What do you think of Momoko?

I stayed with a family in Japan for a summer a couple of years ago, and one of my "sisters" was/is named Momoko. In Japanese, I think the name is absolutely gorgeous. It means Peach-child/Peach-girl. In English though, I think it sounds kind of like a clown's name because of the repetition of the first syllable (like Bobo or Koko). I really love the connotations of Peach though- warm, sweet, summer etc.

Her sister was called Hanako (Flower-child/girl), and I think thats cute too. We always called them Momo and Hana.

What do you think? Even though I love the name, I don't think I could call an American child Momoko. Maybe a bird or a cat or something.

Momoko is pretty, especially the meaning, but I do agree that it is clown-ish sounding.

I love Hanako! I don't know if I would use it as a first or middle name, though.

I absolutely love both of the names. I think Momo is a way cute nn.

I've found that - as a whole - ethnic names usually don't translate well to children not of that ethnicity. I mean, there are some Japanese names that will translate well. Ami, Hana, Kaede, Mari, Rei, Ran, Sora... I could see them all working mostly because they already have close English counterparts.

Momoko would definately be something I'd name my cat or something. 'Momo' is something I could see myself calling out in the house and waiting for a fat tabby to come padding up.

I like Japanese names though, lol.

I live in Japan (hubby is military) and I absolutely LOVE Japanese names. We toyed with idea of naming our next baby "Kaida" which means little dragon, but we ended up picking another name (i'm due in 3 weeks!)

If you are Japanese, it's beautiful.

If you're not, it's affected.
