Help me narrow it down

I have come to the conclusion that my list is too long and I think I should narrow it down. The problem is that I am having a hard time doing that.

So I would like your help

I know this list is long but if you could let me know what you think of these names and which you would eliminate I would really appreciate it.

Also I just want to say thanks for all the name advice since I feel like I post here a lot lol....and also I do not plan on having kids for many years....so try...if you can...to take the trendy factor out of some of these names.

Thanks!

Scratch:
- Austin (overused & Texas), Carter (Backstreet Boy), Eamon (One-hit wonder called 'fuck it'), Maddox (Angelina Jolie's baby from Cambodia), Max (My boyfriends sister's kittens name), Alena (meh), Arlana (sounds a bit hickish), Clarie (was this a typo for Claire? In which case, keep it, if not, ditch it - Clarie is cute but sounds like a nickname you'd give to a kid named Claire), Giselle (I think of a wicked stepsister), Kasha (for some reason I think of peanuts like, cashews), Keeva (Like the female form of Kevin), Nieva (too different), Niamh (How do you pronounce this?), Paris (Hilton, Michael Jackson's baby). Not meant to offend. I apologize if I came off a bit brash, I didn't mean to. :)

Wow, we do however have similar tastes. My list has Alexa, Nadia, Natalie, Rhiannon and Scarlett. :)

Lucas is my son's name, so obviously that is my favorite. I also like Nathan [my nephew's name], Ethan, Logan, and Zachary. Not too crazy about the rest.

For girls, my favorites are Fiona, Leila, Natasha, and Scarlett. The rest aren't really my style.

lol Eamon is far more obviously Irish than Colin.

I'm one of the Amelia lovers. I just think it's adorable, if it wasn't for being such a babyname freak i'd probbly have used it and regretted it when my daughter started school and I realised I had fallen into the trend of the year.

[identity profile] stardottedeyes.livejournal.com 2007-08-15 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
I would probably like Amelia more if it didn't remind me so much of Amelia Bedelia (http://books.google.com/books?id=bRG_hw7-3kAC&dq=amelia+bedelia&pg=PP1&ots=12HtHa9-B7&sig=SDMX2t9U_CvmvOZ4JFpNZOLRzZo&prev=http://www.google.com/search%3Fq%3Damelia%2Bbedelia%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:en-us:IE-Address%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26sourceid%3Die7%26rlz%3D1I7HPIA&sa=X&oi=print&ct=title#PPP1,M1)!

I'd dump the pop culture/celeb names, unless these are people you know personally and have an actual relationship with. Otherwise it just sort of looks like you spend too much time watching TV ;)

i like caleb, evan, liam, oliver, sean, abigail, amelia, cassandra, claire, emily, olivia, and zoe.

i like ben and jake, but i like them better as benjamin and jacob with the nicknames. that's my personal opinion though.

Kasha is no good especially!
This is Russian for "porridge" and sounds weird.

[identity profile] bornto-fly.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Adam - Keep it.
Austin - I'd drop this one. It's way overused and trendy and I really have a hard time picturing a lawyer or a doctor named "Austin"
Ben - Love the name, but drop it unless you use it as a nickname for Benjamin. The new trend of using ONLY the nicknames is SO annoying.
Braden - Drop it. It's WAY overused and trendy. It's one of the better -aden names, but it's still way overused.
Brody - It's ok, but it's like Austin; trendy sounding and hard to picture on an adult.
Caleb - Keep it!
Carter - Like it, but it's not one of my favorites on the list.
Christian (nn Chris...maybe) - Again, I like it, but it's not one of my favorites
Colin - See the above two
David - Love this name
Eamon - It's okay, but I can see this one causing a lot of problems with pronuncation/spelling because it's so uncommon. If you really like it, keep it, though.
Ethan - LOVE LOVE LOVE this name
Evan - It's okay, but if it were me, I'd drop this one
Gavin - It's okay, but like Austin, kind of overused and trendy at this point
Jake - See the comment for Ben. As a nickname for Jacob, I love it, but I don't like the nicknames by themselves.
Jesse - Love it
Landen - I'd spell it Landon, but I'd probably drop it. It's just kind of a blah name
Liam - LOVE this name
Logan - I'd drop it. It's getting very trendy
Lucas (nn Luke) - Love it
Maddox - Angelina Jolie has turned this into the latest trend. It's a decent name, and her son is adorable, but it's getting really popular and everyone's going to be like, "oh, after Angelina Jolie's son?"
Mason - Drop; it's very trendy, and I have a hard time seeing this on an adult
Matthew (nn Matt) - Love it
Max - I like it a lot, but it always seems unfinished as just Max; I hate Maxwell, though, so I don't know, haha
Nathan (nn Nate..maybe) - LOVE love love this name. Definitely keep it.
Noah - One of my favorites; keep it!
Oliver - It's okay, but if it were me, I'd drop it
Owen - see above
Rory - I like it, but Gilmore Girls has turned this into a girl's name
Ryan - I really really like this name
Sean - I prefer Seamus to Sean, but it's still a great name. Keep it!
Tighe - Although I know this is totally a legit name, it's one that (a) hardly anybody is going to be able to pronounce and (b) hardly anyone will have ever heard of. While that's fine and if you love it you should use it, I'd definitely consider dropping this one altogether or only using it as a middle name.
Tristan - very trendy lately.
Zachary (nn Zach) - I like the name, but it seems kind of 1980s to me.

[identity profile] bornto-fly.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
(sorry, LJ cut me off because my comment was too long lol)

Abigail (nn Abbie) - I LOVE it
Adriana - see Alena
Alana - see Alena
Alena - I know these three names are technically different names, but they all sound SO much alike. I'd recommend cutting it down to just one. I like Alana the best.
Alexa - It's okay, but I'd use it as a nickname for Alexandra
Amelia - One of my absolute favorites
Anneliese - I like the name, but you have WAY too many letters here. I'd cut it down to Analise.
Arlana - This one sounds totally made up to me, sorry. It's okay, but it sounds like Arlene with an a on the end.
Asia - I'd drop it; it's one of the better place names, but it's still a place name and I don't think it fits a little girl OR an adult woman
Audrey - LOVE it. Keep it.
Brooke - It's okay, but if it were me, I'd drop it.
Brynn - I'd drop it; it's okay, but there are a lot better names on your list, I think.
Camryn - I prefer it on boys, and I really dislike the spelling. I'd drop it, or else change the spelling to Cameron.
Carissa - It's an okay name, but I can't help thinking "DROP IT DROP IT!" because I know three Carissas and they are three of the most obnoxious and annoying and stupid people I've ever met in my life. However, you don't know them, obviously, so the connotation probably isn't the same for you.
Cassandra (nn Cassie) - Love the name. I like the nickname Cass, but Cassie works, too.
Cheyenne - I'd drop it. It's not very popular, but it IS very trendy and unfortunately, I always think "trailer trash" when I hear it. That and Sierra.
Claire - LOVE this name. Keep it, definitely.
Eliana (nn Elie) I don't like the name, but I like the nickname Ellie with two l's (Elie is a boy's name pronounced E-lee, like Elie Wiesel). Maybe use it as a nickname for Elisabeth or Eleanor?
Emily - Love it, but it is SO popular now. I'd still consider using it, but if that's something that bothers you, I'd drop it.
Faith - it's okay, but if it were me, I'd drop it
Fiona - it's okay, but not one of my favorites on the list
Giselle - all I can think of when I hear this name is an anorexic model-type. I'd definitely drop this one.
Gwyneth (nn Gwen) - okay, but not one of my favorites on your list
Isobel (nn Izzie) - I prefer the spelling of Isabel, but it's okay. It's very popular lately and with Grey's Anatomy, it's just going to get worse.
Jordana - I prefer just Jordan. Jordana seems like too much.
Kasha - I'd drop it
Keeva - again, I'd drop it
Kira - I like it a lot
Leah - LOVE it. Definitely keep this one.
Leila - Love it, keep this one
Malaya - I'd drop it
Maleah - I have absolutely no idea how to pronounce this one, but just by looking at it, I'd assume that most people would have the same problem. I'd drop it unless you're really attached to it.
Mia - Love it, but as a nickname more than on it's own. What about as a nickname for Amelia?
Molly - Love it
Nadia - Love it
Natalie - Keep it, definitely
Natasha - It's growing on me (and I like the name Tash), but I still have this picture in my head of some Russian prostitute, lol.
Neela - It's okay, but I think you've got a lot better names on your list
Nieva - Too similar to Nevaeh for my tastes. I'd definitely drop it.
Niamh - I have no idea how to pronounce this one, but I have a feeling that if I did, I'd have the same opinion of it as Tighe.
Noelle - It's okay, but I'd only use it as a middle name
Olivia - I LOVE it, but like Emily, I'd drop it if the popularity bothers you
Paige - It's okay, but not one of my favorites on the list
Paris - DROP DROP DROP DROP DROP. Paris Hilton has made this into the skankiest name ever. I CANNOT hear this name without having a negative reaction to it, and I think a good portion of the world feels the same way.
Peyton - I really dislike it; it seems so...90210 to me lol. Was there a character named Peyton? I don't even know. But it just seems very dated.
Rhiannon - it's okay, but I'd probably drop it
Scarlett - I prefer it with one t, but it's an okay name
Zoe - Love it.

[identity profile] anapology.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Anneleise is the legit spelling.
& Amelia is far too gorgeous to nickname, even if it is a cute one like Mia!

[identity profile] neroli.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
> Anneleise is the legit spelling.

In what language? EI in German is pronounced EYE, so the spelling you have here would result in something like Ana Liza.

[identity profile] anapology.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooops, typo.
Anneliese is the legit german/dutch spelling.

[identity profile] bornto-fly.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Anneliese and Analise are both legit spellings of the name. It's like the different between Jacob and Jakob, or Nathanael and Nathaniel; it's just a preference thing.

[identity profile] anapology.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, it's just 'WAY too many letters' suggests they are pointlessly added, lie random Y's floating around nowadays.

[identity profile] sandtree.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I would definitely get rid of these:

Austin - City in Texas
Ben - I really don't think nicknames should be given as full names
Braden - This will look very dated in ten years
Brody - See Braden
Carter - Same deal with Braden and Brody, plus it's an occupation/surname
Jake - Nickname
Landen - Surname or some place in Belgium?
Liam - Nickname
Maddox - Angelina Jolie
Mason - Occupation
Max - Nickname
Tighe - What is this supposed to be? Teague? Tadhg?

Girls:
Arlana - Not a real name
Asia - Continent
Brynn - It's just ugly
Camryn - Cameron, and as a boy's name
Cheyenne - Sounds kind of tacky
Kasha - Cassia
Keeva - Sounds ugly, especially spelt like this
Malaya - Is this a name?
Maleah - Same deal...
Nieva - Again with the confusing alternatively-spelled Irish names
Paris - Hilton, yes, even in ten years
Peyton - Nobody should be named this
Scarlett - It's a silly name

Well, just my opinions.

[identity profile] the-good-ship.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
What's Liam a nickname for?

[identity profile] neroli.livejournal.com 2007-08-15 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Is that a serious question? Liam is short for William.

[identity profile] the-good-ship.livejournal.com 2007-08-15 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Wow! I never knew that - I've never even noticed the end of William was Liam before.

[identity profile] neroli.livejournal.com 2007-08-15 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
True, it would be easier to notice the connection if people pronounced it wil-lee-um rather than will-yum! :)

[identity profile] eleanorgrace.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I'd say take out the names that don't fit in very well with your others (like Kasha, Peyton, Paris, Maleah, Malaya, Camryn, Asia, Arlana).

I'd also suggest tossing the nicknames you like more than their full-name counterparts, as you have so many traditional names you like apparently just as much (so away with Ben, Jake, Max, Molly).

Then I guess I'd factor in pronunciation as a third criteria if you're getting serious about trimming it down: Niamh, Tighe, Eamon.

And finally, when you're serious about using them in a few years, think about their common associations. Right now, I think Paris is a bad choice, but in ten years it might be fine (and of course you never know who will become famous and do stupid things to "ruin" any given name later, but something to consider). Also think about if your names give similar associations to one another: do you get the same vibe from Colin and Brody as you get from Noelle? Can you imagine them being siblings?

[identity profile] the-good-ship.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, here are my opinions (for what they're worth) on the names in your list. Feel free to ignore any you disagree with:
Boys:
Adam - good
Austin - immediately think of Austin Powers and then Texas. Of course you might like both of these things.
Ben - good
Braden - whenever, I see this name I think of the word "braiding," which isn't the worst word that could come to mind when thinking of a name, but still...
Brody - surname
Caleb - ok
Carter - surname
Christian (nn Chris...maybe) - not so keen on the full name, but love the nickname. Probably not a good name if you happen to be a raving atheist.
Colin - think this name is better suited to middled-aged men and/or dogs.
David - ok
Eamon - I think this could be all right.
Ethan - My gut reaction is "no," but I can't think of a good enough reason why.
Evan - I know it's a boy's name, but I know a girl called this, and I just can't get past that. Plus, it sounds like the opposite of odd.
Gavin - I have an unexplainable hatred for this name. I think it's something to do with how it sounds.
Jake - good
Jesse - sounds girly, just because it's so close to the feminine form, Jessica, which is so much more common.
Landen - bad, probably a surname too.
Liam - ok
Logan - seems sort futuristic to me for some reason; would expect to (and have) see it on a character in a sci-fi programme.
Lucas (nn Luke) - like Luke, but Lucas has always sounded a bit creepy to me, plus it reminds me of Lucazade.
Maddox - the "mad" really stands out, so my brain goes to "crazy person".
Mason - n. worker in stone; if anything a surname.
Matthew (nn Matt) - good
Max - good
Nathan (nn Nate..maybe) - good
Noah - good
Oliver - good
Owen - good
Rory - ROAR!
Ryan - good
Sean - ok
Tighe - looked this up to see if it was a real name, and the closest I could find was Tighearnach, meaning lordly. I can't really make a judgement, because I haven't a clue how it's pronounced. Could be something to take into consideration.
Tristan - trist => tryst in my head. I am weird.
Zachary (nn Zach) - good

Girls:
Abigail (nn Abbie) - good
Adriana - ok
Alana - prefer Alanis
Alena - nope
Alexa - nope
Amelia - good
Anneliese - ok
Arlana - "arl" just doesn't some good to me at the front of a name.
Asia - not a fan of place names as names personally.
Audrey - seems old ladyish in a bad way to me. I say "in a bad way," because I personally like a lot of names that are considered old ladyish.
Brooke - has nice imagery it has to be said, but not my taste.
Brynn - brine!
Camryn - looks very Kree8ive to me.
Carissa - ok
Cassandra (nn Cassie) - ok
Cheyenne - nope, unless you have a connection in your family background. Even them I don't think it's a nice-sounding name.
Claire - ok
Eliana (nn Elie) - nope, looks like (maybe it is?) a combination of two names - Ellie and Ana - and that's rarely good.
Emily - good
Faith - again not a good idea for rabid atheists, but I don't know anything about you, so have no idea if this applies or not.
Fiona - good
Giselle - I really like this name too, but the thing that would hold me is the "giz" sound at the beginning. WHY does this have to be slang for manly excretions?!
Gwyneth (nn Gwen) - good (very, in fact)
Isobel (nn Izzie) - good
Jordana - nope
Kasha - think it looks better with a "c".
Keeva - ok
Kira - better spelt Keira.
Leah - ok
Leila - ok
Malaya - nope
Maleah - nope
Mia - good
Molly - only works well for babies and children up to about twelve.
Nadia - good
Natalie - good
Natasha - good
Neela - nope
Nieva - nope
Niamh - good
Noelle - good
Olivia - good
Paige - ok, I suppose.
Paris - bad I'm afraid, and you can probably guess why I'd say that.
Peyton - ton = town/estate in Anglo Saxon, so sounds like it should be a place name. Also, I really think this sounds too harsh to be a name, let alone a girl's name.
Rhiannon - nope
Scarlett - nope
Zoe - good

I feel mean now, I really hope I haven't been too harsh, have I?

I left the ones I'm not terribly fond of. This doesn't mean there is something wrong with these names, they just aren't something I would personally have on my list.

Boys:
Austin
Braden (Caden, Jaden, Aidan, Hayden)
Brody
Eamon
Ethan
Gavin
Liam
Maddox
Mason
Matthew (nn Matt)
Max
Zachary (nn Zach)

Girls:
Abigail (nn Abbie)
Alana
Alena
Arlana
Asia
Audrey
Camryn (I like Cameron, on a boy)
Cassandra (nn Cassie)
Cheyenne (In the same group as Sierra and Savannah, sounds trashy)
Emily (Every third girls name is Emily)
Faith
Gwyneth (nn Gwen)
Kasha
Keeva
Kira
Nadia
Neela
Paris (Hilton)
Peyton (Sounds like a masculine name)

I don't think there is anything wrong with having a lot of names on your "list". Over the years your tastes will change and names will naturally get added and taken off. Keep in mind that the father of your future child may have strong opinions about the name too. I think having a lot of names to choose from is good, because he may only like two out of the many on your list.

That being said - these are the names I like:

Adam
Brody
Carter
Colin
Ethan
Evan
Gavin
Landen
Liam
Logan
Matthew (nn Matt)
Noah
Oliver
Owen
Sean
Tighe

Girls:

Alana
Amelia
Audrey
Brynn
Claire
Eliana (nn Elie)
Faith
Fiona
Giselle
Gwyneth (nn Gwen)
Kira
Leila
Nadia
Olivia

I love Carter, Colin, Landon, Oliver, Sean and Tighe. Also Claire, Brynn, Gwen, Kira and Nadia.

Good Luck!
