is a sci-fi piece

she can steal knowledge from other people with her brain (bwhahaha!)

I'd like something uncommon but not whacked, if that makes sense.

Any suggestions??

Thanks!
