i am kind of writing a story. i wanted the community's input on this!

two of my characters names:
Adelaide Leclair
Laurence Elliot

they have a child named:
Evangeline Elliot

i have no middle names yet.

a few questions:
+ i don't think Evangeline Elliot really meshes. do you find it really grating, or am i really overthinking it?

+ do you more commonly or simply prefer seeing the spelling Elliot, Eliot, or Elliott?

+ i did not find out until a couple of weeks ago that Laurence is a feminine spelling, and that Lawrence is masculine. do you find it to be a big deal? if you saw the name Laurence, would you automatically assume male or female?

+ what are some nicknames would you give to people with these names? anything from a really direct nickname (like Addie for Adelaide) to something a bit more contrived would be awesome. i just need nickname ideas from someone besides myself, lol! this is the question i'd really like answered the most, so you can just answer this one and ignore the others if you don't feel like writing a big response ;D

1. Evangeline Elliot does not work for me at all. Mostly because I dislike first and last names that start with the same letter.
2. Elliot.
3. It had never even occured to me that there was a female variant of Laurence. However, Lawrence does seem more masculine.
4. I'm terrible with nicknames. However, I would use Addie and Evie.

ugh, i know! like i know most people don't have that perfect, flowing name or anything lmao but it... realllyyyy... bothers me. XD so i wanted to see if i was just being neurotic or if it was a legitimate issue!

yeah, that was a weird thing to discover. i knew Laurence could be used as a male or female name, but didn't think the spelling impacted the usage much. if you saw Laurence, would you go 'OH IT'S A GIRL' automatically?

I like Eva Elliot. Less of a mouthful and very pretty.

I like Elliot best out of the three.

Laurence is still a man's name to me, and I like this spelling better.

Undirect nickenames:

Laurence Elliot - L.E. = Lee. Even better if his middle name starts with E as well. Suggestions - Erik, Elijah, Espen.

Adelaide - nickname "Lady" from the sound of at the end of her name. Also I like Le Clair better. Just a thought.

As for little Eva/ngeline, you might think of a nickname based on one of her qualities. Like Ginger is she has read hair or Petite is she is small, you get the picture.

i know, that's the problem with Evangeline -- it's a very long name. unfortunately for me, the first name of my character is supposed to be ironic in my story and blah blah, so i'd have to change her last name to make her name not suck anymore. but it's hard to think of last names because it has to be short so that it doesn't sound totally ridiculous, lmao.

thank you for the middle name suggestions! i was already thinking of Loren as a 'direct' nickname, but i really am liking the Lee idea! i would've never thought of it, thanks again! :D

evangeline doesn't really flow with elliot, but if you call her eva, it could work. or you could use the name Evelyn, and call her evvie or edie?

i prefer the spelling of lawrence. it seems...stronger to me, as laurence seems weak.

you could use the nn Ally for Adelaide. i have no idea where i got that from, but it seems it could work.

+ I like Evangeline Elliott, double 'l', double 't', and I think those names really suit the trio. I imagine Adeline to be a graceful, delicate woman, prone to anxiety but very wise, overall ethereal. Blonde, thin, pale, very feminine.
Laurence looks like a dark and lean lord, very misterious, not complementary to Adeline, but rather similar to her. The daughter sounds like an almost supernatural creature, with love for nature and very bright, sweet and cheerful.

+ Laurence does look more feminine, but if these people are what I picture them to be, then it suits his 'dandy' side :)

+ nicknames: I think Adi would work great for Adelaide, spelled like that so it can be open to interpretation, while I'd go with Addie if you mean to set them in a specific anglosaxon/anglophone background.
Laurence might have been called Rence when he was younger, maybe it was his name in college when he met Adi (I apologize, I don't mean to write the story for you :P)
For Evangeline, it depends if you're pronouncing it like Evangelyn or like Evangelina, minus the -a sound. In the first case she could go by Linnie.

I think Evangeline Elliot sounds fine. No flow trouble for me. I like the Elliot spelling, I think, though in any story I wrote, I would definitely use Eliot, as T.S. is like my favorite guy ever. Haha.

As far as nicknames go, Laurence (which is a fine, masculine spelling in my eyes) could be Lou, Ren, Laurie, and I like the Lee idea. Maybe in some contexts he goes by a childhood one and now, as an adult, he has a different one? Dunno!

Adelaide is SUCH a pretty name! Obviously Addie/Addy/Adi are good. Depending on her middle name, you could get various nickname possibilities, like Allie, Abby, Annie, Amy (AL, AB, AN, AM), though I don't know if you'd want to do that for both of your characters, ha.

For Evangeline, Eva, Eve, Evie, Van, Lennie (which I don't actually think is gorgeous, but whatever), "E", Angie, Vangie, Gellie, Lina. There are a lot. Good luck picking!

1: I'm not sure what I think about Evangeline Elliot. I really like the name Evangeline, but I'm not sure I like the name matched with Elliot.

2: Eliot- althought that seems more like a first name spelling, Elliott for the last name i suppose.

3: I had no idea that Laurence was a feminine spelling, I guess it never clicked. I do really like that spelling though, male or female.

4: I suppose you could get around the Evangeline Elliot issue, if you felt the need, by using a nickname like, Eva, or Ange, and for Adelaide, I would use Ade, Addie.
