I work in child care in the nursery room and we got a new kid the other day named Noa (prn same as Noah). Noa was dressed in a blue shirt and jeans with black pumps. When I went to change Noa's nappy...surprise! Noa was a GIRL! I had been saying "good boy!" to her all morning! I felt so bad!

So what do you think about gender swapping names? Good? Bad? Don't care?

Noa is actually a legitimate girl's name, but I generally don't mind when girls have guys names or vice versa. I actually think it is pretty cute, but I would never do it myself.

I don't like unisex names. I really want my daughter to have a female specific frilly over the top pretty name.
Let's just hope she's not a tomboy..

Noa without the h is actually a girl's name. It's just not as commonly used as Noah is.

Noa, I had never considered. It's pretty, but I wouldn't use it. I prefer Nola.

I had to chuckle at the story. At the job I used to have, customers would bring their children in quite often. Once, a man brought in a very pretty child with long hair in braids and great big eyes with long lashes. "Look at those pretty eyes," I said. "What's her name?" "His name's Jerome," the father responded, very slightly emphasizing the his. I wanted to drop through the floor.

Fortunately, they did not become regulars.

I hate when people get all snotty about it.. =(
When people have messed up my babies' gennders in the past, I just go go with it. I'm never going to see that person again, what difference does it make if they think I have a Leah or a Leo? LMAO

My older son was VERY female looking until his long blonde curls were cut off. No matter HOW boyish I dressed him, we in variably got the "OH how PRETTY! what is her name?!" "His name is Seth Joseph"

Its not always that us parents who get that constantly mean to be rude, but when it happens 1028347089127308473 times a day to the kid dressed VERY VERY EXPRESSLY boyish, it gets agrivating.

Finally, we shaved his head into a military cut. But the second his hair gets slightly long again, like, say pixie-cut length (not very long at all!), its back to the "what a pretty little girl!".

*sigh* (using very old icon so you can see what he looked like at that time)

She isn't Hispanic, is she?

Where I teach we often see "Noe" which is NOAH in English, but in Spanish is pronounced "No-Way." (And some of the children with same name deserved it!"

Personally if I named my child with a boy-sounding name, I'd dress her in dresses CONSTANTLY.

Oh, but what I meant to say was

Giving girls boy's names is very common.

Francis was originally a boy's name, as was Marion. I thought that was terribly funny, since they are both names of my aunts.

We thought my couin was crazy for calling her daughters Jordan and Madison, but now those girl names are all the rage.

I read once that a girlwoman with a male-sounding name in the business world is more likely to have her memos/mail answered than a woman with an obviously female name.

Marion? Really? Because Robin Hood had Maid Marion and that was like.... 14th century or something. Wow, the things you learn on the internets.

Noa is a girl's name that appears in the bible.

I love it and have it on my own short list. I like it a lot more than Noah on a boy, which just reminds me of bearded men with big boats.

I don't mind unisex names or formerlly boys names on girls. For the most part I actually like the name better on girls than boys (Meredith, Ashley, Lindsey, etc.). But not Ryan. I think that name should be left to the boys (I like it, just not for girls).

One thing that does bother me is when people give girls a boys name when there is a feminization of the name already.

It's not swapping. Noah is a boy's name. Noa is a girl's name. It's Hebrew and means "motion" or "movement".

Doesn't bother me either way, but there are some very feminine names SPECIFICLY for boys, anyway. There is one I just tried to look for that really bothers me when it is a guys name and for some reason I just can't seem to remember what it is. I thought it started with a "c" but I can't find it. However, i did find some other girly boy names, my favorite so far being Clair (I think the girls name is usually with an 'e' at the end, right?). It is Latin and means "bright". How great is that? (My boyfriend of 6 years has the last name Bright. Too bad I could never pass that by him as a boys name. Haha.)

I like Noa for a girl. It's Hebrew, and quite pretty.

In a cartoon that we had on italian tv like 20 years ago (but which was, I guess, made in Japan, although not your typical jap anime or anything like that) there were two girls that were one the nemesis of the other and the sunny good one was called Bia (Bee-ah, and not a name anywhere I know) and the evil dark one was called Noa. That's actually the only context I'd heard Noa on a girl before.

p.s. Noa is also the name of a Cacharel perfume.

I wouldn't name a girl Noah/Noa. The name is just too masculine to me.But I am cool with unisex names. They're confusing, yeah. But it's fine with some names.But...if Noa was wearing pumps...

I mostly like unisex names, especially English ones =).
Noa's been a pretty popular girl's name here some years ago. & lol at the story ;)

As has been noted Noa is already established as a girls name.

I'm not a fan of the 'boys names for girls' trend. It seems quite problematic for me, because then the pool of male names is reduced as people stop using the 'unisex' names for boys. Why is it is a postive thing for girls to be 'boyish', but not for boys to have any hint of 'femininity'?

That said there are some unisex names I happen to like, but generally happen to prefer them for boys.

lol oh no.

i had the same thing happen to me. i'm also in the nursery room... and i had a new little boy, he's indian, who i thought was a girl. all the other girls that i work with thought the same thing... they made me change his nappy just to be sure. lol

anyway, i don't think it matters. as long as the child n parents are happy. :P
