There is a lot of discussion on this blog about the use of extremely popular names: Emma, Grace, Aiden, Jayden etc. It seems like the general consensus is that these names should be avoided. (I know not everyone feels this way.) What I am wondering is - did people naming children in the recent past A. realize these trends as easily and B. care and/or discourage their use?

Were people in the 80s saying, OMG another Tiffany? How could you?

Did the 50s mom roll her eyes at the five Lindas in her child's class?

Just wondering...

VOTE on my Name List

Sorry. I'm bored. Vote? Names are more likely to be used on story characters than babies, if that makes a difference:)

i am kind of writing a story. i wanted the community's input on this!

two of my characters names:
Adelaide Leclair
Laurence Elliot

they have a child named:
Evangeline Elliot

i have no middle names yet.

a few questions:
+ i don't think Evangeline Elliot really meshes. do you find it really grating, or am i really overthinking it?

+ do you more commonly or simply prefer seeing the spelling Elliot, Eliot, or Elliott?

+ i did not find out until a couple of weeks ago that Laurence is a feminine spelling, and that Lawrence is masculine. do you find it to be a big deal? if you saw the name Laurence, would you automatically assume male or female?

+ what are some nicknames would you give to people with these names? anything from a really direct nickname (like Addie for Adelaide) to something a bit more contrived would be awesome. i just need nickname ideas from someone besides myself, lol! this is the question i'd really like answered the most, so you can just answer this one and ignore the others if you don't feel like writing a big response ;D

thank you so much to anyone who comments. i know these are a lot of questions, but any time taken to just help me a little bit would be appreciated so much! :D

Ideas?

We just found out we're having a boy. Another one. This will be our third. My husband and I had a HORRIBLE time picking out the name of last. It's so hard for us to find something we like, let alone agree on. Our last name is short so we're looking for a first name that's a little bit longer. With our two sons, we have a Christian and Alexander. We don't shorten their names because then it would be too common--Chris and Alex.

This time we want something that is not an everyday common name, yet something that can easily be prounounced. I like the name Anderson, while my husband said there's a news guy on cable with that first name, and our exact last name as well. My husband likes the name Harrison. I'm not so sure about that one. Anyways, Where do you get your inspiration? The online lists of baby names are not any help--always listing the most popular/common. Are there any unusual websites out there? Or does anyone have an ideas or have heard of any interesting boy names?

TIA!

following the trend like a lemming.
Catherine is my mothers name, and a family name, so I intend on using it on one of my daughters as a middle name.
obviously i would not use a name as a middle on would kid and first on another, or middle or first on two kids, etc.
also, i would not use sirius and remus in the same family, but i would used remus and ginevra or sirius and ginevra, as she is so often called ginny.

My fiance James and I are getting married on November 24th. We want to start a family soon after, so I have been brainstorming names for a few months. There are a few on my list I am not too sure of, but they are just ideas. James is fairly indecisive, and it is hard to get an opinion out of him about anything. When the time comes, I want to at least have a starting point for the discussion of names. So without further ado, here is the list:

Please vote so I can least get honest perceptions of some of my choices.

Thanks for your help!

VOTE on my Name List

I've been here going over everyone else's name lists so I decided I had better offer mine up. Really, I don't plan on having children soon but I love names and I love making up names. These lists are some of my favorites for boys and girls. I'm more partial to the male names I my greatest fear is to have girls because I'll never know what to name them.

A cuople of notes:
Scott and Vincent are family names. No matter what name I use first, Scott will actually be the middle name. It's a tradition on my dad's side of the family that the first son carry his father's name as his middle name. Since my dad didn't have any sons, I'm going to have it pick up one generation later.

Ilene is also the name of my grandmother and Annie Grace was my great grandmother's name. My uncle and his wife were considering Anniston Grace for my cousin and while I was sad they didn't choose it I was glad that I would be able to use it later on.

Malachy is not a different way of spelling Malachi but an Irish name borne by one of my best friends here at school.
