do you, or anyone you know, go by a nickname that is completely different than your/their real name?

for example: my cousin is named Carl Timothy lastname, but he has always been called Zeke. in fact, i didn't know his name wasn't Zeke until like five or so years ago haha.

My grandpa goes by Ace, and I still have not clue what his name is except it starts with a J (I've seen this initial on his mail).

And one of my coworkers' name was Peggy (short for Margaret), which I didn't know because for the longest time all the Peggys I knew did not use this name as a nn but rather as their given name.

Margaret is actually a recognized nn for Peggy, though, so it's not totally random. It comes from Cockney naming traditions, where Margaret would have been "Meggy-Peggy" and Martha would have been "Matsy-Patsy."

Yeah, in this case it had more to do with the fact that the other Peggys I knew were not actually Margarets. :)

I know a Blaine David nn Zander. His sister was a toddler at the time and decided his name should be Tarzan, so the family humoured her and it stuck/evolved.

Also have a friend Janine who goes by Jenny.

I know a guy named Trey, and I just found out that his name is actually Wayne, but turns out he's a third. Not quite the same thing but I would've never known had his girlfriend not mentioned it randomly.

I am a big fan of nicknames that have nothing to do with actual names. I think they're cool.

I know a boy named Charles who goes by Whit. My great-uncles were James Augustus Cory, Jr called "Tommy" and George Bradford Cory called "Billy." They had a sister, Mary Elvyn, called "Sister." I used to call her "Aunt Sister" when I was little.
