Jun. 15th, 2007 10:07 pmI work in child care in the nursery room and we got a new kid the other day named Noa (prn same as Noah). Noa was dressed in a blue shirt and jeans with black pumps. When I went to change Noa's nappy...surprise! Noa was a GIRL! I had been saying "good boy!" to her all morning! I felt so bad!
So what do you think about gender swapping names? Good? Bad? Don't care?

Date: 2007-06-15 12:27 pm (UTC)Noa is actually a legitimate girl's name, but I generally don't mind when girls have guys names or vice versa. I actually think it is pretty cute, but I would never do it myself.

Date: 2007-06-15 02:01 pm (UTC)I had to chuckle at the story. At the job I used to have, customers would bring their children in quite often. Once, a man brought in a very pretty child with long hair in braids and great big eyes with long lashes. "Look at those pretty eyes," I said. "What's her name?" "His name's Jerome," the father responded, very slightly emphasizing the his. I wanted to drop through the floor.
Fortunately, they did not become regulars.

Date: 2007-06-15 08:57 pm (UTC)Its not always that us parents who get that constantly mean to be rude, but when it happens 1028347089127308473 times a day to the kid dressed VERY VERY EXPRESSLY boyish, it gets agrivating.
Finally, we shaved his head into a military cut. But the second his hair gets slightly long again, like, say pixie-cut length (not very long at all!), its back to the "what a pretty little girl!".
*sigh* (using very old icon so you can see what he looked like at that time)

Date: 2007-06-15 02:35 pm (UTC)Where I teach we often see "Noe" which is NOAH in English, but in Spanish is pronounced "No-Way." (And some of the children with same name deserved it!"
Personally if I named my child with a boy-sounding name, I'd dress her in dresses CONSTANTLY.
Oh, but what I meant to say was
Date: 2007-06-15 02:38 pm (UTC)Francis was originally a boy's name, as was Marion. I thought that was terribly funny, since they are both names of my aunts.
We thought my couin was crazy for calling her daughters Jordan and Madison, but now those girl names are all the rage.
I read once that a
girlwoman with a male-sounding name in the business world is more likely to have her memos/mail answered than a woman with an obviously female name.Re: Oh, but what I meant to say was

Date: 2007-06-15 02:39 pm (UTC)I love it and have it on my own short list. I like it a lot more than Noah on a boy, which just reminds me of bearded men with big boats.

Date: 2007-06-15 03:01 pm (UTC)One thing that does bother me is when people give girls a boys name when there is a feminization of the name already.

Date: 2007-06-16 05:39 pm (UTC)I'm not a fan of the 'boys names for girls' trend. It seems quite problematic for me, because then the pool of male names is reduced as people stop using the 'unisex' names for boys. Why is it is a postive thing for girls to be 'boyish', but not for boys to have any hint of 'femininity'?
That said there are some unisex names I happen to like, but generally happen to prefer them for boys.

Date: 2007-06-17 06:29 am (UTC)i had the same thing happen to me. i'm also in the nursery room... and i had a new little boy, he's indian, who i thought was a girl. all the other girls that i work with thought the same thing... they made me change his nappy just to be sure. lol
anyway, i don't think it matters. as long as the child n parents are happy. :P
