If I remember correctly someone posted not too long ago about meeting a pair of twins named Melinda and Melissa. I now have proof that those names are a little too similar.

My name is Melinda and I just happened to glance at an appointment card where they listed my name as Melissa. Poor little girls.

On a sidenote, does anyone else with a fairly unique name have this problem? It doesn't happen too much, but I've also had instances of being called Melanie (by a teacher no less).

Sarlotta? That's interesting! Where did your parents get it from?

They wanted me to get a name that would be easy to transfer into a everywhere name(to a name that everyone can say without trouble), and my mom picked it up from Swedish calendar :) I'm quite proud of it ^^

*raises hand* omg - me!

lol, ok, my (nick)name is Alix.... that's ALL i've ever gone by. and i can't tell you how long it takes ppl to spell it correctly (with me correcting them EVERY time they misspell) or how many times when i do correct them, i get something along these lines:

"oh, it's spelled with an 'i'? Not an 'e'? Are you sure?"

no... you're absolutely right! omg! here i am, 21 years old and if it wasn't for you, i'd continue misspelling my own name! THANK YOU!

lol. it's insane. so i sympathize with ppl who have an alternate spelling/derivative of a more 'popular' name (or, in your case, a similar looking name) and have ppl mess up paperwork b/c of it.

I'm a Jessica and I've been often mistaken for Jennifer (which I really dislike, no offence)

My name is Stephanie and I got Tiffany quite a few times in elementary school. That's pretty understandable, but in the last year or so, I've been called Bethany times out of mind. I can see the similarity, but I wonder why it's only in the last few months that I've been called that so often.

My ex's father used to call me Sophie. The first two or three times, it was an accident, then he kept it up as a running joke. I didn't mind, I like the name Sophie much better than my real name.

Where did they get Tiffany or Bethany?

From: [identity profile] pap3r-heart.livejournal.com
Yeah, my name is Stephanie too and I ordered a sandwich over the phone while I was at work one day and when they delivered it the slip said Bethany instead of Stephanie, which I guess could easily be misheard over the phone.

But there are other times, where for some reason or another, someone doesn't see the -ie at the end of my name and will simply say Stephan. I hate having a name that's close to Stephen/Stephan. Actually I just hate my name period, but that just makes it worse. UGH.

From: [identity profile] waitingonsunday.livejournal.com
Yes! I HATED in school when teachers would call roll and just glance at the list and call for "Stephen." I've always felt kind of dowdy and boyish, and it was like salt in the wound to be called by a boy's name, even if it was unrelated to how I look.

I know! And what's even wierder is that it's my mom's name. Everyone who's ever called me that does not know my mom. I also get Lainey sometimes. Maybe I just don't know how say my own name.

I'm Kelsey, which I suppose is somewhat of an odd name (especially when you have a lisp like I did when I was younger). I get mispronunciations all the time: Kelley, Chelsea, Kelso (actually a nickname by some wannabe Alpha Girls for me), Karrey, Lilly, Emily, and Karen.

My twin sister is Lacey, and she mostly gets Lisa. Once she even got Larry, but that's her own fault for bad handwriting.

Actually, there was a Melinda and a Melissa in my French class in high school-totally different looking. Melissa was one of those pseudo-punk girls, Melinda was going to become a model when she got out out of high school, and looked the part: blonde, tall, nice features. And every single day, the teacher (who had had both these students for a year beforehand) called Melinda 'Melissa'. It would have been funny if she hadn't gotten so angry.

My name is Darcy, but I've been called 'Rachel' before, by a friend's mother. It made no sense whatsoever, so we laughed about it. She still calls me 'Not Rachel' sometimes.

I'm Carol. On appointment cards, in class, in fact, pretty much everywhere, it's assumed my name is Caroline or Carolyn. I can't JUST be Carol, obviously, but I am.

*Raises Hand* I am the queen of having my name misspelled or mispronounced. My name is Cecily pronounced Ses-il-ee. The following is a list of every possible name I've been called or mistaken for. Cecil, Cesil, Cesile, Sesilee, Secil, Sesil, Cecilia, Celest, Ceesilee, Sisily, Ashley, Stephanie, Bethany, Seslie, Cestitial,

I've never been a huge fan of my name mostly because NO ONE can see to pronounce or spell it right. When I was in my early twenties I seriously considered changing my name or going by my middle name. However my middle name is Star and I guess I just never felt that it fit me.

Not as drastic as some of yours but my name is Kate, and at school all the teachers insisted on calling me Katie.
I HATE the name Katie (no offence), so after a few times of telling them I'd just ignore them!
Also people ask me to fill in my full name when I put Kate, and won't accept that I am Kate and not Katheryn or Katelyn or any dirivative of!

My name is Martyna. It's the name Martina, with a 'y'. People I meet for the first time spell it with an 'i' but I'm quite used to automatically spelling it out for people if they need to write it down. I've had people spell it 'Mitina', 'Matina' 'Martena'

I've had a great range of names from teachers over the years based on the unconventional spelling of my name: Martin-ah, Marty (blergh!) Mih-tee-nah, Marty-nah, Martin, Ma-tie-nah. I'm not afraid to correct people either and I'll continue correcting them until they get it right! hehe :D

Yep, that was me!

My name's Danielle and it's pretty common here, so people don't give me other names. I've been called Marielle once, but that was about it.
