Here I go...
Jul. 28th, 2006 07:21 amWhen I first joined this comm I just posted my list and waited for the responses. Now that I have participated in some dialogue about names, so much has changed. The biggest thing is that I used to have 3 middle names that I loved and never would deviate from (Rose (my name), Grace (because of Jesus) and Joy (also because of Jesus)). Now, I have a number of middle names with more substance than those, even though I still think they have a lot of substance. Beware, it's kind of long although there are only 6 names for each sex.
( Here are my lists, and some reasons )
x-posted to my journal.

my current faves...
Jul. 28th, 2006 10:42 amNot TTC yet (although I think my coworkers think I am bc I've been bored at work and keep talking about names!) but there are my current loves...comments welcome...
Ava Martine Wakefield
Kira Lily Wakefield (or Kira Charlotte)
Mia Elizabeth Wakefield (possibly Miranda, nn Mia)
I'd love some other mn suggestions for Ava or Kira though. No names that end in "a" though, too sing-songy for me
my boyfriend loves Ava and Kira but hates my mn ideas!

So, again, not having kids quite yet, but my boyfriend and I decided we really like Dimitri. I really like nicknames, but the only thing I can think of is "Dimi" which is SUPER adorable, but i would only want used by family. The reason? Kids are cruel and I can just hear it now.
The vocabulary-enhanced children: "Dimi is DIM! Dimi is DIM! hahahaha!"
The not-so vocabulary-enhanced children: "Dimi is a dumby! Dimi is a dumby! hahahaha"
All in a sing-songy voice of course!
So, IS there a nickname for Dimitri? I know he could always go by his middle name, or a nickname of his middle name, but there is a possibility that he won't have one. My BF doesn't have a middle name and doesn't see the significance. "If we come up with a great nickname, awesome, if not, who cares?"
on a sidenote: feel free to suggest middle names.. last name would start with a T if that helps lol
ETA: haha, what's wrong with my spelling today? i didn't even notice i added a Y instead of an i.

Jul. 28th, 2006 11:37 amI just read that someone's boyfriend wants their child to be named Jaymz something. I forget the middle name. The woman likes it, but thankfully in my opinion, doesn't think she'd actually be able to use it.
Opinions on Jaymz? I don't like it cause it's just too weird for me, and it also looks to feminine to me for some reason.

Jul. 28th, 2006 03:52 pmIn response to my post about the name Mitanjeli, it was written that, "If a person who is not Indian uses the name, it's cultural misappropriation, and therefore offensive. If a girl who comes from an Indian-American family wants to "Americanize" her name as a teenager, that's something all together different, and Anji or Mitzi are perfectly fine, IMO. They're both cute."
I'm going to state my opinion on the matter, and I would like to hear what the members of this community think. This is not an attempt to flame, I'm earnestly curious about other's philosophies on the matter.
I, however, completely disagree with the comment. I am free to choose the name of my children based on whatever criterion I deem appropriate. Granted, names like Allah, Buddha, Krishna, even Muhammad, Jesus and many others on that scale would absolutely be offensive if used by someone outside-- possibly even inside-- that culture. However, just because a name has root in a specific culture does not mean it is off limits to me because I'm not of that descent.
It might look odd for a white, American parent to have a son named Pedro or Julio. But does that make it "cultural missappropriation?" I certainly think not. I have absolutely no Italian blood in me whatsoever and neither does my husband, but if I want to use the name Giovanni or Alessandra that is my prerogative and anyone who finds that offensive is just looking for something to be offended about. Granted, Indian names may not be highly popularized in our Western culture, but that does not make them "off limits" to a westerner simply because they are not Indian. If this is the case, then I should never hear an Indian child named Samantha or Jessica. After all, cultural missappropration doesnt care which culture you're "misappropriating."
Anyone else, thoughts?

Slight Change
Jul. 28th, 2006 04:22 pmEdit: deleted this post's previous information.
New thing going on here. No more "y" deal.
Girl names
Bonnie, Lucy, Savannah. what do you guys think of those names.
Of course if I go with Bonnie I won't be naming my son Clyde.

Jul. 28th, 2006 10:06 pmThanks to all the responses about how long your lists are!
Here are my narrowed down combos to the ones I like the most. Aurelia and Corbin were added to my list after these were thought up so I'm not sure what I'll do what them. I just think Aurelia is so pretty. And it was my favorite of the storylines from Love Actually.
I'm a ways off from having children so these aren't set in stone. I'm not really looking for opinions, but you can give them if you wish. Mainly I just wanted to share and ask you guys to point out anything horribly wrong with the combos I might have missed- like bad things for the last name to be/start with, bad NNs, etc. Thanks!
(in alphabetical order by first name, not by preference)
Felicity Drew
Juliet Kennedy
Madeleine Josephine
Makayla Josephine
Reagan Olivia
Scarlett Anastasia
Dimitri Jai (Dmitri possibly but the Dm combo still bothers me a bit)
Jacoby Keagan
Preston Tobias
